Terry Rozier‘s status in conjunction with a federal probe into suspicious bets gained some clarity today, thanks to a report from ESPN’s David Purdum.
Rozier has not been charged with or accused of wrongdoing by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, but neither has he been cleared, as reports this week indicated.
According to Purdum, the investigation stems from a game Rozier played with the Hornets on March 23, 2023. Ahead of the game, one bettor placed 30 wagers in 46 minutes on the “unders” on Rozier-related prop bets. All 30 bets won after the guard only played 10 minutes in the game before leaving with a foot issue, despite not being on the injury report prior to tip-off. The game was Rozier’s last of the season.
These bets were placed at a casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, which flagged them as suspicious but ultimately paid out the winnings of $13,017.70. At the same time, there was a rush on multiple sportsbooks in New Orleans of “under” bets on Rozier props, which led to a halt being placed on those bets later in the day.
Rozier’s lawyer, Jim Trusty, said that Rozier is not the subject of the investigation, though that was not confirmed nor denied by the U.S. Attorney’s office.
“My hope and expectation is that at some point that they’ll be done with their investigation and will be professional enough to let us know that it’s 100 percent over and that they reached the same conclusion that was reached in 2023,” Trusty said, referencing Rozier’s initial meetings with the FBI and NBA in 2023, which Trusty said resulted in an initial decision of no wrongdoing.
The federal investigation surrounding Rozier is the same one that led to Jontay Porter‘s ban from the NBA, and Purdum reports that there was overlap in the betting accounts that wagered on the two players, though Trusty stated that Rozier has no connections with any of those implicated in Porter’s case.
I don’t think he had anything to do with this. Its weird but what does Rozier get out of this and how or does he know the guy who placed the bets? 13K is nothing to a guy making millions.
There’s a reason why so many professional athletes go broke.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he owed a loan shark money.
That’s offensive
“$13k is nothing to a guy making millions”…
I was riding in the car with an NBA player and he needed to stop to get some gas.
He was practically both front wheels in the gas station area when he suddenly pulled back onto the street.
Surprised, I asked, “What’s wrong??”
As he’s making a U-turn in the street he says, “Shiiit… I glanced over here as I was turning into that gas station and gas is 2cent cheaper over here!” (directly across the street from the original gas station)
This was years ago… and he was making $8mil per year.
But he wasn’t risking the entirety of his future earnings by saving $.30 on 15 gallons of gas. Scary would have been risking the entirety of his guaranteed contact for that 13K, $40/50 million maybe a bit more. Not saying it didn’t happen but it would have been an incredibly stupid risk. Would like to know how much the bets that were declined were for.
If you didn’t get the point, I can’t help you.
Most of the time it is a gambling addiction that leads players or refs to do this kind of thing. It’s not the money, it’s the dopamine. We are going to see more of it with betting being so easy now. Gambling addiction is real.
That being said, rozier could very well not be involved. Could be a trainer, friend, someone cleaning lockers or whoever that over heard something.
With a lawyer named Trusty, you know he’s telling the truth.
This is very troubling…not sure how to feel.
If I were you, I would feel terrible.
Uno like feeling himself
Terrible doesnt begin to describe it. Hurt
You should feel sympathy. If he was involved (which he may not have been), it’s probably because he has an addiction or something else going on.
My guess is that a small circle found out that Rozier was injured. And then someone in that circle made some bad choices on their own.
This is such a waste of taxpayer money. Meanwhile rich people are getting crazy wealthy on insider trading and nothing happens to them. Or legal frontrunning of trading with co-located servers at Nasdaq and NYSE. Or just quant funds.
Backwards Justice Dept.
Greed and money is all the world cares about now
It’s illegal like your terrible takes
His comment has 4 likes your have none. So guess the take isn’t so terrible. Thats democracy…i know that might be uncomfortable for you
13 THOUSAND??? Bro people are so stupid
Did he bet he was going to sit out the rest of the season?
the idea that Rozier would get himself pulled from a game (Spo would never play along with this FYI) so some random guy he has no connection to or record of ever communicating with could cash in what’s less than the average NBA fine for too many technical fouls is NUTS… just NUTS…. the NBA has slandered Rozier over this. A guy realized Rozier was struggling and make smart prop bets… period. That’s what happened lol
