Although Derrick Rose spoke optimistically earlier in the season about a possible contract extension with the Knicks, and the team was said to be open to the idea, there were already questions about the long-term outlook of the relationship even before Rose went AWOL on Monday, missing the team’s game against New Orleans.
The Knicks and Rose patched things up following his unexpected absence, with the team accepting the point guard’s explanation and choosing to fine him rather than suspend him. Rose was back in the starting lineup on Wednesday night, and had a solid game, though the Knicks blew a big fourth-quarter lead to the Sixers.
Still, there were reports this week suggesting that the relationship between Rose and head coach Jeff Hornacek is frayed, along with reports that indicated the former MVP’s future in New York looks increasingly uncertain.
Rose is a free agent at season’s end, and while there are rumblings that he could seek a maximum-salary contract, he’s unlikely to land a deal in that neighborhood. His ability to slash and create on offense provides the Knicks with a skill set that their other guards don’t possess, but based on the way the first half has played out, there’s a good chance the team looks elsewhere to fill that point guard position.
If things continue to go south in New York, it’s possible Rose won’t even finish the season with the club — if the Knicks fall out of the playoff race and know they won’t re-sign Rose, there would be little reason to keep him, so a trade or buyout could be in play.

Derrick Will leave in the offseason the Knicks cant get rid of him now unless a great trade presents itself. But rose will be 29 next year the opportunity for a ring is calling him. Most likely Derrick Should sign with the San Antonio Spurs. Pop is maybe the only coach that cares enough to re shape his career and the spurs system is great for rose
Pop wants nothing to do with a Point Guard who doesn’t pass, play defense, shoot threes, and is extremely inefficient while taking 15-20 shots a game. The NBA has shifted drastically and quickly to a three point focused league. Derrick, though certainly not alone (rondo, traditional centers who can’t shoot), has not made this transition and is now a below average point guard behaving like he is the same MVP player he was almost 6 years ago.
Given the right system Derrick can succeed. The closest system to Tom (Thibs) is Pop and the Spurs. Pop has taken a look at all of the players from the Rose Era Bulls. The system Rose is in now is nkt designed for a point guard like him its really designed for Melo to do what ever he does. Secondly parker/rose both only take non contested 3s which Rose usually makes plus the spurs as a team pass enough to make up for Roses attack mentality. Pop would mold rose and get him back to the free throw line basically he’d become jimmy butler with better handles and more finesse
You simply haven’t watched him play basketball since his MVP season if you believe he “usually” hits an open three. Rose worked in Thibs system because he was an outstanding player and transcended any system. He is a shell of that now, and no system or coach will be able to coax anything more than a below average PG out of him. Combine that with a very anti-spurs mindset (he’s all about the money as evidenced by his multiple comments) and Pop is going to want nothing to do with him. He’s not a spurs-type player in the least.
Lastly, (and I can’t believe I ignored this initially) he’s no where near the player Jimmy Butler is and is still becoming. He doesn’t have the basketball IQ or the intangibles Jimmy has, and he certainly cannot be relied upon.
Having lived in Chicago it always was unsurprising how loyal a following he had/has. It also is unsurprising how SOME of his fans (@ “Derrick Rose Fan”) still irrationally believe he is a star, when he is barely a league average point guard. You cannot argue with the statistics he has posted in the last two years while he’s been relatively healthy. He had a good run, was a great story, and is not a great sports tragedy unfortunately. But get over it dude. He’s a shell of the player he was, he hasn’t adapted to the new NBA in the least, and makes questionable (and completely selfish) decision on and off the court.

Rose and Melo gets 20+ a piece and you Knicks fans want them gone? Porzingis is not ready to carry a team, I would honestly trade Porzingis, he’s been outplayed by Davis and now Embiid and the Knicks are in win now mode with the starting 5 they have. Porzingis just doesn’t fit, he basically plays just like Melo and they both don’t fit together out on the floor at the same time.
Probably the worst move they can make would be to trade Porzingis. The Knicks have been in “win-now mode” since they lost in the finals back in ’99. Would love if they traded away Porzingis so they truly would have no asset another team would want.

The Knicks issues are pretty plain to see as an outsider. They have been in win-now mode for too long (this entire century). Every off-season their outlook no matter who is at the helm, is “ok how can we piece this together to be competitive next season”. There is NEVER a plan in place for long term, sustained success. Some will point to the fan base becoming disgruntled and to the NY media making such moves impossible. The Yankees are the counter point, finally realizing building around talented, youthful and cheap players is the way to be competitive year in and year out. The fans/media don’t seem to be knocking the Yankees for their approach.
This team needs to hit the reset button and realize they have someone they can build around in Porzingis. Trim the fat, collect assets, and position yourself to take advantage of a post-LeBron east with Porzingis as a centerpiece flanked by young, talented players. Going into every off-season attempting to sign the best free agent or make the biggest trade, while mortgaging the future has plagued this franchise for long enough. It’s the reason they’re so stagnant. It’s really not difficult to make the playoffs in the NBA and ESPECIALLY in the East since the turn of the century. It’s disgraceful that they haven’t been able to make a sustainable run at any type of success.
They have the pieces to successfully rebuild in place, now they just need to actually do it.
I’ve been saying this for years. The Knicks refuse to do a full teardown and rebuild the proper way. They’ll suck for a couple seasons with all the overpriced vets they made the mistake of signing, wait until they clear cap space and then immediately throw that cap space at other overpriced vets, and then are somehow stunned when it doesn’t work out. Noah, like I thought he would be, has been a disaster. Rose looks completely uninterested in playing defense. Honestly the only player that gives his all on both ends of the court, besides Porzingis, is Kyle O’Quinn, who has been fantastic this season. But the Knicks, primarily because they feel like they have to be in win-now mode because of Melo, keep making the same mistakes. Keep the draft picks and build through the draft. Supplement with vets when needed, but the core of the team has to be draft picks.
The Spurs. The Warriors. The Thunder. The Cavs (besides Love). They all put the core of their teams together by drafting those players who are now superstars. The Knicks try to buy their core and it always blows up in their face. They just never learn. Being a fan of this team is so frustrating.
The spurs have should take a look at him offcourse he is a starter but i feel he should come off the bench on the spurs roster we have way to many point guards and guards if he signs with the spurs for the vets minimum he might get a spot on the team that mean our project on murry he would be on the dleague for a min..drose has alot left in the tank its just managing his minutes is key and using him at the right time hint when playoffs around…he would be a great fit for the spurs parker is getting older, milld is a solid backup point guard drose would upgrade the spurs athletically and not to mention drose has hops for days even with the knee injury!!
