Once again it seems Unclemike gets an education on just how little he knows about the stupid NBA trade policy. It’s idiotic at best. Mass confusion at it’s worst. I would think a trade exception benefits the team who has it not the team you’re trading to. I would think if you had a trade exception it would let you trade someone WITHOUT having to take back salary which would make sense but apparently I’m naive. It’s amazing to me that anybody can make a trade in this stupid league. Anyway Luke thanks for the education.
The rules are *incredibly* stupid. If an owner wants to take on more salary, just tax it. If they arent going to do that, just have a hard cap, NBA. Salary matching and all the convoluted rules are stupid.
The thinking behind a trade exception is that it allows a team to use a player’s outgoing salary for matching purposes within a year, not necessarily right away.
In LaVine’s case, for instance, they used his $44MMish outgoing salary to take back just $27MMish in that trade with the Kings/Spurs (they took back more salary overall, but didn’t need to use LaVine’s salary to match the rest). So they’re given a year to take back another $17MM in a separate deal, if they want to.
It can definitely be a benefit, but the team has to have the cap flexibility to keep taking on additional salary.
Don’t even get me started on the trading of draft picks with 30 conditions attached. You have teams trading draft picks in the year 2032 with 30 conditions attached. We keep the pick if the draft falls on a day other than Thursday in a leap year and if we decide we really need him(Her),You lose. How does any of that fly? You have draft picks that have been traded like 7 times. You see stuff like Draft pick 15 is Dallas, From NY, From Phi, From San Antonio, From Denver through Barcelona if he doesn’t decide to play soccer. Gimme a break. Who keeps track of that stuff? He must be insane by now.
Luke, coming back to the Nets… because I think they’re a really interesting story right now… I don’t think they can delay their progression forward just because they have their own pick. We know that going all in on a tank is a bad strategy given the structure of the lottery.
And the idea of the Nets ‘not yet having their core in place’ so they shouldn’t begin to push chips in yet.. well, they could be waiting for a while if looking to strike gold on a draft pick. I think the better strategy is to start to build something by adding a quality FA this year, while they have a financial advantage over just about the rest of the league. They could actually be competitive next year given the infusion of talent coming thru the draft and a good FA or 2.
They have to start winning and learning how to close out games so that they become a desirable destination for elite talent. And I don’t think Jordi will be patient to endure another bottom feeding year.
Thinking about this further, the FA they go after is probably Santi Aldama, given need, that he’s still young, and that he’s got the connection with Jordi both being from Spain.
He’s a restricted FA but that’s probably a good target and the Grizzlies might have a hard time justifying a big outlay for him since they have a bunch of other bigs.
