The team is also <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/05/coaching-rumors-hawks-van-gundy-pistons.html" target="_blank">expected to interview</a> <strong>Quin Snyder</strong>.</p>
<p>Hornacek is set for an interview with the <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/05/sixers-to-interview-michael-malone-jeff-hornacek.html" target="_blank">Sixers</a>&#0160;as well, and is reportedly drawing <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/05/berger-on-malone-76ers-hornacek-nets.html" target="_blank">interest</a> from the Suns and Bucks. His strong relationship with <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/willide01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Deron Williams</a></strong> could make him a candidate for the Nets opening, too.</p>
<p>The Bobcats appear to be following the same script as last year, when a drawn-out search <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2012/05/the-bobcats-head-coach-search.html" target="_blank">involving roughly a dozen candidates</a>&#0160;took nearly two months to reach a resolution. The team hired college assistant <strong>Mike Dunlap</strong> in a surprise move, and <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/04/bobcats-fire-mike-dunlap.html" target="_blank">fired him</a> about a month ago. Many of last year&#39;s candidates resurfaced in this year&#39;s hunt, <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/04/latest-on-pistons-bobcats-coaching-searches.html" target="_blank">including</a>&#0160;Cavs assistant <strong>Nate Tibbetts</strong>, who wound up <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/05/central-notes-bulls-robinson-cavs-handy.html" target="_blank">joining</a> <strong>Terry Stotts</strong>&#39; staff with the Blazers. Another is <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/shawbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Brian Shaw</a></strong>, to whom Charlotte has once more been <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/04/latest-on-pistons-bobcats-coaching-searches.html" target="_blank">linked</a>. Like last season, the Bobcats would have to wait until after the Pacers&#39; playoff run to speak with him.</p></div>

In a summer of discontent for 29 NBA teams (and the city of Seattle), there are still plenty of question marks, like Hornacek, with uncertain, yet bright futures. Like the next item on our list...
</p>
<ul>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/o/odengr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Greg Oden</a></strong> continues to impress those who have seen him workout, with the latest being predraft workout partner and former Ohio State forward, <strong>Deshaun Thomas</strong>, who told the <a href="http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/index.ssf/2013/05/shabazz_muhammad_among_trail_blazers_interviewees.html" target="_blank">The Oregonian&#39;s Jason Quick</a> the former number one pick, &quot;looks unbelievable.&quot; We&#39;ve already shared <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/05/eastern-notes-2.html" target="_blank">Mary Schmitt Boyer&#39;s assessment</a>&#0160;that Oden looks terrific. A <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/05/free-agent-stock-watch-greg-oden.html" target="_blank">number of Eastern Conference teams</a> have already targeted the rehabilitating center and it appears only a matter of time before he&#39;s back in the league.&#0160;</li>
<li>Speaking of comebacks, what are the <strong>Celtics</strong> going to do this offseason? <a href="http://bostonherald.com/sports/celtics_nba/boston_celtics/2013/05/execs_split_on_c_s_chances" target="_blank">Steve Bulpett at the Boston Herald</a> did an informal survey of general managers at the predraft combine in Chicago on Friday, and they were as undecided as most observers. Some believe the Celtics may make another go of it with <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/piercpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Paul Pierce</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/garneke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Kevin Garnett</a></strong>, while others think they could blow the whole thing up and trade their franchise mainstays since the summer of 2007 for younger players and draft picks.&#0160;</li>
<li>The <strong>Thunder</strong> aren&#39;t undecided; they&#39;re title contenders now, and&#0160;<a href="http://newsok.com/oklahoma-city-thunder-the-time-has-come-for-okcs-young-players/article/3826866?custom_click=rss" target="_blank">Barry Tramel writes at the Oklahoman</a>&#0160;that&#0160;the Thunder are unlikely to make any splashy moves this offseason with about $66.12MM in salary for 10 players next season. The time for the young team to win is now.</li>
