Hawks Waive Four Camp Invitees

The Hawks appear to be culling their roster ahead of the official start of the NBA regular season. Atlanta announced today in a press release that it has waived power forward Chris Silva, plus guards Armoni Brooks, Malik Ellison, and Tyson Etienne.

Since going undrafted out of South Carolina in 2019, Silva has bounced around the NBA for the past five seasons, between the Heat, Kings, and Timberwolves. He inked 10-day deals during the 2021/22 season with Miami and Minnesota. In 10 total NBA games last year, the 6’8″ big man averaged 2.6 PPG and 3.6 RPG, across 9.1 MPG. He has also logged time with both the Heat and Timberwolves’ NBAGL clubs, the Sioux Falls Skyforce and the Iowa Wolves, over the years. Silva averaged 17.5 PPG, 9.5 RPG, 3.2 APG, and 0.9 BPG for Iowa over the course of 17 games, including 15 starts.

Brooks, a 6’3″ combo guard, has spent most of his time in the league thus far with the Rockets after going undrafted out of Houston in 2019. The Rockets waived the 24-year-old in February 2022 and he finished last season with Toronto. In 54 games between the Rockets and Raptors last year, Brooks held modest averages of 5.3 PPG, 1.9 RPG and 1.1 SPG.

Ellison was passed over in the 2020 draft out of Hartford. For his initial pro hoops deal, the 6’6″ shooting guard joined Czech club BC Kolin for a brief stint in 2021, then linked up with the Hawks’ NBAGL affiliate, the College Park Skyhawks, near the start of the 2021/22 season. The 26-year-old did sign a 10-day hardship exception deal with Atlanta, but never left the bench for the team, and eventually returned to the Skyhawks once his deal was up. He is thus still technically an NBA rookie. In 26 games with the Skyhawks last year, Ellison mostly came off the bench, averaging 6.8 PPG and 4.7 RPG on .443/.316/.833 shooting splits.

Etienne, 23, signed his training camp deal with the Hawks after going undrafted out of Wichita State, where he was honored as the 2021 AAC Co-Player Of The Year, this past summer. In his final season at Wichita State, Etienne averaged 14.9 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 2.0 APG and 1.1 SPG.

The now-ex-Hawks were all training camp invitees, signed to Exhibit 10 contracts. Lauren L. Williams of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweets that all four players are likely to join the College Park Skyhawks. Should that happen, they’ll be eligible for bonuses worth as much as $50K.

The Hawks now have 14 players signed to their standard 15-man roster heading into their regular season opener next week, including the partially guaranteed contracts of Tyrese Martin and Vit Krejci. Trent Forrest and Jarrett Culver are their two-way contract signees.

Malik Ellison Joins Hawks On Exhibit 10 Contract

SEPTEMBER 16: The Hawks have officially announced the signing of Ellison, confirming the move in a press release.

SEPTEMBER 15: Malik Ellison will sign an Exhibit 10 contract with the Hawks, Ellison’s agent Jerry Dianis informs Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link).

The 6’6″ shooting guard out of Hartford joined Atlanta’s NBAGL club, the College Park Skyhawks, to start the 2021/22 season. In December, the Hawks signed Ellison to a 10-day deal, though he did not appear in a single game for Atlanta. Instead, he returned to College Park to close out the year.

Across 26 regular season contests with the Skyhawks, he averaged 6.8 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 0.8 APG, 0.6 SPG, and 0.6 BPG, with a shooting line of .443/.316/.833. Ellison is coming off an August run with USA Basketball, where he helped Team USA qualify for the 2023 World Cup.

Ellison is on track to join fellow Exhibit 10 signings Tyson Etienne and Chris Silva when Atlanta’s training camp opens later this month. The team has 13 players inked to guaranteed deals on its standard 15-man roster, plus a 14th, Tyrese Martin, on a partially guaranteed deal. Both of the Hawks’ two-way slots are occupied. It is more likely than not that Ellison will return to the Skyhawks to open the season.

Team USA Sets Roster For August World Cup Qualifiers

Team USA will play a pair of qualifying games for the 2023 World Cup this month, squaring off against Uruguay on August 25 in Las Vegas and then facing Colombia on August 29 in Barranquilla, Colombia.

USA Basketball issued a press release today announcing its 12-man roster for those qualifying games. The following players will be representing the U.S. on a club led by head coach Jim Boylen:

McClung is the only member of the 12-man group who is currently under contract with an NBA team, having signed a training camp contract with the Warriors last month. However, everyone on the roster except for Ellison has appeared in at least one NBA regular season game.

