Manny Harris

International Notes: Lawson, Barbosa, Neal, Ajinca

Veteran NBA guard Ty Lawson, who spent last season in China before signing with the Wizards for their brief playoff run, is headed back overseas to his old team, according to Emiliano Carchia of Sportando. As Carchia relays, Lawson has re-signed with the Shandong Golden Stars of the Chinese Basketball Association, replacing another former NBA guard, Andrew Goudelock. Goudelock is out for the season with a knee injury.

In 46 contests in China last season, Lawson averaged 25.5 PPG, 6.5 APG, and 2.2 SPG, shooting 40.1% on three-point attempts. Although he parlayed that performance into a spot on a playoff roster upon returning to the NBA, the 31-year-old didn’t end up on a regular season roster for the 2018/19 NBA season. China’s season ends before the NBA league year does, so we’ll see if Lawson can once again find an NBA home once his overseas deal expires.

Here are a few more notes on former NBA players joining new teams or drawing interest internationally:

  • Brazilian guard Leandro Barbosa is continuing his playing career in his home country, with Minas Tenis Clube recently announcing the signing of Barbosa. The 36-year-old spent most of his lengthy NBA career with Phoenix.
  • Former Spurs guard Gary Neal, who also spent time with five other NBA clubs, has officially signed with Turkish club Banvit, the team announced in a press release (hat tip to Emiliano Carchia of Sportando). Neal last appeared in the NBA during the 2016/17 season, when he played two games for Atlanta.
  • Former NBA guard Manny Harris is also playing in Turkey, as Carchia notes. Harris, who appeared in 93 NBA games for the Cavaliers, Lakers, and Mavericks, has officially joined Turkish club Bahcesehir (Twitter link).
  • Veteran NBA big man Alexis Ajinca, who was cut in October after being traded to the Clippers, is a candidate to play for ASVEL in France in the new year. Carchia hears that Ajinca has been telling people he’ll join ASVEL and relays a report from Le Progress that also links Ajinca to the French team.

International Notes: J. Anthony, B. Paul, Gentile

Former NBA center Joel Anthony has decided to return to Argentina to continue his playing career, as Emiliano Carchia of Sportando relays. After helping to lead San Lorenzo de Almagro to a domestic title and an Americas League championship last season, Anthony has rejoined the club, replacing another former NBA big man, Eric Dawson.

Anthony, who was waived by the Bucks last October, appeared in 490 regular season games over the course of his 10-year NBA career for the Heat, Celtics, Pistons, and Spurs. The 36-year-old also played in another 66 postseason games, primarily for the Heat — he won a pair of titles with Miami.

Here are a few more international notes and updates on players with a connection to the NBA:

  • Brandon Paul, who was waived by the Spurs earlier this year after appearing in 64 games for the club last season, is said to be considering EuroLeague club KK Buducnost, according to Emiliano Carchia of Sportando, who adds that a move to China is another option for the ex-Spurs shooting guard.
  • After being signed and cut by the Rockets this fall, Italian swingman Alessandro Gentile has signed with Estudiantes in Spain, per Carchia. The 53rd overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft, Gentile was a Rockets draft-and-stash for several years, but his rights are no longer held by any NBA team.
  • Manny Harris, who has seen NBA action for the Cavaliers, Lakers, and Mavericks, had a short-lived stint in Lithuania this season. As Carchia passes along, Harris and his club in Lithuania, Rytas Vilnius, have agreed to part ways after just 18 days.

2017 NBA G League Expansion Draft Results

The NBA G League conducted its expansion draft today, allowing the league’s four new franchises to add the returning rights to 11 players apiece. The league’s previously-existing 22 teams had been permitted to retain the rights to nine players each, leaving the rest of their players unprotected and free to be drafted, though no team can lose more than two players. Adam Johnson recently outlined the full details of the expansion draft process in a piece for 2 Ways & 10 Days.

The G League’s four new teams this year are affiliates for the Hawks (Erie BayHawks), Grizzlies (Memphis Hustle), Bucks (Wisconsin Herd), and Clippers (Agua Caliente Clippers of Ontario). The Erie BayHawks have been in the G League for years but are technically an expansion team since the old iteration of the BayHawks was purchased by the Magic and moved to Lakeland, Florida — the Lakeland Magic will retain returning rights for former BayHawks players.

The players added today by the G League’s four expansion teams won’t necessarily play for them this season — in fact, it’s not all that common for expansion draftees to suit up for their new clubs. Many of those players will try to catch on with an NBA team or will end up playing overseas, if they’re not already on an NBA or international roster. Still, the expansion draft gives the G League’s new teams some assets as they start to build their rosters for the coming season.