<li>Also, the Oklahoman&#39;s staff answered four different questions about the <strong>Thunder</strong>&#39;s 2012/13 season, the most tenuous one being: <a href="http://newsok.com/four-burning-questions-was-the-thunders-season-a-failure/article/3826848?custom_click=rss" target="_blank">was the Thunder&#39;s season a failure</a>?</li>

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>A source tells&#0160;<a href="http://blogs.mercurynews.com/kawakami/2013/05/18/warriors-extras-the-landryjack-luxury-tax-crunch-possible-acquisitions-to-consider-buying-a-pick-and-more/" target="_blank">Tim Kawakami of the Bay Area News Group</a>&#0160;that first- and second-round draft picks will likely be available around the time of the draft in exchange for little more than cash. I&#39;d be surprised if any team gave up a first-rounder for such paltry&#0160;return, however, even considering the purported weakness of this year&#39;s crop of prospects. No first-round picks changed hands at the trade deadline, when teams were reluctant to give them up. The <strong>Warriors</strong> don&#39;t have a pick in this year&#39;s draft and co-owner Joe Lacob has shown the willingness to spend to acquire a selection in the past, as Kawakami points out,&#0160;so perhaps they&#39;ll net a second-rounder this year.</p>
<p>There&#39;s more on the Warriors and their Western Conference rivals, as we detail here:</p>
<ul>
<li>Kawakami also hears talk about a hypothetical trade scenario involving <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?search=David+Lee&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">David Lee</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/gasolpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Pau Gasol</a></strong>, though he strongly cautions that Gasol&#39;s name was brought up merely as an example of the kind of player the <strong>Warriors</strong> might pursue in a trade for Lee. Chris Haynes of CSNNW.com adds (<a href="https://twitter.com/ChrisBHaynes/status/335453770098020352" target="_blank">via Twitter</a>) that the Blazers met with Ledo yesterday.</li>
<li><strong>Ryan Kelly</strong> has met with the <strong>Mavericks</strong>, <strong>Celtics</strong>, and <strong>Clippers</strong>, <a href="https://twitter.com/ChrisMannixSI/status/335454621826961408" target="_blank">tweets</a> Chris Mannix of SI.com.</li>

<li>Sam Amico of FOX Sports Ohio <a href="https://twitter.com/SamAmicoFSO/status/335473088135303169" target="_blank">tweets</a> that there&#39;s some speculation at the combine that this could finally be the year the No. 1 pick is traded.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>11:44am:</strong> It took us <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/05/draft-combine-updates-thursday-morning.html" target="_blank">multiple</a> <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/05/draft-combine-updates-thursday-afternoon.html" target="_blank">posts</a> yesterday to round up all the tidbits trickling out of Chicago, where the NBA is holding its draft combine this week. We&#39;ll see if today is as busy, but in the meantime, here are the latest updates on the 2013 draft:</p>
<ul>
<li>Some NBA executives believe that it&#39;s possible <strong>Shabazz Muhammad</strong> falls out of the top 10 and perhaps even the lottery on draft night, writes <a href="http://hangtime.blogs.nba.com/2013/05/16/another-hit-to-muhammad-draft-stock/" target="_blank">Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com</a>.</li>
<li>In an Insider-only piece, <a href="http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/draft2013/story/_/id/9284003/2013-nba-draft-draft-measurements-noel-muhammad-concern-some-gms" target="_blank">ESPN.com&#39;s Chad Ford</a> passes along the official measurements on the players in Chicago, and provides a few thoughts on the results.</li>
<li>Tim Kawakami of the San Jose Mercury News (<a href="https://twitter.com/timkawakami/status/335425251108347904" target="_blank">Twitter link</a>) hears from an NBA source that the <strong>Warriors</strong> believe they can acquire either a first- or second-round pick in this year&#39;s draft, if they so choose. Kawakami adds in a <a href="https://twitter.com/timkawakami/status/335425545909194752" target="_blank">second tweet</a> that a pick would mostly just cost money, but I&#39;m skeptical that the Warriors could pick up a first-rounder without giving up anything of value, or that they&#39;d even want to add a rookie-scale salary, given their proximity to the tax.</li>
