A panel of CSN New England reporters agreed yesterday that the Celtics were unlikely to make a big trade before the February 23 trade deadline. Citing lofty “in-season” price tags, Chris Forsberg went so far as to say that there was “no way,” general manager Danny Ainge would give away too many assets for one star player.
When the conversation shifted to Bulls swingman Jimmy Butler in particular, there was consensus among the scribes that Chicago may be asking too much. “It’s going to take a godfather offer [from the Celtics],” Abby Chin explained, “including two of the Nets picks.”
Over the course of the last few seasons, the Celtics have shown patience in their rebuild and that pattern, they say, is unlikely to end.

- Despite the impending trade deadline Celtics head coach Brad Stevens doesn’t anticipate significant changes to his roster. “When we have a team like we have now, I don’t anticipate a ton of change but you never know what comes to the table,” Stevens told Kyle Draper of CSN New England. “Those are discussions that Danny and his staff will have and they’ll bring anything serious to my table.”
- The Celtics need a better scorer to take some pressure off of Isaiah Thomas in the playoffs, says Bob Ryan of CSN New England, in addition to a role playing rebounder. The scribe echoes a popular sentiment that trading away the Nets’ 2017 first-rounder pick for a player of marginal impact, however, would be unwise. Ryan goes on to acknowledge Jimmy Butler’s strengths as a two-way player but says that the player he would want the C’s to pursue most is DeMarcus Cousins.
- When Isaiah Thomas participates in All-Star festivities this weekend, he’ll be doing so with an ulterior motive. “I’m going to see what guys are talking about and dip my head in there and hopefully bring some more talent to Boston,” the guard told A. Sherrod Blakely of CSN New England.
- The Celtics will have plenty of decisions to make in the next six months, long after the trade deadline comes and goes. One such decision will involve which rookie to draft with the Nets’ 2017 first-round pick writes Johnny Auping of RealGM. Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball, “two ball-dominant guards with unusually developed skillsets for freshmen,” sit atop most mock drafts at this point in the season.
- The forthcoming trade deadline will give the NBA community a clear sense of whether the Celtics plan to win-now or build for the future, writes Moke Hamilton of Basketball Insiders. Hamilton writes that, given the age of their core, the C’s may not want to wait three-to-four years for their young players (and a possible 2017 lottery pick) to develop.
Players like Fultz turn into Westbrook’s and Curry’s!!! Those guys almost never get traded….and don’t often change teams via trade!!! The C’s would be wise to use assets like their own 2018 or 19 #1 pick, the Clipper and Grizzly future #1 picks, Rozier, Yabusele, Zizic, Nader etc… to acquire some reinforcements for this year….and let the 2021 NBA MVP come to us via this Draft w/ the Nets pick

Celtics can’t trade their own first round picks in back-to-back years. And one of the first round picks that they send would definitely have to be the Brooklyn pick. Their own pick loses value when you consider that adding Butler should make them a better team. I don’t think the Grizzlies pick will have too much value either considering they should still have Conley and Gasol leading the way. The Clippers pick could be valuable, but only if Griffin and/or Paul leave in free agency.

I’ve been saying all along that the Celtics aren’t making a trade during the season for a star. Too many obstacles and potential chemistry issues that can all be solved during the offseason. Give it another half a year and then push your assets onto the table. Avery Bradley and the two Nets picks instantly come to mind as three huge assets the Celtics can use to acquire a star. They can even substitute/add other assets (of varying values) such as Crowder/Smart/Rozier/Yabusele/Zizic/Brown/future picks. I’m not 100 percent sold that Ainge even makes a move as I feel like he’s waiting for the price for a star to come down to an unlikely level, but he has all the pieces to make a deal. He just has to be willing to pull the trigger.
Considering that Boogie Cousins and Anthony Davis are unlikely to get traded, Jimmy Butler seems like the most likely option (considering the Pacers are still trying to build around PG and off the top of my head, no other stars seem to be available…not counting Melo). Both Nets picks, Bradley, one of future first/Yabusele/Zizic, and one of Crowder/Smart/Rozier for Butler and another player maybe? Celtics could add/substitute another pick/draft and stash player depending on who else is attached to Butler.
The price is too high in mid season. At the draft and off season is where team changing trades occur. Having so many valuable draft picks seems to work against Ainge. Teams demand them because he has them.
The idea that a team on pace to win 53 games would trade a starter, a sixth man, a rotation player and two lottery picks for Butler is laughable. They gave up less for KG. And KG was a legit superstar. Butler is an all star but he’s no KG and he doesn’t even address their biggest deficiencies(rebounding and interior defense)
KG was also a lot older at the time. But that’s also the price of today’s market.
What are you talking about? Kevin Garnett landed the Wolves Jefferson, Ratliffs expiring contract, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, Ryan Gomes, and a 1st round pick they traded to the celtics before.
Looking at that list the wolves got a starter in jefferson, former 1st round pick telfair rotational player, rotational player in green, and a 6th man in ryan gomes who was coming off 12.1 ppg 5.6 rpg the year before.
The celtics gave up a franchise player in jefferson, two 1st round rotational players, a 6th man, and a 1st round pick.
Jefferson, Green, Telfair, Gomes, Ratliffs expiring contract, and the wolves 1st is way more than what giving up crowder smart and brown and a couple 1sts for butler.
Plain and simple both bulls and gm foreman and danny ainge are cowards! A window of opportunity exist for both teams here with love down. Butler,gibson, and mcdermott to celtics for both nets picks, amir johnson. throw in a 3rd team like magic with hezonja coming to bulls and anyone else celtics want to send like marcus smart, or bradley, or rozier. That deal makes sense for both teams. Bulls go into full tank mode for the next 2 or 3 years and rebuild. celtics have jimmy for the next 4 years. a shooter who can come off the bench in doug. gibson who can give them quality defense and rebounding and his expiring contract to free up cap space. They can compete and beat cavs and give warriors a run for their money.
So the Magic are just throwing in Hezonja and get nothing in return?

