Josh Hart has reached an agreement with the Knicks to extend the deadline on his $12.9MM player option, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Hart’s decision was originally due by midnight ET today, but that deadline has been pushed back until Thursday.
Re-signing Hart remains a priority for New York, Wojnarowski adds, so the two sides could be working out the details of a long-term contract that would require him to turn down the option. If he declines it without reaching a new agreement with the Knicks, Hart will be unrestricted when free agency begins on Friday.
Hart also has the choice of picking up his option and negotiating an extension off that, Wojnarowski adds, stating that he can start the extension at 140% of his $12.9MM salary. Doing that would enable the Knicks to use their $12.4MM non-taxpayer mid-level exception, Woj points out, adding that New York has about $149MM in guaranteed salary for next season (including Hart’s option), which is $16MM below the projected luxury tax.
If Hart exercises the option without a new deal, he would become eligible for an extension in August that could be worth up to $81MM over four seasons, tweets Fred Katz of The Athletic.
The 28-year-old swingman became a valuable part of coach Tom Thibodeau‘s rotation after being acquired from Portland at the trade deadline. Hart appeared in 25 games after arriving in New York, averaging 10.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 30.0 minutes per night. He also shot 51.9% from three-point range and brought a fiery style that fits in well with Thibodeau’s philosophy.
15 to 20M per is not outlandish for Hart.
$15M per for 4 years is more reasonable. Off the bench seventh man. Anything more I’d have to think they’d need to reconsider. McBride can be that energy off the bench for much less, and those extra funds will be helpful when they look to make a larger deal.
There’s no comparison between the two. Hart is ten times better than McBride. Casual Knick fan
Stop it! McBride is no Hart.
Not insinuating that he is. But he can play the solid defense with hustle role off the bench for a fraction of the cost, allowing the Knicks to focus their dollars on a star rather than the 7th man of the bench at $15-20M per.
I love Hart, but not more than $15M per.
That 12.4 mid level is a nice option to have. Hart is part of the core of this team. So he’ll be taken care off. Im just thinking what other moves can be made here.
Don’t hold your breath Al because Leon Rose will probably keep hoarding all the first round picks like he does every off season because he can’t make a Block Buster Trade to save his life and him and his CAA mafia is scaring players away from this team that I thought the culture was changing but apparently not with Zach Levine and his camp wanting no part of NY and Obi Topping almost coming to blows with our enept coach Thibs who alot of players don’t even want to play for. And by the way you said Wizards were going get a hual for Beal jokes on you jack they traded him for a bag of chips while Leon Rose is asleep at the wheel as usual with a in his headlights because he is asleep at the wheel. I’m tired of his stop gap signings time to swing for the home run and bring another young All Star to this team because we are void of talent. The rebuild is over we almost got to the Eastern Conference finals. Leon Rose we are good but we have to get to being a great team. We need a Robin or Batman to go alongside Jalen Big Buckets Brunson who is our only star and that’s facts. RJ Barrett is a bum who gave us a few good games I’m the playoffs but he still is widley inconsistent. Mitch Robinson is one dimensional and has no offensive game whatsoever so teams can play five against four being he can’t even make a shot in a nurf hoop. Randle is a toxic stud but what he gives you in points and rebounds during the regular season he turns into whodini during the playoffs. We need a star simple and plain.
Rebuild is not over. Jalen s first yr. Thibs and Rose has been here three yrs. This is the problem in NY. You don’t know how to be patient. Thankfully Dolan has stayed away.
Beal would have brought a haul. They waited too long. Plus they still gave him away. Washington is a minor league organization. Forget Zach DeR is a better fit. Frankly Im still wondering if they are all in on Randle. But I see this yr as the yr they look for that big trade. I rather they do this right. Than to just do it cause the fan base wants a so called star. Enjoy the rebuild
Okay, to be clear, you do realize Washington did not “give Beal away,” right? The NTC allowed Beal to pick his destination and the package essentially. So no, they’re not in a “minor league organization.” They’ve had a great offseason.
OK you do realize they didn’t get anything for him. If you traded him now.
First it means he was available to trade before he signed. Next he was available after he signed for a REAL package of assets. So why give him away now …..
Next even with a no trade clause he’s worth more than what you got. Can I make it more simple for you.
Giving him away now only shows the ineptitude of this organization. They could have moved him last yr at TD. And you do know they shut him down last yr so they can get a better pick.