Listed below are the results of today’s expansion draft, per the G League’s official announcement. The player’s former G League team is noted in parentheses, and picks are ordered by round. The teams will hold their players’ rights for the next two seasons:

Ex-Maverick Manny Harris Signs With Greek Team

Shooting guard Manny Harris, who played briefly for the Mavericks last season, has signed to play in Greece, according to Orazio Cauchi of Sportando. Harris joins the AEK Basketball Club, based in Athens.

The 27-year-old signed a pair of 10-day contracts with Dallas in March and appeared in four games. He averaged 2.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in 6.3 minutes and was not retained when the second deal expired.

Harris signed with the Cavaliers after going undrafted out of Michigan in 2010. He played 80 games over two seasons in Cleveland before being waived after the 2011/12 season. Harris also had a nine-game stint with the Lakers in 2014.

Pistons Notes: Downtown Move, Kennard, FA Workouts

The Detroit City Council voted on Tuesday in favor of several key agreements related to the Pistons’ move downtown, as Christine Ferretti and Jennifer Chambers of The Detroit News report. However, while Tuesday’s votes finalized approvals for the Pistons’ new practice facility and headquarters, there are more roadblocks that will need to be cleared before the club’s move to the Little Caesars arena is fully approved.

On June 20, the Detroit city council is scheduled to vote on the issuance of $34.5MM in proposed taxpayer-funded DDA bonds. Shortly after Tuesday’s city council session took place though, a federal judge granted a June 19 lawsuit that seeks to halt that June 20 vote, per Louis Aguilar of The Detroit News. As Aguilar explains, that lawsuit seeks to allow Detroit and Wayne County residents to vote on whether taxpayer money should be put toward the new arena and team facilities.

As the Pistons wait for resolution to the legal battle over their potential new arena, here are a few more items related to the team:

Mavs Re-Sign Jarrod Uthoff, Part With Manny Harris

10:55am: The Mavericks have officially announced their new deal with Uthoff. It’s a multiyear pact, according to the team, which probably means next season will be non-guaranteed, as I speculated below.

10:14am: Two players on their second 10-day contracts with the Mavericks saw those deals expire overnight, and one of the two will be sticking with the club. According to ESPN’s Marc Stein (via Twitter), the Mavs intend to sign Jarrod Uthoff to a rest-of-season contract. However, Manny Harris will return to Dallas’ D-League affiliate, the Texas Legends.

Uthoff, who will turn 24 this spring, saw very limited action in just two games with the Mavericks, and has yet to score his first NBA point. Still, the team apparently liked what it saw from Uthoff in practice and wants to keep him in Dallas. Although Stein doesn’t offer any specific contract details, I imagine Uthoff’s new contract will include a non-guaranteed salary for 2017/18, giving the Mavs to keep the 6’9″ forward at the minimum salary next season.

As for Harris, the 27-year-old saw a little more action than Uthoff during his 20 days in Dallas, averaging 2.0 PPG and 2.3 RPG in four contests (6.3 MPG). His return to the D-League will be a boost for the Legends — he had been averaging 26.0 PPG and 7.6 RPG for the Mavs’ affiliate.

With Uthoff returning and Harris on his way out, the Mavs will have one open spot on their 15-man roster, so they could take a flier on another 10-day prospect.

NBA D-League Assignments/Recalls: 3/26/17

NBA D-League Assignments/Recalls: 3/25/17

Here are Saturday’s D-League assignments and recalls from around the NBA:

  • The Cavs recalled Kay Felder from Canton, the announced via press release (link). Felder has lit it up for the Charge this season, averaging 29.9 points in 36 MPG. Felder’s most recent D-League assignment was an eventful one; the 5-foot-9 Felder threw down a dunk with his team comfortably ahead late in the game, drawing the ire of Jordan Mickey.
  • The Mavs reassigned Manny Harris and Jarrod Uthoff to the Texas Legends, the team announced in a press release. Uthoff made his NBA debut with Dallas this season, going scoreless in two appearances. Harris fared slightly better, scoring eight points over four games.

Mavs Sign Manny Harris To New 10-Day Deal

MARCH 19: Harris’ second 10-day deal with the Mavs is now official, per a press release from the team.

MARCH 18: The Mavericks intend to bring journeyman guard Manny Harris back for a second 10-day contract, tweets Marc Stein of ESPN.

The guard saw 7.0 minutes per game in three tastes of action for the playoff hopeful Mavs his first time through.

Considering that the franchise is in the thick of a playoff hunt, it’s unclear how much action the 27-year-old will see in his second deal but he saw 16 minutes in Friday night’s loss to the Sixers.