Galloway and Jenkins are the most experienced NBA veterans on the roster. Galloway has 452 regular season games for seven teams under his belt, while Jenkins has made 171 appearances for five clubs.

Team USA has a 5-1 record through the first three qualifying windows, putting the squad in a tie for first place with Brazil atop Group F. After this month’s games, the remaining two qualifying windows are scheduled for November and February — teams will end up playing a total of 12 qualifying contests apiece.

The 2023 World Cup will take place in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia from August 25 to September 10 next year. Assuming its team qualifies – which looks like a pretty safe bet – USA Basketball is expected to send a roster of more accomplished NBA veterans to the event.

Summer League Commitments: Sixers, Celtics, Jazz, Mavericks

The Sixers are bringing guard Malik Ellison to summer league, his agent Jerry Dianis told Hoops Rumors. Ellison is the son of Pervis Ellison, who was drafted No. 1 overall in 1989. He signed a 10-day deal with the Hawks this season.

Ellison spent most of the campaign with the Hawks’ G League affiliate, averaging 8.0 points and 4.2 rebounds in 12 games. The 24-year-old also shot 45% from the floor and 46% from deep.

Here are a few more summer league commitments:

Free agent guard Jordan Bone has committed to play summer league with the Celtics next month, a source told Hoops Rumors. Bone, 24, holds NBA experience with the Magic and Pistons.
DJ Funderburk has committed to play with the Jazz during the Salt Lake City Summer League and Las Vegas Summer League, his agent Cervando Tejeda said. Funderburk played in Russia and France this past season.
The Mavericks are adding swingman Isaiah Brown to their summer league roster, according to his agent, Andre Buck. Brown, 24, attended a free-agent mini-camp with the team last week.

Hawks Sign Cameron Oliver, Chris Clemons To 10-Day Contracts

DECEMBER 29: Oliver and Clemons have officially joined the Hawks on 10-day deals, the team announced in a press release. Atlanta is now carrying an unprecedented nine extra players via hardship exceptions and 26 players in total.

DECEMBER 28: With their roster ravaged by COVID-19, the Hawks will sign Cameron Oliver and Chris Clemons to 10-day contracts under the hardship provision, tweets Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Atlanta already had 10 players in the league’s health and safety protocols, and that number grew today when Bogdan Bogdanovic, Gorgui Dieng and Malik Ellison were all added, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (Twitter link). Trae Young cleared protocols Monday after submitting two negative COVID-19 tests.

Oliver, a 25-year-old forward, has been in the G League with the South Bay Lakers, averaging 14.4 points and 7.1 rebounds in 14 games. He was in training camp with the Lakers, but was waived before the season began. He played four games for the Rockets last season after signing a 10-day deal in May.

Clemons, a 24-year-old guard, was playing for the Maine Celtics in the G League, where he averaged 16.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 14 games. He was with the Celtics in training camp and played 33 games for the Rockets during the 2019/20 season.

Hawks Sign Cat Barber, Malik Ellison To 10-Day Deals

8:13am: The Hawks have issued a press release confirming the signing of Barber and announcing that they’ve also signed guard Malik Ellison to a 10-day deal using a hardship exception.

Ellison, the son of former No. 1 overall pick Pervis Ellison, is another call-up from the College Park Skyhawks. He averaged 10.5 PPG and 4.9 RPG with a .505/.423/.640 shooting line in 14 games (29.7 MPG) for Atlanta’s G League team this season. The 6’6″ guard went undrafted out of Hartford in 2020 and played in the Czech Republic last season.

7:28am: The Hawks will promote guard Cat Barber from their G League affiliate and sign him to a 10-day contract via a hardship exception, sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).

As we detailed on Friday, Atlanta was required to sign another replacement after having more players – Onyeka Okongwu and Wesley Iwundu – enter the health and safety protocols. The team had previously signed Lance Stephenson, Malcolm Hill, and Iwundu via hardship exceptions.

Barber, 27, will have an opportunity to make his NBA debut more than five years after he went undrafted out of NC State in 2016. Since then, he has played for a series of international and G League clubs, most recently joining Atlanta’s affiliate, the College Park Skyhawks. In 14 NBAGL games this season, he had averaged 13.4 PPG, 5.6 APG, and 4.1 RPG on .449/.387/.767 shooting in 26.4 minutes per contest.

While Atlanta’s roster has been hit hard by positive COVID-19 tests as of late, the team did get some good news on Saturday — big man Clint Capela has exited the protocols and will play in the Christmas Day game vs. the Knicks, reports ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (via Twitter).

The Hawks still have eight players in the protocols, including Trae Young.