Ainge is brilliant he knows what it means to play for the Celtics and players in free agency want to join a team like Boston there is pride and a culture there most players thrive and long for, he can sit back and let it unfold players will be queuing up to join and I believe Durant joined the Warriors and not the Celtics cause he cant handle the pressure of being the man and took the easier road to a ring if you cant beat them join them mentality.

They are one player away. he has the assets to get a top 10 player in this league and you dont find those available ever in trade talks on a affordable contract for the next 4 years. Thats easy bill. Jimmy butler. Reason they are not leaving with new cbs is they get paid alot more by staying. try 25 to 30 percent more. Now that being said unless someone does a sign and trade because a player is unhappy, then that would be the only situation but even those are hard given the money and contracts that have to change hands. Remember in trades you almost have to trade dollar for dollar unless you have lots of cap room to absorb contracts. not many teams have that kind of cap room.

yeah around that. 2003 was very good. but im talking depth. 15 to 20 years were a lottery pick actually meant something not just a guy who becomes a role player. superstar potential. Josh jackson has the potential to be that guy. last few years have been good. parker and wiggins. embid. But from picks 1 thru 14. not bad. even beyond that decent guys with solid floors and tons of upside. Believe me not every pick worsk out, i know that. there are some guys who are more bust than boom potentially.

Bradley, Young, Zeller, 2018 Nets pick and maybe the grizzlies pick depending on the exact details of the trade for Paul George or Butler. Then I think we should try and get Noel for Amir Johnson and the clippers pick or our own 2017 1st round pick (not the Nets). Noel is going to leave Philly no matter what so why not trade him for johnson’s $12 mil salary and a first round pick. After that Ainge could think about signing Nader from Maine and then Celtics could have them a pretty dangerous team

Never said that Paul George is going anywhere. I read the same article you did on how they are dangling their 2017 first rounder to secure a piece to help George. You made it seem as though you thought that Paul George is a point guard and I was just pointing out that he is not.
Also, while I love Jimmy butler, he is not the guy to put them over the top.
The Celtics have quality wings that they can win with. What they need is a big guy to play next to horford. While johnson, jerebko and olynyk are nice pieces, all three are bench guys. They aren’t going to truly contend with butler instead of Crowder in the starting lineup as long as Johnson is starting. The upgrade needs to be over Johnson. Not crowder or Bradley. The Celtics can truly contend with thomas Bradley Crowder horford and cousins/Drummond/etc….. With that said, Danny won’t be moving anything of value for butler but he may be willing to for a big guy

He will not be in a Sixers uniform after this season so why him instead of getting nothing? Or do you not understand common sense

Especially sixers new gm isnt as gullible as sam hinkie used to be. chances are he would want a player and pick back for him. a high pick. Why would he want to stay in Philly having mediocre seasons for the next couple years until they are ready to compete when he can go to Boston, where is from and win a championship. And plus they have to pay Embiid now
The Celtics won’t have their own first round pick this year. They will be swapping it with the nets. Also, Butler is a wing. The Celtics current wings are good enough to win with. What they need is a big rebounding/defensive big to play next to Horford. While Amir Johnson is a good player, you arent going to win with him as a starter.
Thomas is a star point guard
Bradley is becoming a nice secondary option and is,an elite defender
Crowder is a nice 3 and D wing
Horford is a very good all around big man.
Smart has been great all around and is an elite defender.
Olynyk is a nice scoring option off the bench.
What they need is a big man.
personally you guys can keep crowder. not a fan of his. we have seen too many of his type over the last 10 years here. Butler is elite. he has score over 40 points several times this year and hit game winners. celtics are not at cavs level or warriors for that matter without jimmy. plus like i said he have gibson available and lopez . they both outworked and outhustled your bigs the other night. it would all in one package.
I’d rather the C’s keep the picks and the young players. I’m not sold on Butler as a superstar, and I’m not a fan of his attitude after what happened a couple weeks ago.

I say dangle Bradley, one of OUR OWN picks, and the clippers pick and see what can be brought it. Bradley has barely been healthful enough to play in 2017 so far and we’ve been doing fine. Shipping them out should be way more than enough for the Suns to deal Tyson Chandler. Rebounding woes? What are those?
