ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Friday that the Grizzlies are listening to trade offers for Ja Morant, but also said the team is open to keeping him on the roster past the February 5 deadline. John Hollinger of The Athletic, a former high-ranking Grizzlies executive, confirms the team is fielding offers for Morant but is dubious Memphis will retain the 26-year-old beyond Feb. 5.
As Hollinger observes, it’s rare for a team to publicly advertise it’s open to moving one of its top players unless the club already intends to move him. Just a few days after the Hawks were said to be working on a trade with Trae Young, they ended up sending him to Washington. It’s quite possible Memphis already has a deal lined up for Morant and is waiting to see if anyone will top it, according to Hollinger.
Hollinger confirms the Kings and Timberwolves are unlikely to pursue Morant, describing their interest as “lukewarm at best.” While he admits it’s informed speculation, Hollinger points to the Raptors (Immanuel Quickley and other assets) as a team that might be a fit, and calls the Nets a potential “deep dark horse” suitor.
A league source tells The Athletic that Michael Porter Jr. is a “lock” to be traded by Brooklyn ahead of the deadline, with Hollinger suggesting three-team frameworks that send Porter to either the Raptors, Heat or Bucks, Morant to the Nets, and various assets to the Grizzlies.
Here are several more rumors related to Morant:
- There’s a sense around the league that the Grizzlies might be able to get more value for Morant than the Hawks did for Young, according to Sam Vecenie of The Athletic. That could require Memphis to take on long-term money in return, but the team seems more willing to go that route than Atlanta was.
- Still, Jake Fischer of The Stein Line (Substack link) hears the Grizzlies don’t have unrealistic expectations about a potential return package. Fischer confirms they’re looking for young players and draft assets, but says Memphis isn’t expecting anything close to what it received for Desmond Bane over the offseason.
- According to Fischer, while Morant may have never formally requested a trade, it seems both sides were in agreement about seeking a change of scenery. Fischer also hears the Grizzlies want to build around Jaren Jackson Jr., but says that won’t stop opposing teams from calling about his availability and trying to determine through back channels whether the former Defensive Player of the Year is open to a possible exit. Hollinger has heard similar rumblings about Jackson, with Fischer wondering if the Raptors or Hawks might pivot to a pursuit of the 26-year-old big man in the wake of Anthony Davis‘ hand injury.
- Although there were some suggestions early in the season about a potential Morant-LaMelo Ball trade between the Grizzlies and Hornets, that scenario appears unlikely now, Fischer writes.
- The Raptors offered Quickley and unspecified draft compensation to the Hawks for Young prior to last year’s deadline, sources tell Fischer, and maintained a level of interest in the four-time All-Star in 2025/26. The Hawks weren’t interested in taking on Quickley’s contract, as they were instead focused on financial flexibility, but perhaps Memphis would feel differently.
- The Heat have had internal discussions about pursuing Morant, Fischer reports. Morant didn’t like playing under the Noah LaRoche‘s offensive system last season with Memphis, Fischer notes, but Miami has a history of expressing interest in star players regardless of their injury or off-court histories.
- Both Hollinger and Vecenie are skeptical about the Bucks pursuing Morant, but the possibility can’t be ruled out entirely. “They’ve thought about everyone,” one rival executive told Fischer.
I like Hollinger’s proposal in spirit as it definitely makes sense for the Raptors who are desperate for more spacing (and not just fringe rotation types) and the Grizzlies are obviously heading into rebuild territory. But the elephant in the room is the Nets just drafted a whole bunch of point guards. Even if you include one or two of those in exchange for Ja, there’d still be a bit of a glut. Granted, we have no idea if any of them will pan out as starting caliber players and the Nets do seem intent on making waves within the next half year thanks to all the cap space they’ll have, but after going through what they went through with Kyrie/Harden/KD, do they really want to bring in a guy like Ja? Fool me once and all of that.
Raptors not taking Morant, but I believe they would mull over dealing IQ for the right wing/big.
Right, like the Raps need anymore wings.
