The Warriors are actively encouraging sign-and-trade offers for Jonathan Kuminga, writes Jake Fischer for the Stein Line (subscriber link). However, Fischer adds that they are unwilling to do a deal that would require them to include either Buddy Hield or Moses Moody for salary-matching purposes.
Because of the CBA’s base year compensation rules regarding sign and trades, any deal that would return more than a mid-level type salary would likely require the addition of a second player from Golden State, but Fischer says the Warriors view Moody and Hield as valuable contributors next season.
Hield and Moody emerged as two of the team’s more consistent shooters last season. Moody averaged 9.8 points and 0.8 steals per game while shooting 37.4% on three-pointers. Hield averaged 11.1 PPG and made 37% of his three-pointers while being the only Warrior to play in all 82 games.
Hield is a career 39.7% three-point shooter and his mark last year was actually the second-lowest of his career. Of the returning players on the Warriors’ roster, only Stephen Curry, Quinten Post, and Brandin Podziemski had higher three-point percentages than Moody and/or Hield.
According to Fischer, the Warriors’ unwillingness to include either player is one of the bigger roadblocks facing the team in trade talks.
Warriors only have 9 players so it would be dumb to include one of them unless you are getting 2 players that are real good.
I agree with this a lot. Moses Moody is still young and he has already made great contributions to the team, not to mention he and Kuminga both won a chip in 2022. Buddy Hield might not be young, but he is one of the best volume shooters in the league right now, if not of all-time. What they’re doing might look subtle, but they really hold at least some significant value to the team; trading any of these guys should happen IF they get two players who are really, really good.
Of all time?!
He’s 16th all time in 3s but will probably be top 10 before next season is over.
Because he’s usually been on bad teams and has been a chucker. He’s terrible.
He said volume shooter and he’s correct.
37% is “one of the best volume shooters of all time”? Dude.
Zzzzzzzz…zzzzzz..zzzz
Kuminga and Heild for Seth Curry and Grant Williams?
Seth Curry is free agent.
My bad lol
Maybe Jerami Grant and that’s not even happening.
They simultaneously don’t like him but value him more highly than the rest of the NBA. I hope he signs the qualifying offer.
Pretty sure signing the QO limits his future earnings, but the NBA is so convoluted I could be wrong.
And Warriors management talk as if the rest of the league doesn’t notice that contradiction. Everyone in the league knows Steve Kerr would rather not have Kuminga around.
Nobody is willing to hand out long tern contracts to and of the RFA. They are not getting the max. None of them are max players.
No its just really hard to do a trade where everyone gets what they want normally. It is far more difficult for everyone to get what they want with BYC making the salaries imbalanced in a large way.
Uh, the rest of the league notices that he struggles with his shot, but wants to be paid like an All-Star. That is the contradiction that the teams. Why do you think they didn’t bother guarding him during the season.
I love how this entire “problem” stems directly from Kerr playing Anthony Lamb over both Kuminga and Moody, hindering both of their development, and GSW doubling down on that by badmouthing their own player they poorly developed. Why does Kerr hate them both? Why is Kerr allowed to be this bad at multiple aspects of his job? Who knows
Man at this rate I’d trade Joel Embiid for Jonothan Kuminga.
GSW can have this stacked team Curry Heild Butler Green and Embiid which has another 2 year window max.
Meanwhile my Sixers can forget about their title aspirations which aren’t going to work out and atleast have a relatively bright future ahead with Maxey VJ Kuminga and McCain.
Drummond, Bona and Broome can cover the centre minutes as they did last season.
In an easy eastern conference we would still likely be a play in/play off side anyway
That would be a really bad decision for GSW.
I would do it in a heartbeat. You’re talking Joel Embiid for Jonathan Kuminga?
Embiid is done Gary, Selfish, and done. Needs surgery, refuses to get it. Yet will likely do so after some half a××ed attempt to play this season. Just to collect the cheque while sitting at home. He’s probably worse mentally than physically, that’s saying something. His contract would absolutely destroy the Warriors. Hardly possible anyways. Embiid isn’t a winner on or off the court. You don’t want that. Seeing how Silver is all about changes how about implementing the Embiid rule….you need surgery, go get it asap. You’re destroying your team. I almost feel sorry for Philly fans at this point.
No the problem is that its degenerative and no surgery can really do much to fix it. Maybe it holds up for a few years, maybe…
I know you’re right Nrg82, but wow, can you imagine one playoff run with an 80% healthy Embiid on the Warriors?
That would be an epic final stab at it.
Then Curry could retire, trade the rest of team away and I’d be happy to start from scratch again.
I’m a subscriber to The Stein Line and I gotta say that this article seems rooted in information we all had 5 days ago via Kawakami and Slater… including the fact that Moody and Hield couldn’t be included in the deal.
Summer doldrums.
Problem is the sixers spent a decade trying to get a dominant, best in the league big man, and I don’t think they want to admit defeat by trading the guy it took a decade to find, even if it hasn’t worked out.
Keep dreaming. Nobody is taking that 3ooM contract off your hands unless he shows he is fully healthy for a sustained period. Even then I dont know if you could get any medical staff to sign off on his knee after imaging.
Absolutely a bad deal for GSW but as a Sixers fan I’d happily take it. Gives us direction and a promising future. GSW fans can instead cross their fingers and pray on Embiids health.
If he is fit then good for them I don’t mind if they win a title knowing in 4 years they are cooked with all their old heads. It’s not like we are going to win with what we have.
Maxey VJ Kuminga would be a nice trio. Good athleticism, some defence, shot makers and then McCain off the bench too that’s solid in my eyes. Plus opens a chance for the development of Bona and Broome.
Weren’t the kings the ones trying get him more than anyone? I doubt they want buddy back
How long have I been saying the Warriors haven’t developed Kuminga. And now they must sow the seed they planted. To think Davey J would be the voice of reason on this…….. life
Warriors should be shopping Kuminga. There is no need to keep him around this year. I definitely move him before season starts.
