Although league insiders don’t expect Thunder head of basketball operations Sam Presti to make any “panic moves” following his team’s elimination in a tight Western Conference finals, rival executives have wondered for months whether the team will have to part with certain rotation players beginning this offseason as the roster gets more crowded and more expensive, per Anthony Slater and Tim MacMahon of ESPN.
“There can’t be room for everybody,” one Eastern Conference executive said to ESPN.
Much of the speculation in the wake of Saturday’s Game 7 loss has centered on Chet Holmgren, who shrank against Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama, attempting just two shots from the floor in that do-or-die contest. However, Holmgren continues to be backed within the organization as a “franchise pillar,” write Slater and MacMahon.
Veteran guard Alex Caruso is also viewed as a “firm member” of the long-term core in Oklahoma City after a strong showing in the Western finals, according to Slater and MacMahon, who say that there’s also anticipation among league and team sources that big man Isaiah Hartenstein will return to the team for the 2026/27 season too. That could mean OKC picks up its $28.5MM team option on Hartenstein or turns that option down in order to negotiate a new contract.
Luguentz Dort‘s future with the Thunder is less clear. While his $18.2MM team option isn’t exorbitant, the club has no shortage of reliable wing defenders, including Caruso and Cason Wallace, which could make Dort the odd man out in OKC, observes Kurt Helin of NBC Sports.
While Slater and MacMahon acknowledge that Wallace looks ready to take Dort’s place in the starting five, sources familiar with the thinking of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander tell ESPN that the two-time MVP highly values playing alongside Dort, a fellow Canadian, and is expected to let management know that.
Here’s more on the Thunder:
- If Oklahoma City looks to move players on guaranteed contracts to create more financial flexibility, Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins are potential trade candidates to watch, Slater and MacMahon say. The two wings, who will earn a combined $20MM+ in 2026/27, played regular rotation roles during the season but weren’t used much in the playoffs.
- Rival executives expect Oklahoma City to decline its $7.2MM team option on Kenrich Williams, though there’s a chance the veteran forward, a longtime member of the Thunder, could return to the team on a lower cap hit, Slater and MacMahon report.
- League sources tell ESPN that the Thunder have already had exploratory conversations with teams drafting in the top 10 about what the price would be to move up. While Oklahoma City is armed with the 12th, 17th, and 37th picks this year and has a surplus of future draft assets, the team’s decision on whether to pay the price to move up will likely be made on draft day and will depend on whether a specific target is available.
- While the Thunder front office will have some important roster decisions to make this summer, the 2027 offseason is viewed as the real start of a “financial reckoning” for the organization, according to Slater and MacMahon. That’s when Gilgeous-Alexander’s super-max extension will begin, increasing his salary from roughly 25% of the cap to 35%.

> the Thunder have already had exploratory conversations with teams
> drafting in the top 10 about what the price would be to move up.
IMO, that’s the most interesting thing to watch this off-season. Thunder have 2 FRP’s in this draft and 4 FRP’s in next season’s draft, and no room for them. Consider also that Thomas Sorber, last year’s FRP, and Nikola Topic, FRP from the previous season, need roster spots.
Realistically, Thunder need to move at least 4 of those 6 FRP’s asap.
Other trade assets? in addition to Wiggins and Isiah Joe, one of Jarret McCain or Ajay Mitchell are premium trade assets.
If you’re Memphis, are you turning down Jarret McCain and 3 FRP’s for the 3rd pick?
Topic and Sorber already have roster spots, which have been dead for one or two years due to their injuries and illness.
The Thunder depth with only 13 active roster spots was pretty amazing. Especially with the injury issues to active players.
@jsarver, you’re right about Topic and Sorber already taking roster spots, even though they’ve been injured. My (badly made) point was that they will need real minutes next season.
Also agree that it was amazing how well the Thunder survived so many injuries this year with so few available players.
I could see the Thunder dumping Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins for assets and get back no players. The Thunder will look to trade up or keep a pick and trade the other.
Yes
I’m pretty sure Presti will fleece some team to get under the 2nd apron.
> I’m pretty sure Presti will fleece some team
Safe bet! The NBA always offers some GM’s who will (foolishly) optimize for the short-term, hurting their teams in the mid- and long-term.
