The T'Wolves have offered Kevin Martin a four-year deal that is worth as much as $30MM with incentives, according to Sam Amick of USA Today (via Twitter). Martin is represented by Dan Fegan of Relativity Sports, according to the Hoops Rumors Agency Database.
Martin, of course, spent last season with the Thunder after coming over from Houston in the James Harden trade. The guard averaged 14.0 PPG while shooting 45% from the floor in 27.7 minutes per contest last season.
The Thunder would like to facilitate a sign-and-trade for Martin if they are unable to retain him, but that could be tricky given their lack of cap flexibility.
They have to follow a good move (re-signing Budinger) with a really bad move. Martin is not worth that contract. I get that in NBA free-agency the pickins are slim while the competition is plentiful so you have to over-pay, but that’s not a good reason to make poor decisions. I am guessing the Wolves feel ready to make some noise and believe their cap room is about to shrink with Pek so they want to acquire anything that could help while they can, but they will likely regret this one in a year or two.
Well they signed him for 4 years, $28M, which is only $7M per year, which is half of his salary from last year, and as long as he averages decent numbers, it won’t be a bad signing.
His salary last year was an over-pay, but it’s not the money exactly its the years. I doubt he will have value in year 4. He should score a bit so he has value but he is a liability on the other end of the court but I guess I am nit-picking a bit on a guy who is likely the 4th or 5th option.
Agreed. However, not much of a defensive presence, and unless Taylor wants to pay tax, this means that AK is almost certainly not coming back.
Still, it addresses a huge need, and he played his best ball under Adleman. If these two moves are with an eye toward pleasing him, I’m all for it, as the draft seemed like it was designed to do anything but.
However, if they lock up Pek, trade JJ or Ridnour for an expiring or two, maybe find some cash to go after Wright or Allen, I’ll consider it a decent offseason, by Wolves standards.