Don’t see why Toronto would rock the boat rn.
Bucks are the team. Desperate enough to do it , even tho I can’t see it working. But fk it
So nothing new about him and the grizzlies so far has not been given a great offer.
The game is afoot! Who is the unnamed bidder for Morant?
I am stumped. Not sure who it would be. I am going give a wild guess of either the suns or the heat.
Apparently the Heat think they can tame Ja and get him back to all star Ja. Haven’t exactly poured cold water on this rumour either. Matching dollars might be difficult.
They have rozier’s expiring. Fanspo let Rozier and Fonteccio for Morant work. So I think they could make the salary work if they wanted to.
Rozier? Whoa, is he playing ever again? Wiggins been checked out for years. Maybe Miami let him loose.
They have the shooting to put around ja
He would compliment and help develop their young core.
Miami heat culture and the city’s lifestyle plus the young core make Miami the ideal fit.
If anyone can fix ja on and off the court — that’s the organization.
I’d be worried about that lifestyle part in Miami. Lots of distractions when I was in Miami in my younger single days, lols. Ja doesn’t need the Australian accent to get himself in trouble, got some deep pockets.
Jebron Lames!
Hmmm… that could break the log-jam:
LeBron -> CLE
Garland -> MEM
Ja -> CHA
Melo -> LAL
There is already real tension on Grizzlies team. A good offer and I think they trade him. The Heat is a good place. But I don’t think Miami is. Toronto is a good place. Cause I believe they can make a good offer. The money commitment to Ja is significant. So he’s not for everyone. The Jazz need a real PG. They should go after him.
Ja Morant had problems with teammates following suspension as Grizzlies star hits trade block

The jazz were one I was thinking about. Nurk, Kyle Anderson and G Wagon get you there salary wise. kinda the same as the wizards/ Trae deal. If you can get Morant for cheap why not give it a go.
I agree. Especially if they can move Markkanen in a three way. PG is what they need most. Just like Wiz.
The Jazz def should trade for him. I don’t think they’d have to worry about the Utah lifestyle being a bad influence on him too 🤣
Morant in SLC sounds like a match made in hell.
Hollinger is talking out of his arse
That the eff are the raptors going to do with porter?
Right? It’s like they want to assemble a team of injury-prone guys. They already have similar players. I think an upgrade at PG over IQ is a good idea. But adding another winger to the lineup? Pass. You already have a team full of wingers.
Memphis gets – Immanuel Quickley, Ja’Kobe Walter, Ochai Agbaji, Tor’s 2027 1st, Tor’s 2029 1st (both top8 protected)
Toronto gets – Ja Morant & John Konchar
Memphis loses the guy they had pinned their hopes & dreams on a few yrs ago but probably makes their team better in the present & the future with this move. They have to take on over a $100M of money owed to IQ but he can give them a steadying force as a twitchy, sharp-shooting lead guard. To “downgrade” from Ja to IQ they get a couple of 1sts & a couple of fairly cheap young wings in Walter & Ochai.
Toronto gets arguably the most dynamic player & 1 of the most competitive guards in the game. Ja also probably has as much or more playoff experience than anyone else in Tor’s rotation & would probably up their on court toughness as well. He puts so much pressure on defenses with his speed/ball-handling/athleticism/court vision but his/the team’s lack of shooting could be an issue but they’ll def be 1 of the stronger starting 5s in the East.
Too rich for my blood if I am Toronto.
The 2027 draft class is much more comparable to the 2024 class than 2025 or 2026. And the pick they’re giving up would be top8 protected so they shouldn’t be giving up any franchise changing type prospects in this deal. Honestly the best asset they’re giving up here is probably Walter & he’s a guy that looks like he can eventually be a solid rotation player but it’s far from certain that he’ll even be a starter-level guy for a contender in the league. Swapping Ochai for Konchar is about 50/50, esp given the extra yr on Ochai’s contract. Overall I feel like you (like most ppl) are forgetting just how great Ja Morant is. He’s a franchise changing type player. Remember how people underestimated the extent to which Scottie Barnes & more recently Brandon Ingram would change Toronto’s trajectory? Ja is the same type of player & he fits the vibe of what they do as far as dominating the paint & putting pressure on defenses with the dribble drive.