<li><strong>Alex Len</strong> met with the <strong>Bobcats</strong> last night and will meet with the <strong>Cavaliers</strong> today, according to tweets from <a href="https://twitter.com/rick_bonnell/status/335427543211601920" target="_blank">Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/JasonLloydABJ/status/335426071803600896" target="_blank">Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon-Journal</a>. David Mayo of MLive.com <a href="https://twitter.com/David_Mayo/status/335427144673013760" target="_blank">tweets</a> that Len has nothing set up with the <strong>Pistons</strong> and &quot;wasn&#39;t too enthused&quot; when asked about them -- perhaps that would change if Detroit jumped into the top three in next week&#39;s lottery.</li>
<li>The <strong>Pistons</strong> will meet with <strong>Rudy Gobert</strong> today, <a href="https://twitter.com/Keith_Langlois/status/335427952768581632" target="_blank">tweets</a> Keith Langlois of Pistons.com.</li>
<li><strong>Steven Adams</strong> interviewed with the <strong>Magic</strong> last night, according to Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel (<a href="https://twitter.com/JoshuaBRobbins/status/335426529892921345" target="_blank">Twitter link</a>). Chad Ford heard that Adams was <a href="http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/blog/_/name/nba_draft/id/9285282/2013-nba-draft-notes-day-1-draft-combine" target="_blank">the big winner</a> on the first day of the combine, with &quot;GM after GM&quot; impressed by his showing.</li>
<li><strong>Kelly Olynyk</strong> has met with the <strong>Bucks</strong>, <a href="https://twitter.com/GeryWoelfel/status/335430268737449984" target="_blank">tweets</a> Gery Woelfel of the Racine Journal Times.</li>
<li><strong>Myck Kabongo</strong> met with the <strong>Knicks</strong> and <strong>Trail Blazers</strong> earlier in the week, says <a href="http://thestar.blogs.com/raptors/2013/05/the-combines-like-a-festival-of-basketball.html" target="_blank">Doug Smith of the Toronto Star</a>. <strong>Mason Plumlee</strong> also expects to meet with the Blazers, <a href="https://twitter.com/jwquick/status/335432630675836928" target="_blank">tweets</a> Jason Quick of the Oregonian.</li>

Sampson had already been on Philadelphia&#39;s list of candidates before former Rockets assistant GM <strong>Sam Hinkie</strong> was hired by the Sixers, but it will be interesting to see whether or not the Houston connection makes Sampson a stronger candidate for the opening.</li>
<li>Mitchell adds in the same piece that Hinkie is believed to be eyeing <strong>Jazz</strong> assistant <strong><strong>Jeff Hornacek</strong></strong> as well.</li>
<li>Hinkie says he&#39;ll look at all options in building his team back up to contention, <a href="http://www.phillyburbs.com/sports/sixers/hinkie-will-consider-all-options-to-make-team-better/article_66181bad-ad30-598a-be8a-5b23207f723c.html" target="_blank">writes PhillyBurbs.com&#39;s Tom Moore</a>.</li>

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>In a twist, the Western Conference playoff game preceded the Eastern Conference tilt on today&#39;s schedule. The <strong>Grizzlies</strong> beat the <strong>Thunder</strong> to claim a 2-1 series lead, while the <strong>Knicks</strong> and <strong>Pacers</strong> are under way in Indiana. The Eastern matchup prompted rare non-Sunday coverage from ABC, but that doesn&#39;t mean there aren&#39;t plenty of intriguing storylines out west, where the latest <strong>Kings</strong> <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/05/maloofs-wont-sell-to-sacramento-bidders.html" target="_blank">developments</a> are threatening to steal the show. Here&#39;s more from the conference that won this year&#39;s All-Star Game:</p>
<ul>
<li>Dave McMenamin of ESPNLosAngeles.com suggests (<a href="https://twitter.com/mcten/status/333331906970144768" target="_blank">via Twitter</a>) that <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/garcifr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Francisco Garcia</a></strong> could be an offseason target for the <strong>Lakers</strong>. The<strong> Rockets</strong> currently hold a $6.4MM option on Garcia, but Houston is extremely unlikely to exercise it, so the 31-year-old appears ticketed for unrestricted free agency.</li>
