The Warriors have been one of the NBA’s most aggressive teams in scouring the trade market to get a better sense of which players are and aren’t available, multiple sources tell Brett Siegel of Clutch Points.
Golden State is known to be in the market for an “athletic” forward as well as frontcourt help, according to Siegel, who reports that the Warriors would ideally like to add a big man who can rebound and defend the rim, since those aren’t among the strengths of current bigs like Al Horford and Quinten Post.
Although Nets center Nic Claxton has been connected to the Warriors by multiple reporters this month, Siegel says the club would probably prefer to target a player whose contract doesn’t exceed approximately $15MM annually. Siegel adds that Golden State has engaged in trade talks with the Nets, Pelicans, and Bulls, though he doesn’t specify which players those teams have discussed.
Here are a few more rumors from around the Pacific:
- According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line (Substack link), some rival executives at the G League Winter Showcase in Orlando over the weekend wondered how much more playing time Jonathan Kuminga will see before he becomes trade-eligible on January 15. Kuminga has fallen out of the rotation as of late, and it’s probably in the Warriors‘ best interest to make sure he’s healthy ahead of the trade deadline. For what it’s worth, none of the executives polled by Fischer said their opinions of Kuminga would change based on how he plays (or doesn’t) in the next few weeks.
- Unless a third team gets involved, a deal sending Kuminga to the Kings looks like a long shot, per Siegel, who says the Warriors still aren’t enamored of the assets Sacramento would offer for the fifth-year forward. That includes guard Malik Monk, who has generated very little interest around the NBA due to his contract, says Siegel. Monk, who is said to be available, is still owed nearly $42MM over two years after this season.
- CJ McCollum has been mentioned as a possible trade target for the Clippers, Siegel reports, noting that people around the league believe the Wizards guard could be had for second-round picks. McCollum’s $30.7MM cap hit could complicate a potential trade, but it’s an expiring contract and the Clippers wouldn’t have a problem matching the incoming money if their package starts with John Collins‘ $26.6MM expiring deal. They could also get there by stacking three or more contracts, including Bogdan Bogdanovic‘s, worth $16.2MM this season.
- Sources tell Fischer that the Clippers continue to dismiss the idea that veteran stars Kawhi Leonard and James Harden will land on the trade block this season. Rival teams have reportedly expressed confidence that Harden, at least, will be made available.

Huh? None of the executives opinion on Kuminga would change if the saw him playing in the next few weeks. Doesn’t sound like he has a big market. With the Warriors having a team option for next season, seems like a team seeking cap relief would be the best target.
Agree, but with so many teams trying to level out the books after Adam pushed thru his nuclear CBA in lightening fashion the expiring should be pretty attractive in the market
Most of the chunky bad expiring money has found its way to tank nation already increasing JK’s pull if GSW actually wanted to take a Big swing with draft capital + his match money
“Warriors would ideally like to add a big man who can rebound and defend the rim, since those aren’t among the strengths of current bigs like Al Horford and Quinten Post.”
The ONLY Warrior fan on this board. Who understands this statement. And doesn’t tale it as a personal insult is ……. Davey J .
Who would have thunk it 😳😳 ??
“Who would have thunk it 😳😳 ??”
Uh, anyone with a brain? My takes are the normal ones, its all my haters on here saying insane bullcrap like “Moses Moody sucks/Brandin Podziemski is great” that yall posit as being “knowing ball”.
Back to your quote Al, I would agree with this last year, but Post is getting better defensively by the game, thanks to the best mentor and active on-court defacto “coach”, Jimmy Butler III. Post is really blowing my mind with how good and active defensively he has been in the last month. We all heard Butler was taking all the youngsters under his wing, and they are listening to him. Draymond is too scary/violent/unhinged for rookies to take seriously, Jimmy has literally replaced ALL of Draymond’s roles, while Draymond is still on the team.
Did you notice that Dunleavy put a restriction on the incoming salary, $15 million. That would be the most that they have paid for a big man since they were forced to trade Bogut and Barnes, and renounce the rights to Ezeli, to accommodate Durant. Everyone else has been on minimum or rookie deals. That pesky CBA. Obviously, they won’t find a starter for that amount.
We’ll see how aggressive/serious the Dubs are about adding a big by whether or not they’ll be willing to part with their FRP.
Malik Monk is owed three yrs and 60 million. Unless he starts for that team. No team is trading for him.
Sabonis, DeM DeR, Westbrook >>>>
To Cleveland Cavaliers ….
Allen, Garland, Ball, two 2nd rd picks >>>>
to Sacramento Kings ….
Works for both teams
Horford hasn’t played enough for anyone to see what he does well. He’s 39 so I don’t blame him but at this rate we should have just kept Looney
Considering one of the teams the Warriors were talking to is the Pelicans and Looney is their 4th string centre at the moment, you may get your wish.
