Sixers forward Paul George underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his left knee Monday to treat an injury suffered during a recent workout, ESPN’s Shams Charania tweets.
George will now begin a rehab program and be reevaluated prior to start of training camp, Charania adds. The Sixers issued a statement confirming George’s surgery, which was relayed by PHLY Sports’ Kyle Neubeck (Twitter link).
Sources informed Neubeck that the surgery was an “arthroscopic cleanup” that did not involve major ligaments (Twitter link).
It’s another health-related setback for the franchise and for George, who was the Sixers’ front office’s prized signing last summer, when he inked a four-year max deal. George was supposed to be the missing link in the franchise’s championship puzzle but Philadelphia didn’t even make the playoffs after an injury-riddled season.
Knee and groin injuries limited George to just 41 games during his first season in Philadelphia. He averaged 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 43 percent from the field and 35.8 percent from long range. He had averaged at least 21.9 PPG in his previous nine seasons, including five full seasons with the Clippers.
George played 74 regular seasons games in his last season with the Clippers but he dealt with a laundry list of ailments during his time in Los Angeles. During his first four years with the Clippers, he never appeared in more than 56 games.
Holdover Justin Edwards and recent free agent acquisition Trendon Watford could play key early-season roles at power forward if George isn’t fully healthy by the season opener.
Sixers just need to stretch waive him. He’ll come back midway, get hurt again. Start now.
You are 100% right. No shot he is any type of a factor. There’s a bigger chance a random like, Euro leaguer, could step in and become a useful starter/rotation piece than there is PG13 will be a good player in the NBA again.
I have suggestions
George to miss the first 34 games of the season
Focus on playoffs
His former teammate as an example
Kawhi Leonard’s starting date for the 2024-2025 NBA season was January 4, 2025, when he made his season debut for the Los Angeles Clippers against the Atlanta Hawks. He had been sidelined due to a knee injury, missing the first 34 games of the season before his return
I’d rather they didn’t I want him off the books and away from the team as soon as possible. We don’t need his money taking up space 5 years from now.
Right. Hope Edgecomb works out and move on already.
Clearly you don’t have any fundamental understanding of how the Stretch works.
Turning George into a SEVEN YEAR CONTRACT (2x the remaining years, +1) is one of the dumbest possible things an NBA team could do.
I disagree. No justification to pay him 50m a year.
50M for three years to play
Or 21.5M for SEVEN YEARS to NOT play (That number, 15% of the cap, stays on the books the entire time)
The Bucks stretched Dame because it created the cap room to sign Turner. There’s literally no benefit to stretching George because it wouldn’t generate meaningful cap room.
You can disagree to your heart’s content, you obviously have no idea what the stretch was even designed for. I would also hate to see your credit score.
I mean, signing him to that contract to begin with is also one of the dumbest possible things an NBA team could do.
Agreed. Signing George in the first place was such a stupid unnecessary thing. The 76ers were in such a perfect position and ruined it.
20M is a lot smaller portion of the cap 7 years from now… Its like in baseball where deferred money is worth way less to the team because revenue has been growing faster than inflation by a lot. It will always be a much smaller portion of your revenue or cap down the road.
10-15% of the cap being dead money for 7 years is significantly worse than front-loaded dead money.
A team also isn’t ALLOWED to have more than 15% in dead money so it would SIGNIFICANTLY hinder the team’s ability to manage the roster (including re-signing their own players), aprons, exceptions, ETC
They’d barely be able to waive anyone else for the next 7 years. But by all means, you guys should keep parroting unrealistic **** you don’t understand on the internet.
The Dame stretch was an extreme measure and there’s a reason we’d never seen it before.
20M will be below 10% of the cap by a significant margin in 7 years unless the cap raises are much smaller. This season it went up less, but the TV deal is backloaded so the national revenue will keep rising from it.
I mean its not great when your paying dead money any way you do it. I dont know whether its worse to hamper yourself more now or less but later. Like is Embiid just done? If Embiid can get somewhat back to his old self you probably need to build around him now, and start a rebuild in 4 years when his deal is done. In that case you dont care about a bit of a dead cap hit when your tanking and have flexibility with salary, but you can do more now to build a winner.
If Embiid is just done and you have him and PG as contract anchors you probably want to burn the money off as quick as possible without being in the second apron while trying to get a high draft pick.
You’re talking yourself in circles without answering the math question.
Stretching George doesn’t even get the Sixers under the cap this season.
Which means there is zero point in such a maneuver.
