As Jake Fischer of The Stein Line writes (Substack link), rival teams are curious about which direction the Kings will take after hiring Scott Perry to replace Monte McNair as general manager.
According to Fischer, “there have been no shortage of rumbles” about the possibility of the Kings considering a trade involving DeMar DeRozan this summer.
DeRozan, 35, was acquired by Sacramento in a sign-and-trade last offseason. He will earn approximately $24.6MM in 2025/26 and $25.7MM in ’26/27 before hitting free agency in two years.
While DeRozan remained productive on an individual level in ’24/25, averaging 22.2 PPG, 3.9 RPG and 4.4 APG in 77 appearances, the team had a disappointing season, finishing just 40-42. The Kings were eliminated from playoff contention in the play-in tournament when they lost to Dallas.
The six-time All-Star talked last month about how “uncertainty” weighed heavily on the team during the season — Sacramento fired head coach Mike Brown, replacing him with Doug Christie, and traded De’Aaron Fox for a package that included former Bulls teammate Zach LaVine. And all of that was before the McNair/Perry change last month.
DeRozan will be entering his 17th NBA season in ’25/26 and openly wondered what his future would hold, despite being under contract for two more years.
Wait you mean they won’t be building the future of their franchise around demar derozan? cant believe this Fischer guy scooped Shams he must be losing his fastball
lolol
They should have never acquired him in the first place, Derozan doesnt fit the nba anymore he is stuck in the past and failed to adapt to the way basketball is being played now.
Three bad moves that were fairly big, Huerter, DeRo then trading Fox for LaVine. I’ll be happy if he’s traded, he is and always was a bad fit. And really is for most teams tbh.
Send him to clippers like you want to.
For DJJ & Dunn…a done deal you could say!
DeMar DeRozan still produces but the Sacramento Kings definitely need to trade him.
They also need to trade Zach LaVine Malik Monk and Domantas Sabonis.
It’s time for Scott Perry to rebuild this team.
I think they can get two second round picks for DeMar DeRozan, three second round picks for Zach LaVine. Two second round picks for Malik Monk. I actually think they can get a first round pick for Domantas Sabonis.
None of those guys play defense and they need to get some defensive players in there.
That is why I would keep Keegan Murray Keon Ellis and Devin Carter. Outside of that they need to get as many draft picks as possible.
Blow it up for that first round pick they don’t have
I agree Champ but I see them obtaining Trae Young instead here in about 7 weeks
DeM Der Val and Murray is a perfect salary match, add a pick and its boogie time for ATL
Hilarious to see the Kings in the same position as the Bulls were for a couple of years there. Need to trade LaVine. Need to trade Demar. Will probably hold on to both because their front office is incompetent.
Completely idiotic to inherit the Bulls situation, but yet, here we are, lol.
And hopefully can re-sign Jake too. I’d be okay actually with keeping Domas/Malik but DeRo & Lavine definitely have to go. Problem is they won’t get anything for Zach, if anything at all. It’ll be hard to find someone to take on that contract, with his injury history. Unless the league expands to include Vegas & a Sacramento Kings B team we can trade with, I don’t see it happening.
Jonas Valancuinas will also be a player I would look to trade. All these guys are under contract for two or three years and they need to get draft picks and expiring contracts and embrace a total rebuild. They will be lucky to make the 8th seed with this roster. So why pay the tax for a mediocre non defensive playing team.
They need to get guys that match Doug Christie mentality and playing style.
I was surprised they signed him to that contract in the first place. I can’t blame him for chasing the money instead of a ring.
He doesn’t offer anything to a contender and especially at his asking price.
Maybe some scoring off of the bench like Westbrook but not for 25 million a year.
Vals actually expiring, 2nd year is team option 0 buyout
He’s good to score some points and rebound, but didn’t realize his defense was so poor, even on the inside. Maybe some clueless team like the Lakers will want him since they’re in need of a starting big.
Can’t shoot threes and doesn’t play defense.
Of course the Kings signed him and now regret it lol.
They need to dismantle team, but keep Sabonis.
They need combination of shooters that are not liabilities on defense, and at least two solid defense minded players who can pull off a shot when needed. They need to stop collecting Shooting Guards and play them out of position.
Monte had a rule, acquire mostly 6’4″-6’1″ guys, so hopefully that’s out the window now.
I think the Miami Heat should seriously be looking at him if sacramento’s asking price is not so high. He’s one of the closest alternatives to Jimmy Butler, probably.
For Jaquez & Davion back, they got a deal lol Or straight up DeRo for Ware
It amazes me that some front office personnel still have jobs. EVERYONE knew DeRozan was a terrible fit on that roster – except the suits for the Kings, apparently.
Much like the Suns front office trading for Beal – it goes to show, just because you’re paid to do something, doesn’t mean you know what you’re doing.
Most teams did, that’s why he sat as a FA 10 days after free agency period started. Might as well kept HB if they were gonna downgrade. Barnes had a bigger impact & fit the team well. Were supposed to upgrade his height/length, defense & rebounding, but failed to do that, smdh. Avdija would have been an awesome get for the petty deal the Blazers threw at Washington.