<li>The next head coach of the <strong>Lakers</strong>&#39; D-League affiliate could be a familiar face for Lakers fans. <a href="http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nba--sources--mark-madsen-to-become-los-angeles-defenders-coach-000752768.html" target="_blank">Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports</a> reports&#0160;that <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/madsema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mark Madsen</a></strong> is finalizing an agreement to become the D-Fenders&#39; new coach.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/conrowi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Will Conroy</a></strong>, a close friend of <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/roybr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Brandon Roy</a></strong>, began the season on Minnesota&#39;s playing roster, but he finished the season as a <strong>Timberwolves</strong> scout. Flip Saunders fired Conroy and another scout with ties to Roy this week, notes&#0160;<a href="http://www.startribune.com/sports/wolves/207025971.html" target="_blank">Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune</a>. The Wolves&#0160;<a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/05/timberwolves-to-release-brandon-roy.html" target="_blank">waived</a>&#0160;Roy on Friday.</li>
<li>The only way the <strong>Jazz</strong> can hold on to assistant coach <strong><strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/hornaje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jeff Hornacek</a></strong></strong>, a candidate for head coaching jobs elsewhere, would be to replace <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/corbity01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Tyrone Corbin</a></strong> with him, and that&#39;s not going to happen, writes&#0160;<a href="http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/jazz/56294441-87/hornacek-jazz-coach-monson.html.csp" target="_blank">Gordon Monson of The Salt Lake Tribune</a>.</li>

Even if the Lakers take Kobe&#39;s $30MM+ salary for next season off their books, it would still be difficult for the team to fit a max contract for Paul under the cap. Regardless, the offseason figures to be full of intrigue in L.A., as always. Here&#39;s the latest from the City of Angels and other Western Conference locales:</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.hoopsworld.com/nba-pm-top-five-destinations-for-josh-smith?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=nba-pm-top-five-destinations-for-josh-smith" target="_blank">HoopsWorld&#39;s Bill Ingram</a> identifies the five teams most likely to lure <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/smithjo03.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Josh Smith</a></strong> away from the <strong>Hawks</strong>, with the <strong>Mavericks</strong> at the top of the list. <div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>When discussing potential landing spots besides L.A. for <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/howardw01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Dwight Howard</a></strong> this summer, many pundits point to Houston as an ideal fit for the big man, given the <strong>Rockets</strong>&#39; combination of young talent and cap space. Of course, the Rockets already have a solid defensive center in their starting lineup, but <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/asikom01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Omer Asik</a></strong> tells <a href="http://blog.chron.com/ultimaterockets/2013/05/omer-asik-not-worried-about-dwight-howard-talk/" target="_blank">Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle</a> that he&#39;s not letting the Howard rumors affect him.</p>
<p><em>&quot;It’s all things that happen out of my control,&quot;</em> Asik said. <em>&quot;I really
don’t know and I really don’t care. Whether it happens, we’ll see. I’m
just looking forward to rest and getting better for the next season.&quot;</em></p>
<p>Here&#39;s more on the Rockets and their Western Conference rivals:</p>
<ul>
<li>Although the <strong>Rockets</strong> are unlikely to exercise a team option that would pay him $6.4MM, <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/garcifr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Francisco Garcia</a></strong> would still like to find a way to return to Houston, as <a href="http://blog.chron.com/ultimaterockets/2013/05/francisco-garcia-wants-to-return-if-he-fits-in-rockets-cap/" target="_blank">he tells Feigen</a>.</li>
<li>After explaining over the weekend why <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/perkike01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Kendrick Perkins</a></strong> is unlikely to be amnestied, <a href="http://newsok.com/article/3806962" target="_blank">Darnell Mayberry of the Oklahoman</a> wonders if the <strong>Thunder</strong> big man is undervalued, at least by fans.</li>
