Although Dallas’ front office is open to listening to offers on Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, Daniel Gafford and D’Angelo Russell, the Mavericks aren’t “aggressively shopping” any of those four veterans, sources tell Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.com.
As Afseth details, rival teams have gotten the impression that the Mavericks are currently evaluating not only their play to this point in the season but also their options on the trade market. They’re viewed as being “opportunistic” instead of a seller, Afseth writes, and whatever moves Dallas makes will be geared toward improving the team’s “long-term outlook.”
According to Afseth, the Mavs want to see Kyrie Irving play alongside Cooper Flagg and believe the star guard can complement the rookie forward and assist in Flagg’s development. Irving’s name is notably not among the aforementioned group.
While the Pistons, Hawks and Raptors are reportedly expected to among the suitors for Davis, sources who spoke to Afseth expressed skepticism about Davis’ fit in Detroit and Atlanta, with Toronto viewed as the best on-court landing spot of the group. Still, as Marc Stein recently reported and Afseth confirms, a Davis trade shouldn’t be viewed as an inevitability.
“The Mavericks are going to want to see how this team looks with AD and Kyrie,” one source told Afseth. “There is no sense in trying to just get rid of AD. The market has to be where they want to make a deal. If there isn’t a good enough deal on the table, I don’t see a deal getting done. They’d get another look at the trade market or evaluate an extension in the summer.”
Here are a few more highlights from Afseth’s rumor round-up:
- While Thompson’s on-court contributions have been up and down during his time in Dallas, he has remained a “positive” presence despite the organizational turmoil following the Luka Doncic trade, Afseth reports. If Dallas does end up having serious discussions about Thompson, the team is expected to be “considerate” of Thompson’s desire to play for a contender, Afseth adds.
- The future of Giannis Antetokounmpo is the biggest storyline on the trade market, but Afseth hears there haven’t been any new developments on that front. Some rival executives still view the Knicks as the favorites to land Antetokounmpo if he’s made available, but the Heat and Spurs are among the other potential suitors for the two-time MVP.
- Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant, who returned from a 10-game absence on Friday, is not currently available on the trade market, per Afseth. Should that change, the Heat are not viewed as being a strong fit for the two-time All-Star, Afseth continues.
- The Rockets, Timberwolves and Kings are among the teams keeping an eye on point guards ahead of the February 5 deadline, according to Afseth.
- The Pacers have done background work on Jazz center Walker Kessler, according to Afseth, who says Tyrese Haliburton is a fan of the fourth-year big man. Kessler, who is out for the year following shoulder surgery, was seeking $120MM+ on a long-term rookie scale extension before the season began, Afseth reports. Kessler will be a restricted free agent next offseason.

Dallas is clueless
They were clueless under Harrison, clearly. We will see if they are at all improved now that he is gone.
If there are only bad deals out there, then holding onto AD until the offseason is a reasonable approach. We have seen that strategy work in the past. We have also seen it not work…time will tell.
I would honestly keep the old veterans so maybe the team can compete for a title. Have them all in the starting lineup with Klay coming out if not hot. Get a young core Flagg’s age and gut out the middle.
Sacramento get. PJ Washington, D Russel, Caleb Martin
Dallas get. Noa Essengue, Demar DeRozan, Dennis Schröder, Nikola Vučević, T Flowers
Chicago get. Gafford, Exum, Eubanks, Cash from Dallas, two 2nds from Dallas, two 2nds from Kings
Who says no? Helps everyone
Promote Nembhard and Cisse.
PG. Irving (Dennis now)
SG. Thompson (sub out fast if not hot)
SF. DeRozan
PF. Davis
C . Vučević
Flagg sixth man to finish the season
Chicago get Caleb Martin
Kings get Patrick Williams as well in the deal*
The Heat are a great fit for Morant. The city of Miami isnt.
What can Dallas get in a DeAngelo Russell trade…
1 NEW ball rack and two used ones?
One and one??
Dallas has to give up at least a second and a couple of new ball tacks to get rid of Russell.
Usually yes, but I think his salary is very low this year. Five or 6 million or so. That’ll be easy to trade for his decent production.
With Lively out for season. Mavs can’t move Gafford now. So unless they want to move PJ. They really don’t have a move to make. You play the season out. Then next yr you come back with Kyrie. And you can move Gafford at the draft.
Or will they blow it up and move AD now. I would wait till next year.
Si Irving regresa bien no necesitan hacer cambios
Bastante puede pasar. Esperando a Kyrie. Quien sabe con los GMs de los Mavs. Para mi yo espero a su regreso. Para que juegue con Cooper y AD.
Nice win for the Wolves tonight. Was interesting seeing them beat the Warriors with Curry, when they didn’t have Ant, after being constantly told how the Warriors would have swept the Wolves, if only a man in his late 30’s didn’t get hurt.
Giannis can’t come soon enough lol ……..
13-13 with the Mavs lurking …..
Yes, that’s a valid point. The warriors didn’t have Greymond or Horford. Two starters down.
