Jazz star Donovan Mitchell will miss Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game due to a non-COVID-related illness, the guard announced today (Twitter link). Mitchell was set to appear in his third career All-Star Game.
“It is a great honor and has always been a dream of mine to be selected as an NBA All-Star,” he said. “Remorsefully, I will not be able to play in tonight’s All-Star Game due to an upper respiratory illness (non-COVID-related).
“The entire All-Star weekend is a celebration of the basketball community, the fans and the sport I am blessed to play. I’m focused on getting well and back out on the court. Thank you for all the get-well wishes. I can’t wait to see the game later today.”
Mitchell was drafted by Team LeBron as a reserve for the game. He’s averaging 25.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists per contest this season, shooting 45.6% from the floor and 35.1% from deep. The Jazz are 36-22 in large part because of his steady production.
This sucks, not that he won’t play, he is just not that good, but… so late won’t be able to get a replacement for him, if he had pulled out earlier maybe a much more deserving guy than himself, like Sabonis could have been there, right?
Let’s just hope he ain’t back for the first game of UTA after the ASG, as it might look like he just wanted the time off to recover from some ailment, it would be very bad optics for me anyway!
Yeah, it’s just terrible that a guy would choose to sit out a glorified scrimmage to recover from an injury or illness so he’s healthy(er) for games that count.
I don’t care about the game per se, is about if he wasn’t gonna play & wants to rest, that’s ok, he ain’t gonna be missed by the way, just say it a bit early & let someone else get the honor of being an All-Star that is my gripe, if players play or not ain’t much important to me, but clearly you didn’t understand my post, dude”

Mitchell is 100% deserving of his spot. But that said it’s disappointing it’s so late to get a deserving replacement. That said, there are a lot of guys in town so it wouldn’t have been impossible had this come out a few hours earlier.
