Braian Angola-Rodas

Magic Waive Braian Angola-Rodas

The Magic have reduced their roster count to the regular season limit, waiving camp invitee Braian Angola-Rodas, according to Josh Robbins of The Orlando Sentinel (via Twitter). The team confirmed the move with an announcement of its own (via Twitter). Orlando now has 15 players on standard NBA contracts and two more on two-way deals.

Angola-Rodas, who began his college career at North Idaho State before transferring to Florida State, went undrafted this year and caught on with the Magic for Summer League and then training camp. The 6’6″ shooting guard averaged 12.5 PPG, 3.9 RPG, and 3.0 APG in his senior year for the Seminoles, knocking down 1.8 threes per game at a 37.6% rate.

Because he was on a non-guaranteed contract, Angola-Rodas won’t leave a cap hit on Orlando’s books. He’s on track to join the team’s G League affiliate, the Lakeland Magic, for the start of the 2018/19 season, per Robbins.

Magic Sign Braian Angola-Rodas

The Magic have signed undrafted rookie Braian Angola-Rodas to an Exhibit 10 contract, per Josh Robbins of The Orlando Sentinel. The transaction was finalized several days ago.

Angola-Rodas, who began his college career at North Idaho State before transferring to Florida State, averaged 12.5 PPG, 3.9 RPG, and 3.0 APG in his senior year for the Seminoles. The 6’6″ shooting guard attempted more three-pointers than two-pointers last season, knocking down 1.8 threes per game at a 37.6% rate.

Angola-Rodas earned a spot on Orlando’s offseason roster despite an underwhelming showing for the club’s Summer League squad earlier this month. In five games (17.4 MPG) in Las Vegas, the 24-year-old averaged 5.4 PPG on 33.3% shooting.

As we explained earlier this week, Exhibit 10 contracts are one-year deals worth the minimum salary. They can be converted into two-way contracts, but players who sign Exhibit 10 deals often end up being waived before the start of regular season and joining their team’s G League affiliate. If Angola-Rodas takes that path, he’ll end up on the Lakeland Magic this fall.

Draft Workouts: Grizzlies, Delgado, Huerter, Alkins

While the Grizzlies hold the fourth overall pick in this year’s draft, the group of prospects working out for the team on Thursday won’t be candidates to come off the board that early. Memphis also holds the No. 32 selection, so today’s workout participants will vie to receive consideration at that spot. According to a team release, Braian Angola (Florida State), Justin Bibbs (Virginia Tech), Chris Chiozza (Florida), Josh Okogie (Georgia Tech), Admiral Schofield (Tennessee), and Jonathan Stark (Murray State) are getting a look today from the Grizzlies.

Here’s more pre-draft workout news:

  • Seton Hall big man Angel Delgado and Maryland guard Kevin Huerter each have workouts on tap with the Lakers and then the Jazz, per Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.com (Twitter links).
  • In addition to his previously reported workouts, Arizona guard Rawle Alkins has an audition with the Suns scheduled for next week, according to Zagoria, who adds that Alkins will also have a Pro Day next Thursday.
  • Zagoria provides another workout update, tweeting that Miami’s Dewan Huell has auditioned for the Thunder, Cavaliers, Bucks, Hawks, and Grizzlies so far. Huell, who is testing the waters without an agent, remains undecided about whether or not to stay in the draft.
  • After working out for Washington this week, Kansas guard Devonte’ Graham will work out for the Suns, Hawks, Rockets, Grizzlies, and about six or seven teams after that, he tells Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington (Twitter link).
  • Xavier’s J.P. Macura, who has a workout lined up with the Spurs, met with the Bucks, Clippers, Magic, and Pacers at this week’s Pro Basketball Combine, tweets Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News.
