Mavericks To Hire Gersson Rosas As GM
After trading an international prospect's rights to a division rival earlier today, the Mavericks have evened the scales by hiring an executive away from another Southwest team. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Mavs have reached an agreement with Rockets VP of basketball operations Gersson Rosas that will make him Dallas' new general manager.
With owner Mark Cuban and president Donnie Nelson still in place in the Mavericks front office, Rosas won't have the final say on basketball decisions. However, Wojnarowski writes that the 35-year-old "will be given significant latitude to shape the direction of the franchise's pro and college personnel departments, free agency and scouting."
Rosas has spent the last nine years with the Rockets, steadily rising through the organization during that stretch. He has also served as the GM for Houston's D-League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, helping to lead the squad to a pair of D-League titles in recent years. Rosas was reportedly in the mix for the Nuggets' general manager job before Denver hired Tim Connelly.
This is the second time this offseason a Rockets executive has left Houston to assume a GM job with another franchise. Former assistant GM Sam Hinkie is now in control of the Sixers' basketball operations.
Grizzlies Acquire Nick Calathes From Mavs
The Grizzlies have officially acquired the rights to Nick Calathes from the Mavericks, Memphis announced today in a press release. ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported last night that the two sides were close to a deal.
According to the Grizzlies' press release, the 2016 second-round pick Memphis already owed the Mavs is now unprotected. It had previously been top-55 protected.
Calathes, a second-round pick in 2009, has spent the last several seasons playing overseas, most recently for Lokomotiv Kuban in Russia. The 24-year-old guard was named the 2012/13 EuroCup MVP after averaging 12.9 PPG, 5.9 RPG, and 6.7 APG while shooting 52.1% in 17 contests during the EuroCup competition.
Stein's original story suggested that although Calathes is under contract with Lokomotiv Kazan for the coming season, he has an NBA out clause in his deal, and is hoping to make the jump to the Association sooner rather than later.
Odds & Ends: Faverani, Mavs, Rockets, Heat
Signs seem to be pointing toward Brazilian center Vitor Faverani finally joining the Celtics, according to a staff report from the Boston Herald. Faverani's Spanish team in Valencia issued a press release on Friday that the 25-year-old has officially told them that he is leaving the team to pursue his basketball career elsewhere. The Celtics and Faverani agreed on a three-year, $6MM framework of a deal, but the contract was delayed due to the Celts' efforts to get below the luxury tax line of $71.7MM. Grizzlies Close To Acquiring Nick Calathes
The Mavericks are in advanced discussions on a trade with the Grizzlies that would send former second-round pick Nick Calathes to Memphis for future draft considerations, sources with knowledge of the deal tell Marc Stein of ESPN.com. Calathes, a 2009 second-round pick, has spent the last four seasons playing overseas
The Mavericks acknowledged in recent weeks that they were likely to deal the Florida product if they signed Israeli point guard Gal Mekel. Sources say that Dallas has since been in discussions with multiple teams, but it now appears that the pass-first point guard is Memphis-bound. The 24-year-old visited the Mavs in June to meet with team officials and audition for coach Rick Carlisle, but they apparently wanted Mekel more.
Calathes is under contract to his European club, Lokomotiv Kazan, for next season but has an NBA out clause in the deal.
Bernard James Clears Waivers
Center Bernard James has cleared waivers, according to Marc Stein of ESPN.com (via Twitter). The Mavs were forced to waive James for cap reasons, but today's news clears the way for him to re-sign with Dallas.
James is an athletic big man entering his second season in the league and is thought to have a decent amount of upside potential. With a salary less than $1MM, it seemed like there was a good chance of James being picked up by another club. One possible deterrent with James was that claiming him off of waivers would have meant guaranteeing his salary for 2013/14.
The 28-year-old center saw just 9.9 minutes per contest last season and averaged 2.8 PPG.
Mavericks To Waive Josh Akognon
The same need for salary cap room that forced the Mavs to waive Bernard James is prompting them to do the same with Josh Akognon, according to Marc Stein of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Akognon, who spent most of last season in China, will have lucrative offers to return there, but he'd prefer to stay in the NBA, as Stein also tweets. The Mavs would like to give him the opportunity to do so with a training camp invitation if he clears waivers, Stein adds (Twitter link).
