Mutual Interest Between Ray Allen, Heat

4:09pm: Noting that the Heat and Knicks top Allen's offseason wishlist, Chris Mannix of SI.com says the Heat's interest in the sharpshooter is contingent on his willingness to accept a reserve role (Twitter links).

10:28am: The Heat's victory parade is underway in Miami, and while the front office is undoubtedly enjoying the celebration, it won't be long before the team starts making roster moves in preparation for the 2012/13 season. One potential target for the Heat this summer could be veteran shooting guard Ray Allen. According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com, there is mutual interest between the future Hall-of-Famer and the 2012 champs.

As Windhorst writes, the Heat are set to be a taxpaying team again in 2012/13, meaning the most they could offer Allen or any other free agent is the $3MM mini mid-level exception. Whether or not the team wants to spend that full $3MM figures to depend on its willingness to increase its luxury-tax bill. With tax penalties still amounting to a dollar for every dollar spent above $70.3MM, signing a player for $3MM would essentially cost the Heat $6MM in total.

Even if the Heat decide to use their full mid-level, they could target a big man rather than a shooter like Allen. But with Mike Miller's health and long-term future still up in the air, the 16-year NBA veteran would represent a more-than-adequate replacement if Miller retires or is amnestied. Allen is expected to draw interest from a handful of other contenders, including the Knicks, Celtics, Hawks, and Clippers.
