The Kings will waive shooting guard Terence Davis, sources tell Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link).
Davis, 28, spent most of the past two seasons in the G League. He signed with Sacramento in April and appeared in the final game of the regular season. His contract included a non-guaranteed $2,546,675 salary for the upcoming season, so the Kings won’t be on the hook for any more money after releasing him.
Davis entered the NBA with Toronto in 2019, but he had his best seasons with the Kings after they acquired him at the 2021 trade deadline. He was a valuable scorer off the bench for two and a half years before going to the G League.
He suffered a ruptured Achilles during the 2023/24 season, but was able to fully recover and averaged 14.3 points on 40.2% three-point shooting for the Wisconsin Herd last year.
Once the move becomes official, Sacramento will be down to 14 standard contracts, including Keon Ellis, whose $2.3MM deal is also non-guaranteed. The Kings currently have all three of their two-way slots filled, but no other players are on the offseason roster.
Sacramento has been rumored to have interest in trading for Jonathan Kuminga or signing Russell Westbrook, and parting with Davis provides more roster flexibility for those moves to occur.
Dario Saric’s trade aggregation restrictions lift on Sept 13th, and he’s a negative value contract but a familiar fit in Golden State.
I could see GS settling for Devon Carter and Saric in a Kuminga sign and trade if the Kings attach an unprotected first.
Kings would then have an opening to sign Westbrook for that 15th roster spot.
Kuminga’s base compensation outgoing salary (50%) would be less than half of Carter/Saric combined, which would allow the Dubs to be a 2nd apron team. That extra $13M in spending power will be crucial to their success this year.
Horford would then get taxpayer MLE with second year player option, GP2 gets 1 year at ~$5-7M and a non-guaranteed 2nd year but waives his right to veto a trade, and Melton and Seth Curry get minimums to fill out the roster at 15.
The two draft picks sign two-way deals and eventually get added to the roster after the trade deadline if the team is able to make a big swing trading 3-4 players and draft picks for Markannen or LeBron.
Unprotected first is a ridiculous ask for a guy gs doesn’t want to commit to, at all
Kings might be making a move to make room for a trade that sends two players back for one of the Kings.