No trade clause doesn’t mean you are his whipping boy. There is always a negotiation among real adults who do business. Even playing him this yr they could have upped his value. This is total amateur hour here. You got more for KP. Who was a FA and a worse player. Little leagues lol.
Yes Alex, you have it all figured out – why these NBA GMs and owners don’t contact you is beyond my comprehension!
So cause I believe Wizards are idiots. That hurts your feelings. I’m sorry I can articulate my thoughts when it comes to ball. The question you should be asking yourself. Is how does he know so much. To even have an opinion ………..
The answer is I care and someone like you doesn’t. Not only do I know this game. I follow it and read about religiously. I can’t get enough information about it. It’s why I always use the term Real Fans.
Something you will never understand .
Only invested enough to respond in paragraphs and essays ; )
Resign him. Trade Fournier, Toppin and pick for all star SF. DeRozan or someone. They need one more
NYK will be exercising their option on McBride and fully guarantying Sims salary, which would bring the number to about 152 mm. Or 139 mm sans Hart. Only 26 mm below tax to sign Hart and use the MLE combined. They’re probably deciding whether it pays to use the full MLE this year, knowing they’ll be right at the tax line and, more importantly, hard capped at 172 mm (which would make in-season trades more difficult). Not sure if there is UFA in that full MLE price range that’s worth it.
I would trade Randle for Jerami Grant straight up. And still trade for DeR. It seems Randles feelings will always be holding us up. Thibs loyalty is going to come back and hurt him.
I wouldn’t worry about Thibs’ loyalty, particularly if a defender like this guy is added. The FO liked Grant as a stretch 4 when he as a FA the last time and went to DET. They were set to pursue him (with Randle on the roster for the year), but then backed off after they drafted Toppin. Shifted to SF’s like Hayward, but were off balance. I doubt they’d be looking to add Grant at this point (over 30 mm) without first jettisoning Randle. Grant doesn’t rebound, but we do have Mitch.
Such an interesting (test market free agency)
While the player pool is pretty bad (tier 1 and 2 ) there’s a pretty solid tier 3 Imo (the exceptions range)
Even outta the 7 cap teams you got teams like Hou (prolly 3 spots open Max, OKC 1 spot, Indy like 2, Orl a little bunched theres not many open roster spots
Should lead to a strange strange Mle market, one where the music will go off before everyone can find chairs….bargain bin shopping should be there but the amount of slam dunks on the MLE (Naz just went) is going to be interesting. I see a lot of them being chopped up for 2 players(ex Plumlee and Schroeder for 6.1 each)
Think we will see less day 1 first hr action this year and the action more spread out over the 3 days evenly than usual. You can feel that everyone is feeling this out and there aren’t many straightforward answers
Yep, it could happen (passivity at the start of the FA period). Particularly since it’s open how many non-cap space teams are likely to use their full MLE? NYK’s can’t be alone in being a team that could, but might determine that a hard cap isn’t worth it. If you’re only using the Txp-MLE, how aggressive can you be. SNT, maybe, but lots of teams (the better ones) can’t do that either due to the same fears of a hard cap. SNT was the new free agency, but maybe now its guys demanding a trade. That it’s a complete clown show doesn’t seem to bother either side.
At least, this year, it appears that the perma cap space teams (aka the perma tankers), might be ready to actually pursue some veteran FAs. Any aggressiveness starts there. Naz was smart not to rely on them.
Yea, although it was gut punch and vomit-worthy I actually saw why OKC took in Bertans, they had like 2 spots max and not a way to spend 35 mill effectively in this blah market. They also can’t extend much future cap as there going to need to sign all their RFAS soon
Its gross for sure but not a huge mis-step in the singular choice, the bigger blunder is obv OKC just flushing (potential) value down the drain every damn year (purposefully), this after a play-in appearance as well
Now SAC doing the complete opposite opening up massive cap w the Holmes trade is puzzling…..i’ll wait to see the end product 2 weeks from now but it smells like overpays are in the water here on some strange names VanFleet Kuzma idk….. Not a market id really wanna over pursue so I’m interested/scared to see how they come out of this
25 pick is already at a minus
Some of SAC’s motives might relate to signing the foreign guy (Sasha something) and/or renegotiating Sabonis’ deal (like IND did with Turner) vs waiting for FA (they can only extend him at below market until then).
Hopefully it’s not to overpay FVV or Kuzma. Not a good independent reason to forefeit a FRP. There are other ways.
$14-16 mil per year for 4 years is more than fair. Or just add 3 year to the $12.9 figure that he’s scheduled to make. Either way Hart will remain a Knick.