Overpay on Torontos part
IQ, Agbaji and a 1st is really all Toronto should offer for Morant
Heat could also offer Herro Jacquez Jr and a couple 1sts
Curious to know how you feel IQ, Walter & 2 1sts is an overpay but Herro, Jaime & 2 1sts is fair. That Heat offer is an overpay to me lol. Maybe I’m higher on Herro than you but I mean he’s definitely better than IQ, this has been the case since they were on the same team & Herro was obv better. And Jaime Jaquez Jr is def better than Ja’Kobe Walter as well. Walter might have more potential but that’s arguable.
I don’t see heat parting with their 2026 pick
I see them parting with 28 and 30
Heat trade for Morant if get goes down they still have enough offensive options in Bam Wiggins Powell
Outside of would Barnes and Ingram carry a Raptors team is Morant became suspended or hurt? Doubtful
Heat taking a risk is easier than the Raptors
I also don’t have Toronto giving up their 2026 1st. I have them giving up 27 & 29 so the picks even out. You have Bam/Powell/Wiggins as a formidable trio & Raps obv have BI/Scottie/RJ as an equally formidable trio
Assuming Barrett and Ingram stay healthy which hasn’t been the case last couple years while Powell Bam and Wiggins have had healthier seasons
Lot more risk from a Raptor perspective than a Heat perspective
IMO Herro is a better player than Morant and much better than IQ. Would not make that move for Heat, but it sounds like Memphis ain’t asking for much – just don’t want bad contracts like IQ.
Herro and Fontechio would be an almost exact salary match, according to the ESPN article. If it was up me, I would make that trade. Herro is not worth the extension he is seeking, he is often injured, and he doesn’t make the team better, as they seem to historically play better when he is out. Ja could make up for the rim penetration we missed when we lost jimmy buckets. He could also fit the more uptempo play-style that the team has been employing successfully this year. I would also trade him for Kuminga.
If only! You are the only one who thinks Herro for Kuminga is a move. I’m sure dubs would do that.
I think the pendulum has swung a bit too far in the world of hoops rumors discussion. Two way players are great. Elite D guys are awesome, and can help teams win.
While the empty buckets of a Cam Thomas are probably not worth much, Herro, Trae Young. and even LaMelo, are elite offensive players and they have real value in the league.
I am sure I am not the only one that thinks that. And the fact that Trae Was traded for a bag of chips and the Heat are not clamoring to offer (the often injured) Herro’s extension may indicate that you are the one overvaluing. The fact that mediocre teams are scoring 115 points a game may also be a hint. Kuminga has natural athleticism and is dying for a fresh start. I would take a gamble on him. But that is just my opinion.
I hear(o) you. I would rather they get Herro than Norm Powell, but I would love to see Norm thuggin it out for the dubs.
I’m betting on Trae being a big plus for the Wiz. They will have an interesting group if they can get and stay healthy.
Ja in Miami would be extremely interesting but I think a better offer for both teams would be
Miami gets – Ja Morant
Memphis gets – Terry Rozier, Simone Fontecchio, Kasparas Jakucionis, 2026 1st rd pick swap, Mia’s 2029 1st (unprotected)
This way Miami gets to keep Herro who’s scoring/shooting should help this team contend for a title with Ja. They actually keep all their rotation guys in this deal.
For Memphis they don’t take any long term $ outside of Jakucionis’ rookie contract. He still has 3yrs left on that deal after this season in which Memphis could develop him to be their future starting pg. They’d also get $35M+ in savings this off-season when Rozier & Fontecchio expire. The future unprotected 1st would be the big prize of the package but moving up a few spots in this draft (21 to 18 currently) would also be a nice lil boost to the Grizzlies’ rebuild.
Who would give a FRP for the new Derrick Rose, but with gun-issues?
