Within his Suns offseason preview at the Third Apron (Substack link), Yossi Gozlan writes that Phoenix should “seriously consider” reconstructing its roster by trading its top players — including Devin Booker — to acquire draft picks.
As Gozlan explains, the Suns far exceeded external expectations by winning 45 games in 2025/26, ultimately advancing to the playoffs as the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference. However, he thinks the current roster is “likely at its ceiling,” which is why he advocates for a tear-down.
Despite being something of a feel-good story this season, the Suns still have a relatively bleak long-term outlook, according to Gozlan, because they have so few valuable assets and an unenviable cap situation. In no small part because of the dead money owed to Bradley Beal, Phoenix will have to dump salary to avoid the luxury tax just to try and re-sign some of its own free agents, a group that includes Collin Gillespie, Jordan Goodwin and Mark Williams.
Gozlan acknowledges the team appears unlikely to trade Booker and other veterans like Dillon Brooks, but says there’s a good chance that both of those players’ values could be at high points right now, and moving off Booker’s salary in particular would create far more financial flexibility going forward.
Here’s more on the Suns:
- In a story breaking down each player’s role and contract situation ahead of 2026/27, Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic (subscription required) reports that the Suns and Gillespie are already discussing a new contract, and hears the 26-year-old point guard could sign a deal worth $40MM over four years. As for starting center Williams, who will be a restricted free agent if he’s given a $9.6MM qualifying offer, Rankin suggests he’s not a lock to return next season. For what it’s worth, Gozlan viewed Williams as a sign-and-trade candidate, pointing to the Bulls as a team that could make sense as a suitor.
- It will be an important offseason for Khaman Maluach, Rasheer Fleming and Koby Brea, who just finished their rookie campaigns, Rankin states in another article (subscriber link). Maluach could become Phoenix’s starting center next season if the team decides not to retain Williams, while Fleming has a chance to become the starting power forward if he can improve some of his weaknesses, Rankin writes. As for Brea, who spent this season on a two-way deal, he’ll have to take significant strides forward if he wants to crack the rotation in ’26/27.
- In an exclusive interview with Rankin (subscription required), owner Mat Ishbia acknowledges other teams will have interest in the aforementioned free agent trio, but says the team would like to retain them and the feeling is mutual. He also stands behind the decision to trade Kevin Durant to Houston last year. “We knew we had to do it, to make the trade. We knew we were going to make the trade. What we had to do is make sure we got the right things that were aligned with our identity,” Ishbia told Rankin. “We look at it, we got four guys. We got Dillon, Jalen (Green), Khaman and Rasheer because we used those picks to get the 31st pick (in the second round). Those players, could they all start next year, could they start the year after? Those are all four great players. So we feel great about what we did. … I think we did a very good job with it. You look at it now, it turned out to be a great trade for us. Not everyone said that the day we did it, but it turned out to be a fantastic trade for us and a huge part of our resetting our identity with those guys and building for the future as well.”

I agree with Yossi and it comforts me that he thinks this way as well
Booker is gonna be 34 by the time the Beal/Little 23 million evaporates off the books
They are probably losing one of Goodwin/Gillspie or Mark Willams next year while adding nothing but vet mins back
They can still get a haul today for Book and Id Imagine they could get the Lakers 25th pick this year and the 2031 unprotected for Brooks if they act quickly
I don’t see Ishbia doing it but I agree w Yossi
* Nice to see 3rd Apron propping up more here too
They have the non tax payer mid-level exception roughly 15 mil a year and the Bi-annual slightly over 5 mil. So the vet minimum comment is inaccurate.
Without any control over their own draft picks they have no incentive to trade Booker/ Brooks to rebuild with their own picks. Any team trading for Booker would be doing so to compete themselves thereby making the picks in the mid/ late twenties.
The only way they are trading Booker is 1 if he asks out and 2 if they are offered a young ascending player and picks. What contending team is giving them that? If he’s not asking out there is no reason to trade him for less than fair value so what team is giving up a player/ players and picks equal to a 25ppg all star.
I accounted Coliin as the Full NTMLE and Goodwin as the bi annual
They are out of money after that…IF they want to re-up Willams they wont have access to the full NTMLE or really any of it which means you probably lose Collin
Without trading off salary your not going to be able to sign all 3
Suns hold early bird rights on both Gillispe and Goodwin which means they do not need to use MLE or Bi annual for either of their contracts. Williams is far more likely to be sign and traded than allowed to walk outright.
