Despite playing just 17 games with the Spurs following a mid-season three-team trade, De’Aaron Fox is already thinking long-term, according to Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle.
Starting August 3, Fox will be eligible for a four-year extension worth up to a projected $229MM, and according to Lerner, he is looking forward to signing that offer if San Antonio puts it on the table. Asked if he was optimistic about reaching terms with the Spurs, he said, “I would definitely hope so.”
Fox, who currently has one year and $37MM left on his contract, looks to be an integral part of the Spurs’ outlook as they continue to search the market for impact players to add to the core anchored by Victor Wembanyama.
Armed with the second and 14th picks in the 2025 draft, as well as several young veterans like Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Jeremy Sochan on deals that could be valuable on their own or as salary-matching pieces in larger trades, the team has a wide range of options to consider this summer.
There are concerns with how Fox, reigning rookie of the year Stephon Castle, and projected No. 2 pick Dylan Harper will coexist as three guards with shaky jump shots and – in the case of Fox and Harper particularly – a skill set best suited to having the ball in their hands, but it’s unlikely that Fox would be the odd man out after the former All-Star pushed for a trade to the Spurs last season.
In his 17 games for San Antonio last season, Fox averaged 19.7 points, 6.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 27.4% from three. While the scoring and shooting numbers would rank as some of the lowest of his career, he was both adjusting to just the second NBA team of his career and also dealing with tendon damage in the pinkie of his shooting hand, an injury that eventually sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
“I’m doing well. The surgery went fine,” Fox said when asked about the injury. “I’ve been cleared so I played a little five-on-five and I’ve done contact stuff, so I’ll be ready for next year.”
More spurs moves must be incoming unless something weird is up with Wemby…
Fox isn’t worth the max. Will he sign a 3yr $100M extension ? That would be fair
First part is your opinion – which is fine. Second part is simply wrong. He will get the $225
Agreed, he’s going to get the max. Worse players have received the max, and the Spurs didn’t trade for him just to lowball and let him walk at the end of next season.
I’m not high on Fox either, but he will get the max.
I would not give Fox extension
Trade idea
Bucks get Fox, Sochan, Branham and Hawks 2027 unprotected first round pick
Spurs get Giannis
Spurs have never been in the business of burning a player. They won’t start with fox.
Besides Kawhi Leonard?
No he burned the spurs in return the spurs traded him away from where he really wanted to go
The most games kawhi has ever played in one season was with the spurs. Maybe he should of listened to them and not uncle Dennis the mennace.
In the early days they were. Gervin etc etc
Can you help me with the Gervin reference. Played with the Spurs from 1973 to 1985 and spent one season in Chicago. All of this before the current Spurs regime and today he is beloved figure at Spurs games and remains active in the community. So, what are you talking about?
Bucks aren’t trading Giannis for Fox and some scraps
Perhaps but the Spurs don’t want him either unless the Bucks gave him away – which they won’t
There will be no Giannis to San Antonio trade. Move on
Fox is not close to being worth that much
Offer Fox for a pick
Extremely overated
The Spurs are a frugal franchise, they won’t pay Fox that much money.
They will. Fox, under his agent Rich Paul, pushed for a move to SA on the condition that he gets a max there. That’s one of the reasons SA got him cheap.
They would not have made the trade if they did not intend to keep him. They think he’s a great compliment to Wemby and Castle. Harper complicates the rotation some but better to trade later from strength.
They did not know they were getting the #2 pick in the draft when they made the trade though.
Fox is going to be the odd man out, there’s almost no reason for the Spurs to keep him. His 1 year $37M left almost matches Moses Moody’s 3 year $39M deal. GSW should make that trade, then trade Jimmy for KD. Offense issues = over. Title = incoming.
Lol 1-37 and 3-39 is not how contracts “match”.
Also, GSW traded for Jimmy after KD turned down a reunion in the 1st place.
In his head, it is a match. We will never understand how his brain works or how he even spews out such bad takes.
Congrats on making Davey’s mute list.
Anyone who goes against what he says are on his mute list. The only ones not yet there are his other accounts.
1. I said “almost match” meaning other parts can easily be added. Catch up, young buck
2. KD turned down all trades, as he did not want to be traded midseason, but it is now offseason, when trades can happen, so there goes your point down the drain!!
L reply guy post. Be better next time. Perhaps learn to read and comprehend better? Those 4 idiots who liked your poorly thought out post also gotta be better.
Trades don’t work like that.
Plus KD for Butler straight up is laughable but I completely agree with the Fox part
Its nowhere close to an almost match. Stop forcing your failed math to people. You dont know ball, the NBA CBA or math lilbro.
Lol, broooo. Trades are balanced off next year’s salary, not total contract. Moody’s $11.57m in 2025-26 only match 31% of Fox’s $37m. Just a tad off “almost”. Calling my post poorly thought out doesn’t make you right, it makes you look like a bigger fool.