<li>If the <strong>Jazz</strong> don&#39;t spend heavily this summer, it will
 be a &quot;strategic decision&quot; rather than an indication the team is
financially strapped, according to GM Dennis Lindsey (<a href="https://twitter.com/sluhm/status/331269853468045312" target="_blank">Twitter link</a> via Steve Luhm of the Salt Lake Tribune).</li>
<li>Despite an early exit from the postseason, GM <strong>Masai Ujiri</strong> isn&#39;t worried about the <strong>Nuggets</strong>, telling 9News in Denver that the team will <em>&quot;get ready for next season and figure out ways to fix it and get better.&quot;</em> As <a href="http://blogs.denverpost.com/nuggets/2013/05/05/nuggets-gm-masai-ujiri-the-season-and-future-is-nothing-we-need-to-panic-about/8813/" target="_blank">Chris Dempsey of the Denver Post</a> points out, a new contract for Ujiri figures to be one item near the top of the club&#39;s offseason to-do list.</li>
<li>Following another unproductive season, <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/henryxa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Xavier  Henry</a></strong> doesn&#39;t have a clear spot in the <strong>Pelicans</strong>&#39; future plans, writes <a href="http://www.nola.com/hornets/index.ssf/2013/05/for_new_orleans_hornets_xavier.html" target="_blank">Jimmy Smith of the New Orleans Times-Picayune</a>.</li>

<p><em>&quot;Media reports of <strong>Kevin O’Connor</strong>’s departure are inaccurate and he is not
 stepping down. He is fully engaged in Jazz preparations for draft
season. The working relationship between Kevin and <strong>Dennis Lindsey</strong> is
unchanged as both individuals provide valuable expertise, knowledge and
perspective toward building a championship-caliber team. Kevin will be a

needed.&quot;</em></p>
<p><strong>10:05am:</strong> Jazz CEO <strong>Greg Miller</strong> <a href="https://twitter.com/GregInUtah/status/329611556910428160" target="_blank">tweets</a> that O&#39;Connor is not stepping down as executive VP of basketball operations.</p>
<p><strong>8:36am:</strong> A <a href="http://www.kutv.com/news/top-stories/stories/vid_4773.shtml" target="_blank">KUTV report</a> out of Utah last night suggested that Jazz executive vice president of basketball operations <strong>Kevin O&#39;Connor</strong> will be stepping down from his current front office role to transition into a consulting role with the team. However, asked if he was stepping down, O&#39;Connor told Bill Oram of the Salt Lake Tribune, <em>&quot;Not true, and I have no comment.&quot;</em></p>
<p>Despite O&#39;Connor&#39;s denial, we probably shouldn&#39;t dismiss the story entirely quite yet. As Oram notes (<a href="https://twitter.com/tribjazz/status/329452804643098627" target="_blank">via Twitter</a>), he asked O&#39;Connor about stepping down, rather than moving to a consultant position, so the former Jazz general manager could be denying one but not the other. Oram and Steve Luhm of the Salt Lake Tribune both point out (<a href="https://twitter.com/tribjazz/status/329464022942507009" target="_blank">Twitter</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/sluhm/status/329453496845881344" target="_blank">links</a>) that O&#39;Connor <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2012/08/jazz-hire-dennis-lindsey-as-gm.html" target="_blank">hired</a> <strong>Dennis Lindsey</strong> as Utah&#39;s new GM last summer with the intention of Lindsey eventually becoming the head of basketball operations. Change at some point in the not-so-distant future is inevitable, Luhm suggests.</p>
<p>Luhm also confirms KUTV&#39;s report that O&#39;Connor sold his house in Holladay, Utah on April 17th, the same day the Jazz&#39;s season ended when they were eliminated from playoff contention by the Grizzlies. While that could be a further sign that O&#39;Connor will assume a reduced role from his home in North Carolina, as KUTV reported, for now it appears nothing is official.</p>
<p>The Jazz are entering a crucial offseason, with many of the team&#39;s key veterans, including <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/millspa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Paul Millsap</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jeffeal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Al Jefferson</a></strong>, and <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/willima01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mo Williams</a></strong>, facing free agency. Armed with a pair of first round picks and plenty of potential cap space, whoever is running the team&#39;s basketball operations this summer will have plenty of work to do.</p></div>

