Suns Claim Luis Scola

AUGUST 8, 6:05pm: The Suns will pay Scola $4.15MM this year, $4.5MM in 2013/14 and a partially guaranteed $4.87MM in 2014/15, according to Paul Coro of The Arizona Republic (via Twitter).

JULY 16, 3:49pm: A source tells SI.com's Sam Amick (Twitter link) that the winning bid for Scola was actually $13.5MM for three years. Either way, Phoenix will be paying for the forward between $4MM and $5MM annually.

JULY 15, 9:35pm: An NBA source has confirmed that the Suns' winning bid was $13MM for three years, tweets Mary Schmidt Boyer of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. She also confirmed that the Cavaliers did submit a bid.

4:18pm: The Phoenix Suns have won the amnesty waiver auction for Luis Scola, according to a tweet from NBA.com's David Aldridge. The former Rockets forward was officially amnestied by Houston on Friday. Several teams had shown interest in Scola, including the Mavericks and Cavaliers.

Given the large sum of money any team attempting to claim Scola would have to pay the forward, it was also speculated he would clear waivers and become an unrestricted free agent. On his previous contract with Houston, Scola was guaranteed $9.4MM and $10.2MM for the next two seasons, and his final season was for $11MM with just $1MM guaranteed.

Because of this, Phoenix will have to account for the non-guaranteed $10MM over the next three years, thus starting the bid at a minimum of around $3.3MM.

Scola had a solid season for Houston last year, but saw dips in scoring and rebounding averages. While he's still above average at his position, the Argentinian's contract made his situation in Houston a difficult one for a team desperately searching for a superstar.