But you think that if you’re down a starter or a star player that the bench would pick up the slack on a great team.
Minnesota did that tonight without their star. They’re legitimate contenders as are the top six in the west. The Warriors are a play in team and I think that’s obvious.
Can’t wait to see what the trade deadline results in for my Warriors. Should be interesting.
It’s still early days but yeah, looking like a move will have to be made if they’re going to be a legitimate threat.
You lost to their bigs. Randle, Gobber, Naz combined for 89 points. It’s crazy how bad your interior defense is.
What’s crazy is Kerr not playing his 2 biggest players together at the same time, and refusing to play one of their best rebonders(kuminga) at all.
Giving up a 39 pt 4th Q playing 3 guard lineups vs Gobert, Reid, and Randle as the Wolves shot 70%/60%/80% and outrebounded GSW 13-5 happened.
Terrible coaching.
“Hey coach, I’m hurt, I can’t go tonight.”
Coach: “ok.”
NBAisOK: “terrible coaching.”
1st, my initial point was that Kerr played either TJD or Post, rather than both together.
2nd, why would you think JK told Kerr he couldn’t play? Considering how well he played against the Wolves in the playoffs, I bet he was hoping Kerr would play him.
You’re right I apologize.
I think I still had in mind the other guy talking about the two Warriors big men out for the game.
So that was my mindset in reading your comment as well.
But that was not your point at all. It was about the two guys who were available plus Kuminga.
My apologies. Thank you for your grace in your response.
V the interior defense LAST NIGHT.
You have to remember what I just wrote.
Their starting center and their starting power forward didn’t play so the defense inside will be horrendous in those cases for any team.
So it’s not how bad the interior defense “is.”
It’s how bad the interior defense “was last night.”
In fact, another pushback might be that there was an article yesterday or the day before on this website that said for the season so far, the Warriors were third in the league in defense.
Overall D is good. Not their interior. Plus like you said they were missing two bigs. Podz and Buddy again don’t score. Inconsistent this year so far. Gotta show up when team needs you most.
@Gary
“Their starting center and their starting power forward didn’t play”
Who do you think are “Their starting center and their starting power forward”? Please be specific.
Golden State Warriors Starting center, Al Horford.
Golden State Warriors starting power forward, Greymond.
Why didn’t Kuminga play. Is he still hurt. I don’t get it …….. who destroyed the Kuminga bandwagon.
All this talk about Warriors defense. And they give up 127 points to TWolves with no AE ……
Forget these Rumors is it true the Knicks are considering bringing back Donte? What would it take do the Wolves want Yabu?? That’s exciting if that happens
He didn’t play because Kerr doesn’t like him. He just goes with the “everyone get the ball to steph” with 2 other guards, Butler, and 1 big offense.
The talk about the defense was fueled by playing struggling teams without Steph…
Or maybe, Kerr doesn’t play Kuminga because JK is unreliable. Why is so difficult for you to see that?
I see it all. When you are down two rotation guys. You play the best you got. Buddy and Podz didn’t do anything. So how can he hurt you in 10 mins. He plays well you give him 20. All he is doing is making sure he has no trade value.
As if Podz and Hield ARE “reliable”?
Kuminga leads the players who have started multiple games in rpg, and clearly that lack of rebounding was the biggest problem in this loss, especially in the 4th Q.
Mavs need to build around cooper and plan for the long term future instead of media and fan driven narratives about the Luka trade which is in the past.
Best thing you could do now is move off AD get back someone young and start getting back to just winning games.
Paul George and Jared McCain for Anthony Davis and 2 seconds.
Then Daniel Gafford for Benedict Mathurin and Tony Bradley.
Finally Kyrie Irving for Fred Van Vleet, Clint Capela, a first round pick and 2 seconds.
Dallas starts over fresh and looks something like this:
Dallas all of a sudden has a young core of Cooper Flag, Jared McCain, Benedict Mathurin, Derick Lively, Max Christie and Jaden Hardy. All guys 23 and under with plenty of potential. You’ve even got a couple good vets with Klay, PG and FVV. Still have some trade-able role players like Naji, PJ, Martin and Capela.
I’m sure the sixers are just falling over themselves to make that trade. Having both their starting C and PF perpetually in street clothes will bring them right into contention…
Honestly as a Sixers fan myself I wouldnt mind if we went after AD. Give up either PG or Embiid both are just as injury prone if not more than him. AD has more in the tank than Embiid whose knees are shot. AD at least plays defence still and doesn’t just foul bait and take away from the young guys.
Say it cost us PG like I have mocked we would have AD and Embiid as our 4 and 5 which if healthy would be a tough match up. Out East, Knicks couldn’t stop them, Pistons would struggle, only really the Cavs could match up with them.
Plus we’d still have Maxey VJ Grimes and Oubre to run 1-3 with 1 of them off the bench.
Ideally it would be Embiid for AD and in that case I’d like AD as the 5 and Drummond capable of playing 5 minutes and AD at the 4 in double big lines.