And then you’ve got the flat-out dumb GM’s — Joe Dumars, Nico Harrison, whoever has the job at the moment for the Wizards…
McCain is a perfect example of what Presti does.
Just heard that Presti has been checking out the 5 slot in this draft, by offering the Clippers the 12th and 17th picks. If Clippers would bite on that, he offers to send the 5th slot and Chet Holmgren to Memphis for the number 3 spot so the Thunder would take Cameron Boozer (Duke).
Interesting rumors, but, respectfully, I wouldn’t take seriously any source claiming the Thunder would trade 2 FRP’s and Chet Holmgren for Cameron Boozer.
Holmgren may have sucked in his last playoff series, but he’s All-NBA and runner up DPOY after playing only 3 NBA seasons (when he was the #2 player in the draft), and he’s signed for the next 5 seasons. Cameron Boozer still hasn’t played an NBA game.
It’s no slight on Cameron Boozer to say that no NBA GM possessing Chet Holmgren would trade Chet straight up for Cameron Boozer.
It’s Kevin o Cornell’s thinking out loud
Not even a rumor ,
KOC is a hack
Rain Delay, it was KOC who reported this?! Wow.
Yes the boozer idea
He was just rambling out loud , no intel behind it per usual
Not a source to follow/ trust unless you want stock tips on the tech industry
Chet and no 5 for the no 3..I would think he would want some firsts back. If I’m the clippers I want my swap back from next year
Not sure it’s a fleece job. They can get under the apron just by renouncing their rights to their own players, or close. Then they can do the rest with a trade. But the opportunities for trading lots of salary away are miniscule this off-season no matter how much sweetener they’re willing to add, as almost no one has any room and the Thunder don’t really have any bad salary to move anyway.
OKC is in a good spot. If Jalen Williams and AJ Mitchell had played, then OKC would be in the finals and probably win a second title. The luck factor worked against OKC this time.
@johnm, I agree with you.
In the words of the great @GaryRedSoxxxWarriors, “Healthiest team always wins the Championship”.
And we forget that OKC was, by almost 2 years, the youngest team ever to win a ‘Chip. They will continue to get better for many years (as, of course, will San Antonio).
“the great”?? I said this exact same thing too?? Everyone does, its common sense??
@DaveyJ, It’s been a few years, but I thought by now you’d detect my sarcasm.
But, seriously, who amongst us doesn’t consider GRSW to be the HR GOAT?
ahhh i see, sorry, i get slammed nonstop with no sarcasm posts on here its hard to discern when someone does use it
They get one more manageable year. Then all heck breaks loose on their payroll and lots of guys are gonna have to go.
> They get one more manageable year then … lots of guys are
> gonna have to go.
Actually, no. Presti figured out how to beat the CBA. Take a look at the cap table/schedule and you’ll see that they have clear sailing through 2030. It’s because:
1. rookie extension contracts (which SGA is on now and that Williams and Chet will be on for the next 5 years are so much cheaper than equivalent max-type contracts for players in their 30’s.
2. They have a ton of young players on ridiculously inexpensive contracts for the next 2 years. For example, Jarret McCain and Ajay Mitchell make less than $3M/yr for the next 2 years.
3. They have ~30 draft picks between now and 2032, a never-ending pipeline of young and inexpensive talent.
They won’t win a ‘Chip this year, and Wemby may make SAS better, but OKC is going to be a top 2-3 team in the NBA until at least the end of this decade.
One person I’d probably explore would be Jarrett Allen for OKC.
He has the size and athleticism to deal with Wemby, he just doesn’t play to his potential all the time.
Jarrett Allen ($28M 2026-27)
Max Strus ($16.6M 2026-27)
2026 1st round pick (29th overall)
Chet Holmgren ($41.2M 2026-27)
With Allen coming to OKC, they can decline the option for Hartenstein at $28M. Then Strus is a knockdown shooter and can move his feet decent on defense. Would be insurance in case Dort leaves for FA.
Cavs get Chet and team him up with Mitchell/Harden and Mobley. Chet only has to see Wemby twice a year compared to 6-10 times a year.
They do need another ball handler besides Shai/Ajay and JDub at times.