Nope, you are wrong in this case. The length of a player’s contract (3 years vs. 1 year) does not directly affect the salary matching rules, which are based on the player’s current season’s salary. However, a longer contract for an acquired player might have implications for a team’s future salary cap and financial flexibility
Are you trolling or dense?
The length of a player’s contract does not affect salary matching rules (sentence break).
Matching rules are based on the player’s current season’s salary (2025-26).
A longer contract will impact a team’s future total cap (2026-28), i.e. less room to sign another FA outright.
You’re convoluting trade matching (CV) with total cash obligations (FV).
He will not be. They will open the season with all three and try to find 30/35 minutes for each of them. So basically 2 of them will be on the floor most of the time and rarely all three. Then they’ll figure out the rest of the mix.
Everyone has to remember – the Spurs are nothing if not parient and they have no expectations of competing for a championship this year, so they will see what develops.
I just don’t see Fox matching the timeline here. They also don’t really need a high scoring PG with Wemby there. The PG should be feeding him lobs all game.
Fox doesn’t match the timeline. Glad you saw I wrote that
Trade Fox for a pick
@ Davey bahahahaha hahahahaha lol. Fox is garbage. May as well trade him to my team, the mighty warriors for a washing washing and a mascot. Of course, Fox should sign the MLE in San Fran, thus leaving flexibility to add Giannis next off season. You are funny.
Davey J still insisting that a Fox and Moody 1on1 trade works is hilarious. The lottle boi obviously has issues in the head, specifically with math.
@ TallB
The only thing dumber is wishfully thinking the Spurs would prefer Moody to Fox for any conceivable reason.
His near daily posting of the Butler for KD fantasy is almost equally funny.
Watch him post that same “best” trade on the next Suns or Warriors news thread. Youll see it as well on a Bucks thread as his brain thinks Curry, KD and Giannis are all forming the next superteam.
Moody maybe is worth a second rounder thats about it.
Spurs got Fox for matching salary, an unprotected first, and maybe some other table scraps. Now they get a chance to flip him for a better return, and draft his replacement, Dylan Harper, to add next to Castle, Vassell, and that French Alien.
Or, they could keep him and pay that massive contract, and then use the No. 2 pick in a trade to get a SF/PF to add to Wemby and crew.
This is a great way to describe Fox’s situation right now.
He’s too old for the Spurs current timeline, but they could easily flip him for a younger fit. Someone like Moody or Podziemski fit way better on the Spurs.
They aren’t trading Fox for Moody or Podz.
You dont know that.
Fox doesn’t fit GS haha but okay
27% from 3 as a guard wanting that much is hilarious in today’s nba, even if the injury caused those woes he isn’t a max player. If they draft Harper then there won’t be enough minutes for those 2 and Castle to develop more. Kings might’ve won that trade if the Spurs give him max.
No one cares about single season sample sizes. You are stupid to. He is a career 33% from 3 PG, which I agree isn’t elite, but you using an injury-plagued season in this case is just how no NBA front office will react to the injury.
League average is usually around 38% from 3. Fox is a well below average 3pt shooter who will have an average shooting season from time-to-time.
Im not arguing he’s a good shooter from 3, Im arguing using an injury-plagued season where he put up his worst numbers ever isn’t smart analysis, as its too small a sample and has reason behind it.
I’m sure Fox would love to stay on the Wemby train.
Hard to say whether the Spurs will flip him to another team, given how the trade for him went (Spurs didn’t give up much) and after getting lucky with the #2 pick he might end up being a key piece if Giannis asks to be traded.
Clearly his poor 3 pt shooting is a concern for the Spurs, with castle being even worse.
It’s sad that so many fans think all that matters is 3 pt shooting %. But to set the record straight he has shot 33% for his career and as high as 37%. He shot 31% last year including 27% with the Spurs but that including a period playing with the broken finger he had surgically repaired.
Not sure where this narrative came from but he was averaging 25 ppg when traded and he brings the spurs the speed and penetration they desperately need to get more lobs to Wemby. Plus when you play with Wemby you get more open 3’s and % should go up. Sure it would be great if he was 40% from 3, but look at the list of first tier point guards that do that?
Finally, the Spurs think Harper can be a 35 to 40% three point shooter over time and Castle will continue to improve.
I know the game has changed but there’s a long list of great players that couldn’t shoot 3’s when they came in the league, Kawhi, Michael was sub 20% his first 4 years and didn’t break 30% until his 6th year and was 32% for his career, Magic, etc..
No I’m not comparing Fox or Castle to these greats just making two points 1. You can be a great player shoot 3’s in the 30’s and 2. You can improve 3 point shooting.