Beverley was playing in Russia at the beginning of the season, and didn&#39;t make his NBA debut until he completed a week-long stint in the D-League after the Rockets <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/01/latest-on-patrick-beverley-rockets.html" target="_blank">signed</a> him in January. His play tonight underscores the importance of seemingly under-the-radar transactions. As always, we&#39;ll keep track of NBA moves both great and small, and here&#39;s the latest:</p>
<ul>
<li>The <strong>Jazz</strong> may make a strong push to sign <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/mayooj01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">O.J. Mayo</a></strong> this summer, HoopsWorld&#39;s Steve Kyler hears (<a href="https://twitter.com/stevekylerNBA/status/327175154188816385" target="_blank">Twitter link</a>).&#0160;<a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/03/free-agent-stock-watch-oj-mayo.html" target="_blank">Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors</a>&#0160;wrote in March that Mayo could command better than the full mid-level, though that was before the shooting guard&#39;s April slump.&#0160;</li>
<li>Last week Chad Ford of ESPN.com heard University of Miami sophomore <strong>Shane Larkin</strong> was leaning toward entering the draft, but Larkin&#0160;<a href="https://twitter.com/SLarkin_0/status/327140627043196928" target="_blank">tweets</a>&#0160;that his decision is still up in the air, and that he&#39;ll make an announcement Sunday evening.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/collida01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Darren  Collison</a></strong> probably won&#39;t return to the <strong>Mavericks</strong> unless he accepts a backup role, writes&#0160;<a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/mavericks/post/_/id/4695842/buy-or-bye-darren-collison" target="_blank">Tim McMahon of ESPN.com</a>, who nonetheless believes Collison should be a well-paid backup, projecting that he&#39;ll sign a four-year, $15MM deal.</li>
<li>There are plenty of philosophical differences between<strong> Raptors</strong> GM <strong>Bryan Colangelo</strong> and coach <strong>Dwane Casey</strong>, but ownership wouldn&#39;t look kindly upon Colangelo if he fired his third coach in less than five years, observes&#0160;<a href="http://sports.nationalpost.com/2013/04/23/bryan-colangelo-and-dwane-casey-are-married-to-each-other-as-raptors-set-future-course/" target="_blank">Eric Koreen of the National Post</a>.&#0160;</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jordami01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Michael Jordan</a></strong> has hired four coaches, but none of them have lasted as long as three seasons, leading&#0160;<a href="http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2013/04/24/4001863/bobcats-firing-of-mike-dunlap.html" target="_blank">Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer</a>&#0160;to wonder if Jordan and the&#0160;<strong>Bobcats</strong>&#0160;front office are more deserving of blame than former coach&#0160;<strong>Mike Dunlap</strong>.</li>

<content type="xhtml" xml:lang="en-US" xml:base="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/">
<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>The last time <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/willima01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mo Williams</a></strong> signed an NBA contract, he had the look of a rising star amid a second-round success story for the ages. He parlayed an all-around performance of 17.3 points, 6.1 assists and 4.8 rebounds a game into a $51.263MM contract that stretched out over six years, a length that wouldn&#39;t be allowed under the current collective bargaining agreement. Just one season into the arrangement, Milwaukee traded him to the Cavs, who thought he could be a much-needed second scoring option next to <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jamesle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">LeBron James</a></strong>. Williams never really became that kind of player in Cleveland, and two more trades later, his value on the open market isn&#39;t what it used to be.</p>