All I said in the first place was that money in the future becomes worth less because its equal payments that become less of the cap every season. That is true irrespective of situation. I wasnt speaking about PG specifically just that in general NBA inflation is at 10% per season over most of the next 4 years on NBA dollars.
Utah should call while the ovens hot
IF I could net that Clips 28 pick, that 29 Clips swap and the Sixers own 30 and 32 pick Id trade Lauiri for him today if Danny Jr
About the only trade I see on the board, There would perhaps be haggling on 32 pick or 31 swap from Philly but viable either way for Utah still imo
Utahs so far down the well Georges contract means nada 2 next years. IF Utah improves year 3 PG can be a nice expiring contract at the deadline for Utah to parcel (or let expire out)
If Im Philly idk, tough to say if Id do that theoretical trade if offered
Why in the world would Utah want anything to do with Paul George?
multiple 1st round picks. Like your not taking PGs contract for anything less than 2 1sts with how bad it currently looks and how long it goes for.
* Clips 28 pick
*Clips 29 swap
* Phillys 30 pick
* Phillys 32 pick
Other than that Id have zero clue John
Mute yourself
Bruh…
And they said he was better than Beal who not only isnt hurt but also averaged 17 on 50/39/80 shooting WHILE being forgotten on offense
The reality is Beal adds a lot more value to a team nowadays than Butler or PG, but the Suns are a trainwreck and used him as a scapegoat when Devin Booker had a terrible season individually.
Id push back on that beal misses games every year now as well as he was visibly not giving full effort on the suns.
You could debate the value between PG and Beal but you’d be wrong.
But Butler? LMFAO that’s a hilariously bad take. Buckets played in more games the last 3 years and played more defense.
Jimmy’s defense has fallen off tremendously, he is no longer a good defender by any means so how much does that matter? Also Jimmy is an awful shooter which is a huge downside no matter how many layups he makes.
He was good last season and in the playoffs. The GSW had the top defense in the league for his 28 games up from bottom 10 the rest of the year.
Steph was motivated after the Jimmy trade and played better and all of a sudden thats Jimmy’s credit? Lol
Offense is the best defense in a lot of ways, they improved defensively becuase they started making baskets and playing with more energy given by their heart, soul and motor, Stephen Curry
Butler plays way better than Beal. He doesnt score as much, but generates better offense for himself and others, and is a positive defender where Beal is a huge negative.
PG and Beals contracts are probably about the same bad. Beal having a NTC makes him impossible to dump with an asset to get off of, but PG runs longer so about a push.
Blow the whole damn thing up. Fire Morey. And please, Josh Harris, sell the team. Too many years of watching this trainwreck.
How is it Morey’s fault that George fell off a cliff the season after his market value was the max
Practically every other move Morey has done has been fine.
The Sixers are 225-185 (.548) since Morey took over, which includes last season’s disaster (and only 243/410 games played (.592) for Joel Embiid).
His market value was not even close to being worth what they paid him. His injuries are just icing on the cake for a player that old.
Paul George was an All-Star in 2024 & played 74 games for a playoff team
OG Anunoby got 5 years, 212 million the same offseason
LOL but keep up the revisionist history
Nothing to do with PG being 8 years older I’m sure.
Clippers only offered him 3 years…. Vì against ourselves per usual
He was old and injury prone. Sounds like a great candidate for a max deal. Morey is so overrated
He was the one above avg FA available for their cap space last summer so they sort of had to do it since they had the space the one time with Maxey having the tiny cap hold
“Paul George was an All-Star in 2024 & played 74 games for a playoff team”
It was also the first time in six years he’d played more than 56 games and he was turning 34 years old.
“OG Anunoby got 5 years, 212 million the same offseason”
George got the same amount of money for one year fewer. That contract was a disaster the second it was announced.
Paul George’s dropoff was much steeper than anticipated. He hasn’t suffered any MAJOR injuries. Contrast this to Kawhi and KD who are OLDER with more significant injuries and are still going strong – or DeMar DeRozan and Jimmy Butler who are likewise older.
Right now George is as bad as he was expected to be in year 3 or 4 of the contract, not year 1.
This is not on Daryl Morey. This is on Paul George.
Not being focused on basketball. Not being able to adapt.
He’s not saying that is Morey’s fault.
Daryl Morey has done nothing but star chase and it hasn’t gotten this team out of the 2nd round.
Nobody in Philly wanted George here for the contract they gave him. And then he gave a cooked and crippled Joel Embiid a huge extension. This team is F’d for years to come
Another fake sixers fan.
