Well-traveled Pistons point guard Dennis Schröder thrived in his role as a pesky reserve throughout Detroit’s playoff series against New York this spring, writes Jared Schwartz of The New York Post.
Following the Pistons’ elimination in a hard-fought first round playoff series on Thursday, Schröder is on track to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. After inking a two-year, $25.4MM deal with Toronto in 2023, he was moved to Brooklyn, Golden State and finally Detroit during the course of the contract.
Although Schröder has expressed appreciation for his experiences with those other clubs, he has especially relished his Pistons tenure.
“I think Detroit is one of the best situations I’ve been in,” Schröder said. “I don’t have to change my style of play, I can be myself. I got a coach who is going at the refs, who is not taking no crap. I’m like that. That’s the reason I’m in the league for 12 years. I’m 6-foot-1, I’ve got to find my way somehow. I love that I don’t have to change myself and I can just be who I am. My teammates embrace me. I just try to help every game.”
Across six playoff games for Detroit, the 31-year-old averaged 12.5 points per night with a shooting line of .491/.476/.813. He also registered averages of 3.7 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 27.4 minutes per game.
There’s more out of the Central Division:
- All-Star Cavaliers guard Darius Garland is considered “day-to-day” ahead of Cleveland’s second round clash against Indiana as he deals with a toe injury, per Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com (subscriber link). “I’m not going to make a judgment either way,” head coach Kenny Atkinson said of Garland’s availability. “There’s some concern there. I could see it go either way. I think it’s something he’s going to have to deal with probably the rest of the playoffs.”
- Pacers All-Star guard Tyrese Haliburton‘s father, John Haliburton, got into an altercation with Milwaukee forward Giannis Antetokounmpo following Indiana’s 119-118 Game 5 overtime contest and series victory. In the wake of that incident, Shams Charania of ESPN reports that the elder Haliburton will stay away from all Pacers games for the foreseeable future. John Haliburton, who apologized to Antetokounmpo after the fact, tried to explain to Scott Agness of Fieldhouse Files (subscriber link) what happened. “Watch the real video and you’ll see that it wasn’t what they thought it was,” John Haliburton said. “Yeah, you saw me standing there looking at Giannis; yeah, you did. But I wasn’t trying to intimidate him. I don’t intimidate nobody, I’m humble. I don’t believe in that, it was just one of those moments.”
- In case you missed it, Antetokounmpo faces an uncertain future following a third straight first round playoff exit and the Game 4 Achilles tear of co-star Damian Lillard.
Schröder going at Kerr for not going at the refs for never calling anything on Curry and just taking this crap when Curry should be getting 10-20 FTAs a game, is a real 3D chess move
The only defense John Haliburton has is his last name – and it isn’t a good one. Clown should be banned from the arena for life.
Man made a mistake at an emotional time. He’s doing the best he can to own it and apologize for it and promise it doesn’t happen again. I’m good with that.
He pays amends by taking a break from the games this year and is welcomed back next season. No problem.
sounds like he’s not owning it tho.
I see what you’re saying. He’s sort of defending what he did.
But I’m giving it to him anyway.., I think he has enough remorse over the episode for me to say he’s owning up to what he did.
That plus I think I’m giving Tyrese’s apology to dad’s side of the ledger and counting it as the family being sorry for the whole thing.
But you’re not wrong and that’s a great point. Hopefully we won’t have to hear from him again to get clarification. Lol.
Man is 50-60 years old and you using the “Man made a mistake” argument haha.
I don’t think he should be on the front row, but if Tyrese wants him there get a suite.
Totally agree if it was a normal fan, we would be banned for life from going to the arena period end of story. Why should he get special treatment, don’t care if he is a parent of the player. This parent should know better, he is a parent for God sake act like one. A player cannot go into the stands to confront a fan, a fan cannot go onto the floor to confront a player for any reason, other fans have been banned for that. Nope if you’re keeping the rule of engagement at the arena with players and fans real than a ban is called for. His Dad is a fan first, he is sitting in a seat, not on the bench if he was on the bench then that is another story.
desertdawg, Thumbs up !! I think your opinion here makes more sense than mine on this topic. Good post.
It is amazing how Davey/Marty can connect a complete unrelated article to Steph Curry to bash Steve Kerr over something that never happened. Schroder never once said anything about Curry getting fouled and Kerr not saying anything about it. He likes to make this stuff up. It never once happened. 3D chess move? It is really bizarre. Totally unhinged.
I blocked Davey, and it’s been peaceful since
You’re a smart man Cam, I’m jealous.