<p>His replacements struggled when Williams missed two and a half months with a severely sprained right thumb this season, but the Jazz had a better record when he was out (21-15) than when he played (22-24). The 30-year-old averaged 12.9 PPG this year, his fewest since 2005/06, and he did so on an amount of shot attempts that&#39;s held steady the past four seasons. His assists were up over last season, when he primarily played shooting guard next to <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/paulch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Chris Paul</a></strong> with the Clippers, but his turnovers jumped as well, and he finished with an assists-to-turnover ratio of 2.28. &#0160;</p>
<p>Jazz GM <strong>Dennis Lindsey</strong> <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/02/jazz-gm-talks-roster-trades-mo-williams.html" target="_blank">praised</a> Williams&#39; performance prior to the injury this season, and indicated the team was open to bringing him back as the team&#39;s point guard. When Williams returned, his assists went down by one a game and his shooting percentage dropped from .441 to .418. More importantly, the Jazz failed to make the playoffs, and that may weigh most heavily on Lindsey&#39;s mind.</p>
<p>Lindsey and executive vice president of basketball operations <strong>Kevin O&#39;Connor</strong> are notoriously tight-lipped, so it&#39;s hard to say what their opinion of Williams is now. The Jazz only have seven players under contract for next season, meaning the front office has plenty to consider. Negotiating with <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jeffeal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Al Jefferson</a></strong>, <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/millspa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Paul Millsap</a></strong> or their replacements is likely the team&#39;s first priority, so what happens in the early days of free agency could have a significant effect on Williams&#39; next contract.&#0160;</p>
<p>The Alabama product&#39;s declining play figures to bring about a commensurate decline in salary. The question is how much less Williams will have to take after making $8.5MM this season. He&#39;s helped by a class of free agent point guards that&#39;s fairly weak after Paul, who&#39;s likely to re-sign with the Clippers, and restricted free agents <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jennibr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Brandon Jennings</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/t/teaguje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jeff Teague</a></strong>. Teams will likely be choosing between Williams, <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/caldejo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jose Calderon</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jackja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Jarrett Jack</a></strong>. Calderon will probably be the top pick among them, particularly for teams looking for pure, pass-first point guards. Our <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/04/free-agent-stock-watch-jose-calderon.html" target="_blank">Luke Adams</a> estimated that Calderon could command three years and more than $20MM on his next deal.&#0160;</p>
<p>Jack and Williams wound up with precisely the same scoring average this season, though Jack probably played a greater role in his team&#39;s offense down the stretch. A team could give Jack an inflated offer to try to scare off the financially inflexible Warriors, and that may mean a similar offer for Williams. </p>
<p>It&#39;s more likely Williams winds up with the full mid-level exception, which would be a four-year deal with a starting salary of $5.15MM. Taking the mid-level would allow Williams to sign with teams that are over the cap. He&#39;s been with plenty of winning squads of late, but Williams has only once been as far as the conference finals, so winning may be a priority. Williams will be even more likely to sign with a contender if he and agent Mark Bartelstein let teams know he&#39;s open to coming off the bench, as he did last season with the Clippers.</p></div>

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><p>Many believe there&#39;s virtually no chance the<strong> Jazz</strong> will re-sign both <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jeffeal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Al Jefferson</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/millspa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Paul Millsap</a></strong> this summer, and Millsap admits the uncertainty of impending free agency crept into his mind during the season, as&#0160;<a href="http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865578692/Utah-Jazz-Free-agents-to-be-Al-Jefferson-Paul-Millsap-will-have-other-options-in-offseason.html" target="_blank">Mike Sorensen of the Deseret News</a>&#0160;writes.&#0160;<em>&quot;That’s me being honest,&quot;</em>&#0160;Millsap said.<em>&#0160;&quot;It’s a tough thing to try to put it in the back of your head and not think about it. <ul>
