When the Bucks briefly explored the possibility of a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade over the summer, the Knicks were the only team they spoke to, with the star forward having reportedly expressed some interest in the idea of playing in New York.
Given Antetokounmpo’s apparent affinity for the Big Apple, the Nets have long believed they could have a real shot at winning the Giannis sweepstakes if he ever ends up on the trade block, writes Jake Fischer of The Stein Line (Substack link). However, according to Fischer, while the Knicks continue to be viewed as a credible threat to land the two-time MVP, Brooklyn is no longer being described in the same terms.
As Fischer explains, the Nets are prioritizing a high pick in the 2026 draft in the hopes of landing a young franchise player to build around, and don’t have the sort of championship-caliber roster that Antetokounmpo would be seeking in the event that he requests a trade.
The Knicks, conversely, have a roster better equipped to contend with Giannis, but may lack the assets to sell Milwaukee on a deal. For what it’s worth, Fischer hears from multiple sources that Antetokounmpo told at least one Bucks teammate during the offseason that he thought a deal with the Knicks was close to happening, though multiple reports have indicated that the two teams didn’t gain real traction in their discussions.
Here’s more from Fischer:
- The Hawks could make a compelling offer for Antetokounmpo by offering the 2026 first-round pick they acquired from New Orleans back in June. If the Bucks were to acquire that pick, they’d control both their own and the Pelicans’ first-rounders in the upcoming draft. Fischer says he has been repeatedly – and “quite strongly” – told since the start of the season that Atlanta won’t trade that “most favorable” first-rounder, which could end up with the best odds to be No. 1 overall, but he believes the Hawks’ front office would have to at least consider the idea if it meant adding a superstar like Giannis.
- The Spurs have talked to Antetokounmpo’s U.S.-based agent Alex Saratsis multiple times over the years about the possibility of joining their front office, sources tell Fischer. Despite that link between the two parties, Fischer says there’s no guarantee San Antonio would be a major player in the Giannis sweepstakes if he seeks a deal, noting that the Spurs have thus far been unwilling to consider moving either Dylan Harper or Stephon Castle, even for Antetokounmpo.
- During past trade discussions for other players, the Warriors have “never been close” to putting both Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski in the same package, Fischer writes. They also have never seriously entertained any scenario in which they trade Draymond Green. However, Fischer thinks the club would be open to reconsidering both of those possibilities if Antetokounmpo is on the table.

Prediction: Milwaukee uses their 2031 FRP in an ill-fated trade, Giannis stays and signs a ginormous extension.
Size of Giannis’ extension is already determined lol. I think his bigger issue is with the stretching of Dame’s money. Hard to make a competitive roster with that on the books, and it’s not going away anytime soon.
Why would the Warriors make Kuminga and Pods untouchable together? Neither one is all that.
Both are looking more like 6th man on a playoff team.
They wouldn’t put both guys in the same package together because on paper they are 2 young guys on a team full of old guys and wouldn’t want to divest all their youth in one trade bringing back a veteran.
Yes, TJ D is Young but that’s about it. Moses Moody sucks as we saw last night, and Quentin post is developing, but not all the way there yet.
Absolutely on target. An old-ish team isn’t about to give up two youngsters in a trade like this.
“in a trade like this”. The article said they didn’t want to move Kuminga and Pods together in any trade. That’s ridiculous if true.
The media will keep pushing the Giannis to warriors for click bait articles but there is no way Giannis wants to come to GSW. Why would he want to be on a 500 team? He has a better chance on Bucks.
I’ve never heard the media push Giannis to the Warriors. Where have you heard that other than from ill informed commenters on this website?
If you read the article above and the quote from the reporter speaking of combining the two young guys in a trade, I think that’s speaking overall In any trade to any team.
Everyone on the planet knows they would give up Kuminga and Podski in a trade for Giannis no doubt.., IF that was ever discussed.
No no it’s in reference to any trade to any team for “other players” not a Bucks trade for Giannis.l
ESPN article was claiming GSW was in teh running for Giannis. Other click bait articles are out there claiming it too. Kuminga is gone once he hits trade day. Unfortunately GSW will not get much for him maybe a young player or a late 1st round pick.
Yes, that’s right and I probably am not stating it correctly.
There’s a lot of teams “in the running,” but I don’t see anyone “pushing Giannis to the Warriors.”
As you say, it can’t/won’t happen anyway. Impossible.
Both warriors and Lakers have a big fan base so there is a lot of articles claiming insider news to get clicks. Is why teh warriors are on national TV a lot is because they bring viewers.
Don’t pay attention to any ESPN crap…they are the CNN of sports
@arc89
Not sure why you think that makes sense, considering that the Bucks are an even worse under .500 at 10-13
Giannis wants to be on a top team. Even with Giannis the warriors would not be a top team. Look at how much they would need to give up to just get him.