Looney has fallen of a cliff too
The Clippers want McCullum? How many players past their prime are they going to field?
Kuminga must be so fired up, Jan 15th is just couple weeks away…. Not a bad pay this yr and trade kicker…. Still, it’s all what could have been. Just in 2024 a guarantee offer for FIVE yrs for prolly $140-150m.
1. If he accepted that offer, would he be a better player today?? Would he be used differntly?
2. Kuminga and his agent wanted $35-40m+ and they were greedy but it was also an indication of how unhappy Kuminga was.
3. Why did Warriors offer change so drastically within a year? We can argue tax apron, used money for Butler, etc. But it was also punitive for not accepting the offer.
4. So WHY?? Why did Warriors make that offer? It wasnt just that Lacon liked Kuminga. They had, I think, every intention to use that contract to get a big name player. It was obvious that Curry and Dray demanded a big time beteran like Paul George etc.
At the ns of the day, Kuminga’s agent played terrible chess and didnt have a good insight. Kuminga missed out on a well deserved payout and he will be lucky to ever recoup that money. He needs to work hard again and have a hungry mind of 2nd round pick, or else he can end up like Wiseman.
I have been saying 2-3 yrs ago, Warriors are nothing but pretenders and have no future whatsoever. Yes, I was super excited with Butler trade and I was wrong about Curry’s decline(he’s amazing!) but it doesnt change we are pretenders and wont win another title for many many yrs to come. :(
If GSW has a healthy Curry and are in the 1st round of the playoffs, they are always a big chance to go all the way, because of Curry greatness and the way he gets some teams so mentally shook from his greatness.
Before his injury, Curry + Playoffs Jimmy beat the 2nd seed and were about to trounce the Wolves and then likely topple OKC as well, who always seemed to shrink when challenged by veterans last year, which makes sense, as they are the softest team of all time who have the refs in their pocket. Real title winners do things like beat Lebron James. Weak and soft ones get pushed to 7 by the Pacers even when the refs are openly trying to help the Thunder win.
Michol, are you a fan of the Golden State franchise, or a fan or the individual players? Would you rather see the end of Steph’s career with GSW be in the play-in, non-threatening for a championship until he retires, collecting and building upon whatever shooting records he’s approaching or already achieved… OR… would you rather the Warriors trade Curry before his value also tanks like the current roster surrounding him (Post excluded) and accelerate the next build of a championship contender?
The Warriors are not the team I root for, so I do not possess the emotional attachments to the championships and players involved with them. I almost never comment on my team because I know my opinions are biased. It’s easy for me to say trade Curry for a kings ransom because you’ll be closer to your next championship than you currently are. As it stands right now, the Curry years have to expire before a rebuild can begin in earnest.
Curry is 37 years old. The ability to extract value from him is dwindling every trip up and down the court. Perhaps the twilight years won’t last very long. Perhaps he has a major injury and GSW draft picks are instantly worth a premium. One thing to me is absolutely sure, if you’re one more ankle injury away from an early lottery pick, you can’t attach picks into trades to have one last hurrah with Curry.
So what’s preferable to you?
Giannis is 31 for perspective. I’d say it’s more likely Curry is traded to Milwaukee than Giannis to Golden State solely based on their ages and draft pick ownership. Not that I think either trade is even remotely possible.
It’s a heresy among fans here, but i wanted a complete rebuild 2 yrs ago including trading Curry. 2 timelines dont work, didnt work, and rebuild simply wouldnt work with Curry on the team. It would be painful to trade Curry but it would be twice as painful to see Warriors just be pretenders for years to come. I would love to see Thunders like rebuild. LBJ left Cavs, Lilliard Blazers, Westbrick and KD Thunders, MJ Bulls… so why not? I would also like to see Curry win couple more titles anywhere.
That being said, I still cant forgive Bill Walsh trading away Joe Montana in favor of Steve Young. :)
And again, GSW are the #1 highest valued franchise in the NBA BECAUSE OF STEPH CURRY. He is NEVER being traded. Stop lying about this. Giannis to the #1 highest valued franchise makes a billion times more sense than Curry to the Bucks. @Druu might be the most clueless poster on this site, period.
Wizards fan here – I’d take Collins and a second rounder or two for CJ McCollum.
Agreed 👍
If you watched the Clippers vs Rockets…. You saw Lopez has plenty left. He’s an IQ big. He played 27 mins of solid 2way ball. Clippers with a big win.
You watch last night’s Kawhi. And almost makes you forget all the time he’s missed. Looked like best player on the floor man.
Rockets better be scouting PGs. Don’t mess with KDs window …….. Jrue or CJ …..
SMH you sure are a bandwagon fan jumping from 1 train to the next after 1 good game.
“Clippers with a big win”.
They are still 13 games under .500 with no hope besides to trade vets. Let’s stop this kind of crazy rhetoric. Solid win against a playoff team, but this team is not going anywhere this year.
