Nets guard D’Angelo Russell was cited for marijuana possession at LaGuardia Airport on Wednesday before flying from New York to his hometown of Louisville, reports A.J. Perez of USA Today. The TSA found the marijuana stashed in a hidden compartment of what appeared to be an Arizona Iced Tea can.
When Russell was questioned by police about the bag of weed, he claimed it was his brother’s, a source tells Stefan Bondy of The New York Daily News. The All-Star guard ultimately received a summons for possession of under 50 grams of marijuana and was released to fly home.
Although possession of marijuana is still illegal in the state of New York, the legal ramifications are unlikely to be significant, and Russell probably won’t face any real discipline from the NBA. As Perez notes, a player is required to enter the league’s marijuana program if he is convicted of possession of marijuana in violation of the law, but he isn’t subject to a suspension until his third violation of the NBA’s policy.
The Nets, who will hold Russell’s rights as a restricted free agent this offseason, issued a statement confirming they’re looking into the matter, per Brian Lewis of The New York Post (Twitter link).
“We have been made aware of the situation involving D’Angelo Russell and are in the process of gathering more information at this time,” the team said in the statement.

You seem to be missing the point. He isn’t being criticized for the fact that he had/uses cannabis, but for getting caught with it at the airport when he is a high-profile professional athlete about to hit free agency.

You’ll have a very, very difficult time finding anything even close to that in Kentucky. It’s a shame it’s still Federally illegal. The F-ing ticket ($100 or less) is less than a parking ticket! I’ve flown with bud numerous times but I’m a white guy in his 30’s. DLo, a young, rich black guy was racially profiled and they went and searched the hell out of his things. Putting it in the Arizona can was the stupid thing. He should have mailed it to his family or just stuffed it in a jacket pocket in his luggage.
Best part about this is that he tried to hide it in a false Arizona ice tea bottle. That’s something a High school stoner would do not a professional athlete

The Lakers did not make a mistake in trading him and keeping Lonzo! Why would they want 21ppg, 7apg and a shooting line of 44/37/82? When they got Zo and his 8ppg, 6apg and shooting line of 38/32/41.
This is not a factor and not a consideration in the real world of adults where the concept of medication goes beyond what’s manufactured by publicly traded corporations in New Jersey and Switzerland. Dig it, Brooklyn is alternative. If news outlets want to play it straight and not treat this like the nothing that it is, that only shows how late they are to the news, even later than state legislatures, which are themselves coming around on legal cannabis. D’Angelo is on the verge of a huge (and deserved) financial score and should be celebrated rather than made the subject of adverse attention over this, which is the legal equivalent of playing the music too loud in your backyard.

If you smoke weed, you’re better off not smoking than trying to find and smoke the weed in Louisville. Now if he would have waited until the Derby he could have scored quality smoke from almost anyone, but it would have been brought in from out of state. There’s about I don’t know maybe 30% of Americans who oppose legal cannabis and same sex rights. The next 30 years will be telling but the anti-herb and anti-gay faction has to recognize that they’ve basically lost these two battles politically in the US.