Akognon has been on a non-guaranteed minimum-salary deal with Dallas, who originally signed him to a 10-day contract in April. Any team can claim him off waivers and short-circuit the Mavs' plans of bringing him back on board, just as is the case with James. He's the leading scorer on the summer-league Mavs at 17.5 points per game, so there could well be interest from other NBA clubs. The 5'11" 27-year-old also lit up scoreboards in China, pouring in 29.0 PPG this past season and 28.2 in 2011/12.
The Dallas front office is trying to accomodate several deals they've already agreed upon with free agents this summer. As our Free Agent Tracker shows, Dallas has landed five new players this month, and the Mavs are still chasing Greg Oden. The agreements with Monta Ellis and Wayne Ellington haven't become official yet, so it appears the releases of James and Akognon are to make room for them.
Akognon is a client of the Alpha Basketball Agency, according to the Hoops Rumors Agency Database.
Western Rumors, Kaman, Johnson, Splitter, Mavs
The top two free agents this summer came from Western Conference teams, and Dwight Howard and Chris Paul remain in the West, though Howard left the Lakers for the Rockets. That helps maintain the perception of the Western Conference as the stronger side of the league, even as the Heat have won the last two championships. Here's more on a few of the West's teams:
- Mark Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News is high on the resourcefulness of the Lakers this summer in the wake of Howard's decision to bolt. Within the piece, Chris Kaman says he didn't have a lot of other options when he signed with the Lakers, though several other teams reportedly showed interest. Wesley Johnson acknowledged offers from "a lot of different teams," but he called his choice of the Lakers "a no-brainer."
- The Hawks and Trail Blazers talked about deals for Tiago Splitter with agent Arn Tellem, and while Splitter gave thought to leaving the Spurs this month, he jumped on San Antonio's four-year, $36MM offer, and he says the Spurs were always his first option. - The Mavs may need to sign someone from their summer league team to compensate for the departure of Bernard James, according to Dwain Price of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, who examines some of the candidates.
Odds & Ends: Irving, Ellis, Wolters
In his weekly roundup of topics surrounding Cleveland sports teams, Terry Pluto of The Plain Dealer offers his thoughts on Andrew Bynum, the Cavaliers' depth at the big man positions, and Kyrie Irving. Regarding some belief that Tyler Zeller might not get much playing time with the addition of Bynum, the return of Anderson Varejao, and the presence of Tristan Thompson and Anthony Bennett, Pluto believes that the second year big man will be needed since he's skeptical of Bynum and Varejao's injury histories. Southwest Rumors: Barbosa, Oden, James
- Artur Barbosa, who doubles as the brother and agent of Leandro Barbosa, tells Terra Brasil that the Mavs have offered the veteran guard a contract, and that the Dallas option is preferable to the Bulls, who've also shown interest (translation via HoopsHype). The agent says he's also engaged in talks with the Rockets. The Mavs wouldn't comment last night about a Brazilian report linking them to Barbosa, so perhaps this is the report in question.
- Greg Oden is the top big man on the Mavs' radar following the team's signing of Samuel Dalembert and the release of Bernard James, reports Marc Stein of ESPN.com, who names the Heat, Spurs and Pelicans as the other teams still in the mix for Oden (Twitter link).
- There's a legitimate chance that a team claims James off waivers from the Mavs, Stein writes in the same piece. A source close to James tells Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN Twin Cities that he's heard teams are eyeing the big man. The Wolves haven't expressed interest yet, but Minnesota is prepared to waive center Chris Johnson if necessary to make way for a better option, Wolfson reports (Twitter links).
- Spanish club FC Barcelona announced the signing of Kostas Papanikolaou to a four-year deal (translation via Sportando's Emiliano Carchia). The Rockets hold the power forward's NBA rights, but it's unclear what the buyout clauses in his new contract are like. A report last weekend indicated that Papanikolaou "definitely" wants to play in the NBA this season, but signing a long-term European deal seems to run counter to that.