How was his value at the max? He missed 147 games over the previous 5 seasons before signing in Philly. The trend was obvious to the whole world. There was a reason the Clippers let him walk. The Clippers made the right choice(sounds weird to say lol)
Don’t let facts get in the way of nonsense that is supposed to be a well thought out comment. These sixers haters fear a healthy sixers team and revel in every injury. All will be healthy by training camp.
And all will be a disaster by mid season. Though I do wish Embiid good health.
Extending Embid and signing George will set this team back years. He knew they were both old, past their prime and not physically sound.
Then just to compound it he just resigned octogenarians Lowry and Gordon.
George has been injured a lot over his career. And he’s 35 years old. Risk was high.
Morey gambled and he lost.
Theres a hilarious episode of Nate Silvers Risky Business podcast that was just before pre season last year where Morey is talking through the logic of the injury risks of PG and his reasoning behind building the team. Lets just say Moreys thought process didnt age well at all.
Says the GM of his own fantasy NBA neighborhood 3 and under league.
K. That makes no sense. Smoke less crack before posting…
And so it starts
3 weeks ago rumors
Jazz Trade:
The 76ers may have discussed trading George to the Utah Jazz, potentially swapping the #3 pick for the Jazz’s #5 pick and taking on George’s contract
Nets Trade:
76ers may have discussed a trade where the 76ers send George and the #3 pick to the Brooklyn Nets for young Nets players and a collection of first-round picks.
Neither the Jazz nor the Nets are dumb enough to give up assets for PGknee
Ahhhhh yes they certainly are.
Agreed. The Nets and the Jazz don’t want anything to do with all these over the hill overpaid players.
FFS…. already? They’re gonna cut off VJ’s thumb, now Placebo is hurt. Next they’ll tell us Joel Embiid got lost in the Bermuda Triangle, but his salary will still count toward the cap.
You know statistically the Bermuda Triangle doesnt have any higher rates of plane and boat losses than any other high traffic body of water. It was created as an urban legend by a newspaper article that sights a bunch of things that never happened as the evidence of the Triangle. I want to say it started in the 50s.
Take that Philly off your name, you soil it.
But he looked all fine and healthy during his recent podcast
lol
Podcast P is hellbent on never playing and actually earning his money.
Ben Simmons set a precedent in Philly.
Preseason P lol
Pre-season P ……… that’s a good one to add to the list.
Podcast P, Pinky P, Playoff P
Paul George getting a head start on being Paul George.
So it begins…..George is hurt, Embid is still not doing any work on a court and somehow Morey is still employed.
So shady…
Pingpong balls await. Or that dude just walks out with an envelope saying this is legit, promise. Top 5 pick Philly.
They don’t own their own pick… 1-4 protected.. Thunder could get pick 5
Ouch, just keeps getting better.
Trust the Process
Is Ben Simmons still available?
The two most overrated players in the NBA right now are Paul George and Bradley Beal.
Most players get injured while training to get ready to play so they won’t get injured.
Regardless of what happens with PG, if Embiid can play, they will win many games and will be in the playoffs, maybe even as high as top-4. But if he doesn’t, which is a lot more likely, they can be in the play-in or even lower.
PG’s availability and form are rather inconsequential to where they land this season.
Top 4? They’re not better than the Cavs, Knicks, hawks, or Magic. They’re probably not better than the Bucks or Pistons either.
Philly win games when Embiid is in-form and plays. As much as he’s hated and criticized for making passive-aggressive comments, for not being available, for being ‘soft’, for ‘flopping’, for getting the whistle, for changing his mind 3 times about what nation to represent internationally, for ‘unfairly’ winning MVP over Jokic, he wins games when he’s out there. 24-25 was a write-off. In 23-24 he played 39 games and they went 31-8. In the games he didn’t play they were 16-27.
Nobody expected much from LAC last season, yet they won 50 games. Philly can do that. If Embiid plays. The thing is that nobody expects him to have good stretches of in-form performances, and for good reasons.
Podcast Knees
Time to stick a fork in Paul he’s done
Trade Edgecombe and Paul George for a PF starter, SF starter and a young C prospect(21-23).
Broome-PF, Bona-PF, Grimes-SG, Maxey-PG,
Example. Offer Edgecombe and PG to the Clippers for John Collins, Derrick Jones, Yanic Konan with picks and cash
Edgecombe is the 76ers only super young player teenager
