David Lighty

Odds & Ends: Miller, Kennedy, Lighty, Pau

Quincy Miller is one of a handful of players whose contract will become guaranteed by virtue of earning a spot on his team’s opening day roster, as our schedule of guarantee dates shows. Now that he’s breathing a little easier, Miller can focus on contributing to the Nuggets, particularly with players ahead of him in the rotation sidelined with injuries, writes Christopher Dempsey of the Denver Post.

Here are a few more Sunday odds and ends:

Hawks Waive Thomas, Lighty, Wilkins

The Hawks have reduced their roster count by three players, cutting Adonis Thomas, David Lighty, and Damien Wilkins, according to Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The team had been carrying a full 20-man roster, so at least two more players will need to be released before opening night.

Wilkins, a nine-year veteran, is the only one of the three waived Hawks with NBA experience. Lighty, 25, went undrafted in 2011 and has played overseas since then, most recently averaging 12.5 PPG and shooting 42.5% on three-pointers in 35 games for JSF Nanterre in France. Thomas, 20, left Memphis this spring after his sophomore year. All three players will become free agents later this week, assuming they clear waivers.

With 17 players still under contract, the Hawks will have to pare down their roster to 15 (or fewer) within the next couple weeks. Eric Dawson, Royal Ivey, James Johnson, and Shelvin Mack are all on fully non-guaranteed deals, making them the likeliest candidates to be released.

David Lighty Accepts Hawks’ Camp Invite

Former Ohio State shooting guard David Lighty will be in camp next month with the Hawks, according to Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Word that Lighty would accept a training camp invite from the team was first reported earlier in the summer by Emiliano Carchia of Sportando.

Lighty, 25, went undrafted in 2011 as Chad Ford's 64th-best prospect in that year's rookie class. He has played overseas since then, most recently averaging 12.5 PPG and shooting 42.5% on three-pointers in 35 games for JSF Nanterre in France.

As Vivlamore notes, Lighty and Eric Dawson are the players confirmed to be camp invitees so far for the Hawks, while Shelvin Mack is on a non-guaranteed contract and Mike Scott only has a partial guarantee. Mack and Scott probably have a leg up on Lighty and Dawson for regular-season roster spots, but with only 12 guaranteed contracts on their books so far, the Hawks should have a few players competing for those last few openings next month.
