Sixers Sign-And-Waive Justin Smith, Patrick McCaw

10:28am: The Sixers have formally confirmed that they signed and then waived both Smith and McCaw.

8:51am: The Sixers are rotating players in and out of the 20th spot on their preseason roster. After signing and waiving guard Mac McClung, the team also signed and waived forward Justin Smith, per NBA.com’s transactions log. Philadelphia subsequently signed veteran swingman Patrick McCaw to fill that 20th slot, per RealGM and the team’s official website.

Smith spent his rookie season with the Raptors 905 after going undrafted out of Arkansas in 2021. He averaged 8.5 points and 5.6 rebounds in 29 games (21.7 MPG) for Toronto’s G League affiliate.

The Delaware Blue Coats acquired Smith’s NBAGL returning rights in a trade with the 905 last week, per Matt Murphy (Twitter link). He likely signed an Exhibit 10 deal with Philadelphia that will assure he receives a bonus worth up to $50K if he spends at least 60 days with the Blue Coats this season.

As for McCaw, the former Warriors and Raptors guard – a three-time NBA champion – has appeared in 199 total NBA games, but finished last season with the Blue Coats, playing a key rotation role for the team as it made a run to the G League Finals. Like Smith, McCaw appears likely to be waived and then head to Delaware as a returning-rights player.

Summer League Commitments: Hawks, Kings, Mavericks, Sixers

Free agent swingman Chandler Hutchison has agreed to play summer league with the Hawks, a league source told Hoops Rumors. Hutchison has spent time with the Bulls, Wizards and Suns since being drafted with the 22nd overall pick in 2018.

The 26-year-old joined Phoenix on a two-way contract this past season. Upon being waived in January, he joined the Heat’s G League affiliate, where he averaged 11.4 points in 20 games.

There’s more summer league news tonight:

  • The Kings have received a commitment from guard DJ Steward to play in Las Vegas, a source told Hoops Rumors. Steward attended training camp with the team in the fall. He averaged 14.6 points per game in the G League this season.
  • Former Boise State star Derrick Alston Jr. will play summer league with the Mavericks, Hoops Rumors has learned. Alston played for the Jazz’s G League affiliate this season, averaging 18.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
  • The Sixers are adding Cassius Winston and Justin Smith to their summer league roster, according to sources. Winston, 24, has spent time with the Wizards on a two-way contract, while Smith, 23, briefly played for the Raptors’ G League affiliate this past season.

205 Early Entrants Declare For 2020 NBA Draft

The NBA has released the official list of early entrants for the 2020 NBA draft, announcing in a press release that 205 players have filed as early entry candidates. Of those prospects, 163 are from colleges, while 42 are international early entrants.

That number falls just short of the previous record for early entrants, established in 2018. Two years ago, 236 early entrants declared for the draft, though ultimately only 91 of those prospects remained in the draft by the final deadline. A year ago, 233 early entrants declared, with 98 remaining in the draft.

This year’s total of 205 early entrants also figures to shrink significantly by June 3 and again by June 15, the two tentative deadlines for players to withdraw their names from the draft pool — assuming those dates aren’t pushed back. But it still looks like the pool will remain crowded, with the eventual number of early entrants likely to exceed 60, the number of picks in the draft.

Draft Decisions: Noi, Mack, German, Carvacho, Bolden

TCU forward Kouat Noi will remain in the draft, Jeff Goodman of WatchStadium.com tweets. The 6’7” Noi averaged 13.9 PPG and 4.9 RPG during his sophomore season. He has workouts upcoming with the Bucks, Kings and Clippers, Goodman adds. Teammate Desmond Bane will return to school, Goodman adds (Twitter link).

  • Alabama swingman Tevin Mack has decided to withdraw from the draft, Goodman reports in another tweet. Mack averaged 9.0 PPG in his junior season.
  • Northern Illinois guard Eugene German will return to school, Goodman adds in another tweet. The point guard averaged 20.4 PPG and 2.9 APG in his junior year.
  • Indiana University guards Devonte Green and Aljami Durham and forward Justin Smith are all expected to return to school, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports (Twitter link).
  • Colorado State’s Nico Carvacho will return to school, Rothstein reports in another tweet. The 6’11” center averaged 16.1 PPG and 12.9 RPG as a junior last season.
  • Duke center Marques Bolden will remain in the draft, Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports tweets. He averaged 5.3 PPG and 4.5 RPG as a junior.

233 Early Entrants Declare For 2019 NBA Draft

The NBA has released the official list of early entrants for the 2019 NBA draft, announcing in a press release that 233 players have filed as early entry candidates. Of those prospects, 175 are from colleges, while 58 are international early entrants.

That number falls just short of the previous record for early entrants, established in 2018. Last year, 236 early entrants declared for the draft, though ultimately only 91 of those prospects remained in the draft by the final deadline.

This year’s total of 233 early entrants also figures to shrink significantly by May 29 and again by June 10, the two key deadlines for players to withdraw their names from the draft pool. But it still looks like that pool will remain crowded, with the eventual number of early entrants almost certainly exceeding 60, the number of picks in the draft.