It’s hard for me to do something like that because I’m a fixer and a problem solver. Big-time character flaws that’s for sure.
Better to walk away and let it be most times. I’m still trying to learn that.
You’re a better human being than us Gary. Don’t ever change!
Lol raz.., I know you’re joking…, but I’m glad you only read 1 out of every 10 of my posts to have that opinion.
I saw your post about when Luka got dealt to Lakers and Davey asked you maybe KD now goes to GSW? I remember your response and I nearly fell off my couch. Might be one of the best responses I’ve ever seen on this site. Still makes me chuckle.
Yes, I remember that and Sacramento fan WashingtonBonercats reply was even funnier !!!
He’s the only person I’ve blocked on this website.
Enough abt haliburton pops
Indy had 1 of the most exciting Ws in ftanchise history
And now they banned him? For what???!! He got emotional following his sons epic gm
Giannis is a sensitive sore loser who confronted someone twice his age & half his height. Giannis aint no saint. He coulda walked away but took his frustration out on an old man & now its all anyone talks abt. Move the f on. This is playoff basketball not jerry springer
That’s actually a funny thought. The league IS turning into Jerry Springer !!
Look at the Warriors/Rockets series. It’s Jerry Springer 2 or 3 times per game with the yelling and pushing and shoving and theatrics.
Adam Silver figured out that Jerry Springer was a highly rated TV show for years and years.
A wise man once said, “mimicry is the greatest form of flattery.” So big time kudos from the NBA to Jerry for Ratings, $$, heck Jerry even had spinoff shows lol.
It was round 1, daddy Hali was acting like they got to the Finals. The dad went straight to celebrate in front of Giannis and was talking trash to him. If he was so happy for his son he should have went and hugged him and celebrate with him. Instead he acted like he was actually playing.
but it was ok when dame wasnt playing gm 1, in street clothes, jumped onto the court, got into haliburtons face and was talkin smack? nobody gave a damn. not the refs. not the nba. not the bucks. not the fans. he was a non-player in street clothes who ran onto the court in the middle of a game and talked smack to a player involved in the game. pops said something AFTER the gm was over and he was excited for his sons heroics. he got emotional. if you’re a parent, you never lost your mind when your kid won a big game? yea its rd 1, but its the game & series clincher. when the gm was finished, it was chaotic there was so much happening. and now everyone just looking for controversy. if some old man said some sh** to me i wouldnt give a damn i’d just walk away. instead a 7 foot tall 29 yr old dude confronted someone old enough to be his dad, half his height and was staring him down like a hoodlum. thats the mature response? thats the “classy” answer? enough about the bucks they are ancient history 2 yrs in a row. lets focus on the indy victory which was incredible and historic. the only tm to overcome 7 point deficit with less than 40 secs in a playoff gm in the last 30 years
Dame is an actual player please you are stretching for excuses. Dame would have impact on the actual game and is still playing just because he is in street clothes. A fan is not scoring defending nothing. Again if he is so excited for his son WHY is the 1st thing he is doing is trying to degrade someone? A player that has also accomplished way more. He do that to Bobby Portis he would have been on the ground, but he ran up on Giannis because he is respectful. You can call Bucks ancient history haha Indy is not even remembered. The game was on NBA tv which tells you league don’t care for them winning.
Last night shows to me how Pistons need another playmaker next to Cade. Supporting cast is good but he he needs another ball handler and wing shooter. They are on the verge of breaking thru but needed a series and outcome like this to make them better in the future. Fantastic first round series.
i noticed that too. They need another offensive star. Cade was being double teamed as soon as he touched the ball. They need to bring in somebody that can crash the boards.
I mean losing Isaiah Stewart for the series hurt their rebounding game, but I took a pic of the last play on the game. Cade drew 3 guys around him and NYK collapsed and committed. If there was another ball handler that can take the attention away from him, I think they will be lethal. I would look to possibly acquiring Tyus Jones. He’s a free agent and won’t break the bank. Schroeder is a FA but I don’t think he’ll be back. Also, dark horse would be Terry Rozier who has $26M expiring next year, if Miami decides to reshuffle their roster. Detroit is so far under the cap, they can afford to absorb his entire salary and wouldn’t have to give up anything meaningful.
They get Jaden Ivey back next year so the PG position is filled. Thye have the money and can sign a PF that crashes the boards. They are in a great position for a few years to be a playoff contender.
Schoroder is perfect as the third guard there. They should keep him. I would move Ivey for CJ. CJ and Cade is a serious backcourt. A vet presence who wants to win. Can put 20 a gm easy. Ivey is still trs away. Pistons are ready now. CJ is an upgrade.