<li><strong>Clippers</strong> vice president of basketball operations <strong>Gary Sacks</strong> expressed his support for&#0160;<strong><strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/delnevi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Vinny Del Negro</a></strong></strong> to <a href="http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-clippers-fyi-20130423,0,965687.story" target="_blank">Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times</a>, in response to <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/03/pacific-notes-del-negro-world-peace-kings.html" target="_blank">rumors</a>&#0160;that&#0160;the team <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/04/stein-on-van-gundy-clippers-pistons-grizzlies.html" target="_blank">may not retain</a> the coach. Del Negro is in the final year of his contract, and though he and the Clippers have <a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2012/09/clippers-del-negro-have-talked-extension.html" target="_blank">spoken about an extension</a>, both sides have tabled those talks until after the season.</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/coaches/dunlemi01c.html" target="_blank">Mike Dunleavy Sr.</a></strong> wants to coach again, and he&#39;s told agent Warren LeGarie to investigate the opportunities, reports&#0160;<a href="http://sulia.com/channel/cleveland-cavaliers/f/d93c25e3-6c3f-4d4c-ac9a-e77f49fb234f/?source=twitter" target="_blank">Chris Tomasson of Fox Sports Florida</a>. Dunleavy said he&#39;d limit his search to teams that have the &quot;resources&quot; available to win.</li>
<li>Rival executives have suggested to Chris Mannix of SI.com that <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/hillgr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Grant  Hill</a></strong> could be a fit for the&#0160;<a href="http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2013/04/suns-part-ways-with-gm-lance-blanks.html" target="_blank">general manager opening</a>&#0160;in Phoenix. <ul>
<li>The parting of the <strong>Thunder </strong>and Harden absolutely had to happen, writes <a href="http://newsok.com/oklahoma-city-thunder-okc-and-james-harden-were-a-parting-that-had-to-be/article/3791708?custom_click=rss&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Newsok%2FSports%2FThunder+%28NewsOK.com+RSS+-+sports+%3E%3E+thunder%29" target="_blank">Berry Tramel of The Oklahoman</a>. &#0160;OKC&#39;s four-year, $53MM offer to Harden wasn&#39;t enough and there was no way the Thunder could have afforded to pay four players a combined $59MM next season and $61MM in 2014/15.</li>
<li><a href="http://www.hoopsworld.com/nba-sunday-was-davis-the-right-choice?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=nba-sunday-was-davis-the-right-choice" target="_blank">Derek Page of HoopsWorld</a> questions if the <strong>Pelicans</strong>&#0160;made the right choice in taking <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/davisan02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Anthony Davis</a></strong> No. 1 instead of <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/lillada01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Damian Lillard</a></strong>. &#0160;Teammate and fellow top-10 pick <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/riverau01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Austin Rivers</a></strong> credited Lillard for having a strong rookie season but said that he is 100% confident that New Orleans made the right call.</li>
<li>An exciting offseason awaits the <strong>Jazz </strong>and all of their free agents, writes <a href="http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865578733/Mike-Sorensen-Exciting-offseason-awaits-the-Utah-Jazz-and-all-their-free-agents.html" target="_blank">Mike Sorensen of the Deseret News</a>. &#0160;Sorensen sees Utah letting <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jeffeal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Al  Jefferson</a></strong> go and instead retaining either <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/millspa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Paul  Millsap</a></strong> or <strong><a href="http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/willima01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com" target="_blank">Mo  Williams</a></strong>, but not both. &#0160;</li>