Which will then leave them access to MLE up to the fist apron assuming the do not cut salary anywhere else on the roster. If they move Royce O’Neil which has been reported by some of the Phx insiders who makes roughly 10 million then depending on how much Gillispe and Goodwin sign for it’s likely they will have the full MLE and perhaps the bi annual as well again depending on how much Gillispe and Goodwin sign for.
So in short they will have more than the vet minimum even if they do nothing and if they make a move with either Royce or Grayson or both then depending on the return they will have the full MLE.
Early bird will do nothing as they are off of vet mins and can only bump to 140% (not enough) –
You have 23 mill to apron 1, you cant use the MLE or bi-annual past that
Using The full Mle and Biannual on Goodwin/Collin costs 21 mill (15 +6) – Youd have 2 million as a cushion at that point to your absolute cap. You needed Goodwin and Collin to actually make MORE last year so Early Bird would be relevant
You are again inaccurate
They do not need to use the MLE or Bi-Annual on Gillespie or Goodwin. Early Bird rights allow them to re-sign their own free agents over the cap without using any exceptions. That’s literally what those rights are for.
So when you’re allocating ~$15M (MLE) and ~$6M (BAE) those mechanisms don’t need to be used on them at all.
You are right about the apron constraint—using the full MLE hard caps them at the first apron. But that only matters once you actually use the MLE.
If they re-sign Gillespie and Goodwin via Early Bird rights those exceptions remain available. And like I said, if they move someone like Royce O’Neale and clear ~$10M, that realistically opens the door to using close to the full MLE while staying under the apron.
Bottom line: keeping their own guys and using the MLE are not mutually exclusive—you’re treating them like they are.
Ghost I TOTALLY get they are not mutually exclusive, they don’t have to be to still damn your river up
IF we could break this down simpler- You have less than 23 million to apron 1
That’s NOT enough for Collin /Willams/ and Goodwin to fit under
You can add subtract Royce whatever you want point still stands on paper this team will be less than it was last year. Sort of Yossis whole point to in his article…There’s no upward mobility here in fact there’s probably a loss of some sort as Yossi points out too
And early bird still isnt going to be enough to re-up Collin as his starting starting is so low- Its been rumored the NTMLE which hard caps you . Stretching Beal was absurd and this is why playing out in real time
@Cap & Crunch Early Bird exceptions allows for a player to re-sign for 175% of his previous salary OR 105% of the league-average salary in the previous season (whichever is greater).
@Luka Adams – So what would be the most they could pay Collin off his vet min w early Bird rights (Do you have a ballpark number by chance)?
Im hearing not enough, and the NTMLE will be necessary thus why Im capping them at Apron 1 in all my projections, thus the crunch that boots one of the 3 without any other clean up moves ….
Starting salary for Early Bird usually comes in just below MLE (this year it was $13,936,650 compared to $14,104,000 for MLE), but it allows for 8% raises instead of 5%, so over 3-4 years, the max amounts for both are pretty similar.
I think next year’s Early Bird figure will be around $14.9MM.
Ty, thats very critical I thought it was capped around 6.5 for vet mins so thats good to know
So Phx can retain all 3 they will just be rubbing up against apron 2 if so . Pending how much CG and JG and MW got perhaps they could have the taxpayer MLE of 6 million but doubtful
Still very grim outlook here for Phx iMO
I keep hearing people say this but give me a realistic trade. Be specific. There aren’t any teams he’s going to who have the kind of draft capital it would take to replace him with a franchise player. So what’s the point of getting cap space & role players back without any good picks?
Also, this state would riot if we traded Book. We ride or die with Book. That’s just the way it is.
They can’t be seriously competitive and rebuild with youth at the same time.
Which means they either need to go away from Maluach/Flemings/etc or Booker and the vets.
Considering the years the players they’ve had and runs they tried it seems as if that journey is over and they should probably pivot to going young and restarting. However I doubt Ishbia wants to restart he seems like he only wants to win so I doubt they do anything.
I mean if they went in a new direction there is plenty of high ceiling youngsters they could try gamble on and remain being a somewhat good side. Ja Morant, Zion Williamson, Cam Thomas, Cole Anthony, Jonathan Kuminga all sorts come to mind.
