Bulls guard Coby White was hoping to raise his value with a strong season heading into free agency, but repeated calf issues have gotten in the way, Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun-Times writes in a subscriber-only story. They began when White strained his right calf during an August workout, sidelining him through training camp and the first 11 games of the season. He was on a minutes restriction as he made his season debut November 16, but he began feeling tightness in his left calf within two weeks and was shut down for two more games.
White felt good enough to play in a back-to-back last Friday and Saturday, but he started experiencing tightness in his right calf during Monday’s game with Minnesota. He hasn’t played since then, but he’s hoping for good news when he gets reevaluated on Monday.
“It just got tight, and it was persistent,” White said. “It started to loosen up a little bit, so I tried to test it out and get it moving again. But it was still a little persistent, so they were like, ‘Shut it down.’ I got an MRI, and it showed that it wasn’t a re-strain. The MRI actually looked better than it did in November, so it’s about just getting it to calm down. It was like a warning shot to get us to make it calm down.”
White has only been available for 16 of Chicago’s 34 games, and he admits that it’s “frustrating” to deal with constant injuries. Cowley points out that the frequent absences could not only affect White’s next contract, but the Bulls’ potential return if they decide to trade him before the February 5 deadline.
“You could sit here and say, ‘Why me?’” White said. “Then you look around the league, and there’s guys in worse situations than me in terms of they come back, (re-injure themselves) and then they’ve got to sit out even more time. You’ve got to keep a positive perspective that you’re not the only one in the world going through what you’re going through. It’s frustrating because I do want to be out there, and I don’t feel as well, like, as a person and mentally when I’m not playing. It’s hard for me to go through this. … I look at it as God is trying to teach me something through this, and maybe I’ll figure it out at the end of it.”
There’s more from Chicago:
- Josh Giddey was an active presence on the bench Friday night, constantly instructing and encouraging his teammates while sidelined with a left hamstring strain, Cowley adds in a separate story. His coaching contributions paid off as the Bulls posted a win over Orlando to improve to 2-0 without their starting backcourt. Giddey admitted that he doesn’t enjoy “sitting and watching,” but he understands the perils associated with coming back too early from a hamstring injury. “The symptoms go away, and you feel like you can do everything, and that’s when you’re at risk of restraining (the hamstring),” he said. “(I’m) just being careful, being safe, but doing what it takes to get back as soon as possible.”
- The backcourt injuries have increased the value of Tre Jones, who was acquired from San Antonio at last year’s deadline. The veteran point guard moved into the starting lineup and contributed 20 points and 12 assists in Wednesday’s win over New Orleans, per Julia Poe of The Chicago Tribune. Jones is under contract for $8MM for next season with an $8MM team option for 2027/28, so he could provide some insurance if the Bulls don’t keep White.
- In another piece, Poe examines several questions the Bulls face as they approach the deadline, noting that the team has quite a few tradable contracts that could be packaged together in a large deal. She recommends that the front office should be willing to take on other teams’ unwanted contracts to add draft assets and delay larger moves to fix the roster until the offseason.
I disagree with Poe on her buying unwated contracts around the league
Firstly- There just isnt many today and those that are have already found their way to TankNation
I do however think it is a GREAT idea to get the summer started early these next 33 days and begin plucking multi year deals from teams that need to clean up their cap sheets that have quality players – Orl Cle come straight to mind, there are others as well
This next years free agency is BAD BAD BAD …going to be hard to spend wisely with all the cap they have. I think they should be buyers but without having to use much draft capital moreso just expirings as they major facilitator
.500 again! Well that’s the goal right? LOL
So after 34 gms. You believe your team has peaked.
Bulls are young and have trade assets. Probably should wait till after Feb 4 to give up.
They also have the stupidest GM in the league; we have been very patient despite repeated bungling of opportunities.
Seriously as fans all we can do is hope for best. There is always something to root for. Like Buzelis development. You don’t want to mess that up right. Imo this TD can make a difference for Bulls.

Coby has bounced around for this coach and team for yrs. I always thought it was him. Now I know the Bulls indecisiveness and the coach’s inability to settle on a core. Has played a big role in White development.
Despite it all he has come thru to show he belongs. I always saw him as a sixth-man. Bringing energy and scoring. Last couple of yrs he has shown me he can play point. He’s a solid combo guard at this point.
Statistically having one of his best yrs. His shooting is a little down. With health and consistent time. He should be ok. Cause his career numbers say so.
Imo I think he can play with Giddey. Although defensively its a work in progress. I’m Coby I wouldn’t stay with the Bulls. I hope for a trade to a system that fits. And a coach who understands my game.
Perfect place for him is Minnesota or Phoenix. Both run a guard, wing offense. Not reliant on a a traditional PG. Coby’s strength is as a scorer shooter. His ball-handling, playmaking has improved immensely. As defined by his 5 ast. He’s a great fit with AD or Booker.
This is Coby’s scouting report before the draft ..

You are on target about his best role, and Donovan’s inability to properly utilize strengths. Phoenix would be a good place for him, but what sort of draft capital would that yield? Minny has no picks of any value to send.
With Minny I would want Beringer. If you are not going with Coby. Then moving on is a win. Beringer is a solid center prospect. Probably have to be Dillinham, salary filler, 2030 #1 pick. Be nice to get both Bringer and Dillinham. No picks then. I would ask.
Coby would benefit with a superstar around him and shooters. Houston would be a good fit for him. Obviously the return won’t be as large but maybe get one of their wing guys or send him to Sacramento to complete the Lavine/DeRozan/White trio (JK).
Unless they are major injuries to tesms that need a guy like Coby, I don’t see the return being very impactful for Coby.
Houston is a good place too. TWolves are fools if they don’t at least try to get him. They have two young talents in Dillingham and Beringer that won’t help for yrs. Coby is worth a #1 to them. Imo Coby elevates them to real contenders. Another ball-handler/scorer is what they need.
Minny’s #1 is going to be very late, probably not much better than the guys the Bulls already have – they need to get starter-level players, maybe a decent big, a 3&D guy.
Yeah I hear ya. Gotta get creative if you believe in a player. Bulls don’t seem very high on Coby. Beringer salary filler and pick can do it. #1 picks are valuable as trade chips too. Look at Maxey he went 21st.
Mike Conley (expiring deal) plus a pick is a solid deal for the TWs.
I really like Coby in Minny.
Conley expiring deal doesn’t really help the Bulls LTR, bc of Coby’s expiring contract itself. We have a lot of cap coming off the books, it’ll need to be a pick or two that will be more beneficial for us. I like Al’s proposal better. Dillingham
I don’t know if 3 months of Coby will net a young asset *and* a FRP. At this point, I think the Bulls may be lucky to get a 1st for him with that balky calf.
i think he would be a great compliment to edwards, sending him to sacramento just seems cruel
Bulls fans are hurting lol. Never make big decisions while depressed.
I think the best thing the bulls can do at the trade deadline is offer themselves up as a facilitator for any other big deals, and just make sure that in the end that results in some decent draft picks coming their way, if not this year then next or the year after that.
Conley and Clark for Coby White….