@raz427, All true about Jarret Allen’s basketball abilities, but don’t you think he has a reputation for not being a winning player?
I don’t see him play as much as you do (being in the Midwest), but everything he does says “soft”. IMO, the best complement for Chet will always be a a much more physical big.
I think if Allen plays to the his abilities, he’s a difference maker. Very athletic and long and also can finish in traffic. Soft hands as well. The issue for him is the same that can be said for others, not playing up to their potential. Nobody is asking him to be a 20-10 guy in OKC if that deal happens. They are asking him to play tough in the middle and also make life harder for the 7’5 unicorn they’ll have to deal with for the next 5-10 years.
They only matched up once this season, but Allen more than held his own, outscoring Wemby 27 to 26 and more efficiently, in about the same 28 mines.
Rebs, Wemby 14, JA 12.
I’m not sure that the cavs would agree to that trade, but OKC might feel that Chet will never recover psychologically and getting out of the contract would be a bonus.
I definitely don’t hate this, but man it seems Allen and IHart would not blend well together since there’s no spacing and that’s what I love about the Chet/IHart combo minus the mental shrinkage from Chet. And I feel like it’s best to move on from Dort as he was not quite as impactful this playoff run, though Strus feels like a bit of a step down.
Maybe Chet just needs to hang with the same monks as Wemby
Thanks! I think IHart is gone if they get Allen. I think they would more get a guy like Vucevic to spread the floor if they let IHart walk and if they could acquire JA. Dort looked off in that series, I thought he would be a lock to come back based on his valuable he is in the locker room and on the court, but I think you need to find someone else at a better price than him. They do have 12/17 so they could get someone at 17 to replace him. It’ll be interesting offseason for them.
I suggested Chet should retire and go become a monk yesterday at work lmao funny that you brought monks up with him and Wemby lmao
@raz427, do you believe OKC would prefer Jarrett Allen to Hartenstein?
Seems like a bad deal for Cleveland to be honest. Not that Chet is a bad player – far from it – but a really bad fit for the Cavs when they already have Mobley. Two 7 footers who are better playing PF than C isn’t ideal.
This stuff is so silly. Like the Thunder are going to say – “yes we really want to get rid of Chet”. Instead their only hope is keeping his value as high as possible.
The Thunder aren’t trading Chet Holmgren because the only player that has as much impact on the defensive end is Wembanyama and the Spurs obviously aren’t trading him.
Giannis is better than Chet.
Giannis is obviously better than Chet, but Chet is 8 years younger and makes $15M less per year.
Also, Giannis doesn’t fit in OKC.
Giannis absolutely fits in OKC alongside SGA. I pray that never happens.
Also, specifically, I was replying to this:
“The Thunder aren’t trading Chet Holmgren because the only player that has as much impact on the defensive end is Wembanyama”
Giannis has more impact on defense than Chet.
@ aristotle
I agree, they both need the ball too much for that pairing to work. And OKC has already indicated they aren’t looking to acquire Giannis.
OKC was not the thunder this year. Caruso Wallace 💵. The rest of the words need to find a new home
How is FTA going to “let management know that” about Dort and not say anything and let Presti do his thing like he said he was going to do?
Exactly, what a hypocrite, right?
Luka and JJ should be all over Dort.
Wiggins and Joe are 20m combined. More than likely some trans would line up to get these guys for late frp or multiple seconds. Hartenstein and Dort tags less than their options for next year for long term security. Let’s say Haterstein starts at 18m that saves 10m. Dort at 13m saves another 5. That’s 35m in savings and they are under the first apron. Let’s say they move Chet in and move and take back 15m less than his contact. That gives them the ability to use the full non tax mle next year.
If any GM fleeced anyone this past season was Boston by going from second tax apron to under the tax without costing them any firsts. Plus, Dallas in getting Washington to that AD and get Dallas under the tax
> If any GM fleeced anyone this past season was Boston by going from second
> tax apron to under the tax without costing them any firsts.
I can’t agree with Ainge (or any GM for that matter) dropping under the tax without giving up first round picks. That’s how it usually goes.
But Brad Stevens definitely does deserve plenty of credit for superior long-term roster planning.