I’d honestly try go after PJ Washington as Dallas has a crowded front court. He’d slot in at PF next to Brooks and that could be a solid fit. Could go big and give them Jalen Green and get back a Daniel Gafford if you wanted.
… Booker Brooks PJ Gafford
… … Dunn Ighodaro Maluach
The most important decision Suns need to make is whether they will get out of the repeater tax. Most people think it would be smart to do that, which means they need to keep their salary under $201 million this year. Trading Green for Gafford )and letting Williams walk) would certainly help do that.
brooks would be the perfect sixer
This is easy
Your main man is Booker
Sooooooo……. you build around him and not trade or get young talent. You can find young talent anywhere and not just the 1st rd
I’ve been saying for a year about Beal’s and Little’s waiving was completely a bone head move. I do think I know a loophole to get rid of those. Lmk
That would be a great price for Collin Gillespie Definitely need to resign him, Goodwin, Mark Williams, Coffey, Huntley and Livers can walk.
Offer a mid level or something for Tobias Harris, Sign Nick Richards, sign a third string C
Offer Jalen Green, Brea and Maluach for Jrue Holiday and a C.
PG……………………………..SG
Jrue Holiday ……..Devin Booker
Collin Gillespie…..Grayson Allen
Bouyea………………Haywood Highsmith
TW young PG……….TW young SG

SF……………………………….PF
Dillion Brooks……..Tobias Harris
Royce O’Neil……….Oso Ighodoro
Ryan Dunn………….Rasheer Fleming
…………………….C

…………….backup through trade
…………….sign third string C
…………….TW young C
Bro they are not trading 24 year old Jalen Green and 20 Maluach for a 35 year old PG and random C. You must be a blazers fan dreaming.
You must be a Suns fan
Young J Green is a SG, Booker is the Suns top guy now for awhile as a SG in his prime. See a problem? You can trade Green and Maluach for a different PG and C of your choice but Holiday is a proven winner. Two time champion. Green is a bust so far. Maybe if 6’3 Green can figure out how to be a PG but I doubt that now
What’s more important
Collecting young talent and draft picks or championships? We know you would pick draft picks
If you think 35 year old Jure Holiday that averages 9 PPG and any center in the league not named Jokic or Wemby means that team is going to “stack championships” then they must sell better drugs where you’re from then where I am.
He averaged 16 and 6 not 9ppg.
I’m saying it could get them further than they are.
It’s either keep building around Booker or trade everyone and start over
I mean I do live in NY and crap is everywhere
Then what would you do if you were the Suns GM?
Basketball has been the one love that has been constant in my life throughout the highs and lows, obsessively always thinking Basketball, I know EVERY player all the way to 1953. Eat sleep breath Basketball. Wish I could turn it off. I have many guidelines on building a team or how to have a championship team. It took along long long time studying books. I wish I had loved something else at first sight. I am still learning, it took 30 plus years to see certain things in the NBA. I even remember the first time seeing it. Books books books but I gave most of them away now as time goes on. I had to study study study study and still studying Basketball to learn the 60’s,70’s and 80’s to know it all. I’ve been doing a project on a book of roster edits all the way to 1953. Blah blah blah blah blah blah Trust me Bro
👀 for the gaters ?????? ——- 85 pts. I think they will stop the game. Like in little keague
raz 🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐👀
If teams do cut back on tanking next year that could be another factor negatively impacting middle-of-the-pack teams on downward. Those extra losses are going to have to come from somewhere.
Great point Shea and Phx is the definition of a middle pack team in the west
Sure IF they were in the East you might have a glimmer of hope but as stands you gotta hit every branch on the luck tree to probably get back to where you landed ( 7 th ) this year
I can imagine by the time free agency is done we will be looking at Phx as a bottom 7 team not a top 7 team in the west
I’d much much much rather take a bet on a team like Utah replacing them ( or gsw ) than Phx holding firm on that 7 spot
But what can not be lost is the Beal stretch , it was egregious at the time and now it’s sewing it’s oats ( and will continue doing so for 4 friggin years yikes 😳
The Suns have to do something pretty dramatic this off-season, or it’s 40 win purgatory for the next half a dozen years.
I don’t see how they can be realistically competitive while Booker is still productive. Time to move him.
Suns should go aftter Ingram. Move Maluach and Green. Raptors can move Green to third team.
Ingram is a good fit with Booker and Brooks. Draft a PG. or best available.