Brandin Podziemski sucks, Moses Moody is 10x the player he is. Moody plays defense, Gary. YDKB.
For the longest time, I thought Podz should be off limits in a Giannis deal because he’s young, inexpensive, and is needed for ball-handling and facilitating – especially if Draymond is to be part of the outgoing package. I’m wondering now though if Dubs’ brass is viewing him as an expendable in light of Spencer’s emergence and Cryer’s potential/promotion.

@Gary
It was Moody’s best game in the last 8. But Podz was beyond bad.
Did you watch the game? Moody would go to the hole and this was several times, and either lost it out of bounds or did a pump fake and still got his shot blocked etc.
You’re looking at his stats, which of course are important part of production but wow, he can’t guard his shadow.
Greymond has to constantly go over and help defend his man on the blow by drive.
Moody went 5-10 Gary. You can knock this nonsense off now. Time for bed.
Yes, I watched the game. There wasn’t a lot of defense played by either team.
Sad that the Warriors lost because they couldn’t perform a basic inbounds play and then didn’t box out on the final shot.
Podski is not shooting the ball very well so far this season. Sure hope that gets straightened out in a big way.
Podski is not doing anything well at all this season. He deserves only 2 routes: the G League, or another team. Period. We do not need White Westbrook, we need Moses Moody shooting 5-10, like he did last night, and playing great defense, like he has done all season long.
Podski is weighing the team down. We can blame almost all our losses on Podz and Podz alone this season. He should have never been leading the team in minutes played, he isn’t our best player or highly paid. People pay to watch stars, not rookies.
In reality, Moody’s defense in below average, and ofc as the season continues, 5-10 shooting games have been rare (in the 7 games prior since his career high game against the Pelicans missing starters, he shot 21-66 (31.8%) and was even worse from three at 11-44 (25%).
It’s Dec 6. “in reality” the season is a baby, yawn….
prediction: you will wake up alone….hugging your pillow
Stop listening to the noise out there. The Bucks don’t control their picks. They have no assets to trade. There is no way possible to upgrade this team. Unless the NBA steps in and helps them. Like they did the Lakers with Luka and Ayton. Bucks only have one move to upgrade this team.
That’s a Giannis trade. Giannis will never get to another East Final. If he stays in Milwaukee. A trade is best case scenario for both the Bucks and Giannis. And Giannis isn’t going to just any team. He will go to a team that is ready to contend with him for next 5-8 years. Only a few teams can offer that.
Imo the Spurs are the top team on the list. They should have done it at the draft.
It all depends on what the Bucks owner wants to do with their team. They should trade Giannis and rebuild the team into a championship team. Its not going to be just a 2 team trade could be 3 or 4 teams involved in the trade with many parts moving. The Spurs should get involved in bring Giannis to SA. They have the assets to make a big trade
GA engineering a move out of MIL will tarnish his stellar reputation imo… and what, he’ll pout if he doesn’t get to a team with stars around him so that he can win? Not a good look.
He’s not even healthy so this is all moot.
i thought the pick owned by the Hawks, not the top-3 one but the other one, was a choice between either the Bucks or Cavs pick, whichever is better?
One of the Hawks’ first-rounders is the most favorable between the Bucks and Pelicans picks.
The other one is pretty convoluted (essentially a “most favorable” of two “least favorable” picks), but doesn’t involve the Bucks’ pick at all. It could be the Hawks’ own pick, the Cavs’ pick, the Timberwolves’ pick, or (least likely but still possible) the Jazz’s pick.
That’s too convoluted by two orders of magnitude. League needs to put some sort of cap on pick shenanigans.
oh the Warriors would “consider” that… very nice of them.
Spurs don’t have to give up Castle. But Harper definitely would have to be in play. ….. I’m Bucjs I ask for both lols……..
Giannis and Thanasis ——— to Spurs
Harper, Castle, Barnes, Sochan, two #1 picks…..
Media drivel at the highest levels.
Whatever reservations GSW might generally have as to trading these 2 young players in one deal, I can guarantee it wouldn’t apply to including both in a potential GA trade. This, even if the Moms’ of the two players were the team’s TP and GM. Fortunately for the Moms if they get those jobs, the two guys, together, wouldn’t even constitute a down payment on a GA trade price. GSW’s FRPs also wouldn’t have much value until about 2029-30 at the earliest.
When did SAS discuss a trade for GA in which discussions they indicated that they were unwilling to include even one of Harper or Castle? I think I know. Never.
ATL generally indicating that they’re not interested in trading that “greater of” FRP doesn’t speak to whether they would include it in a GA deal. They would.
