Bennedict Mathurin is expected to miss some time for the Pacers as he works to come back from a right thumb sprain and turf toe, writes Scott Agness of the Fieldhouse Files (Twitter link).
“When we’re down numbers, it becomes more challenging, but we’ve gotten some guys back,” said coach Rick Carlisle before Sunday’s game. “But now Mathurin’s out for a while.”
Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reports (via Twitter) that Mathurin has been trying to play through the thumb sprain for multiple weeks, but that he needs some time to heal. The fourth-year guard also admitted last month that the toe injury which cost him 11 games earlier in the season was still bothering him.
Mathurin is averaging a career-high 17.8 points per game for the depleted Pacers, but his numbers have dipped since mid-December, likely due in large part to his health issues. Over his last 11 games, he’s averaging 13.5 PPG on .369/.271/.973 shooting splits.
There was no immediate timeline given for his return.
We have more from the Central Division:
- Cade Cunningham, who is playing the best basketball of his career for the East-leading Pistons, credits former NBA guard and current assistant coach Jarrett Jack for helping him take a leap as a player and leader, writes Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press. Sankofa writes that Jack was “attached” to Cunningham upon joining the staff of former head coach Monty Williams. The two do one-on-one work, pregame warmups, and talk on the bench during games together. “He’s always making jokes, always being funny, talking about he could’ve did this or I ain’t that, whatever,” Cunningham said. “It’s cool, man. He just knows how to read the room. That’s the type of stuff that allows the culture to be what it is, people like that. He’s one of the main ones that’s helped build this culture that we got.”
- There were added stakes for the Pistons as they got their first road win against the Cavaliers since coach J.B. Bickerstaff came to Detroit from Cleveland, writes Hunter Patterson of The Athletic (Twitter link). “I feel like we’ve got to have his back coming into here, because I know they get up to play against J.B. every single time,” said Isaiah Stewart, who started in the place of the injured Jalen Duren and contributed three blocks and two steals in the four-point victory. “So it was important for us to get this win tonight.” Coming into today’s game, the Cavaliers were 4-1 against their old coach.
- Micah Potter went from the G League to starting Pacers center in about a week. It’s been a whirlwind, but his previous experience with Team USA has helped him find ways to fit in and be productive, writes Dustin Dopirak of the Indy Star. “The confidence it gave me was like, I belong, right?” Potter said. “I’m not saying I’m going to be a Kevin Durant, a LeBron James, a Tyrese Haliburton, a Steph Curry. I’m not going to be those guys, but I can help those guys. I can find a role to create for those guys whether I’m scoring or not. And that was the thing that gave me the most confidence, and I also hit a couple of shots which was really cool too.” Potter’s first start came on Friday in a loss to the Spurs. He scored 16 points on 4-of-8 from three with six rebounds. In Sunday’s matchup against the Magic, he had 11 points and 10 rebounds in just over 29 minutes. “Just try to do my job as best I can,” he said. “Create for my teammates, whether that’s passing, shooting open shots, setting good screens, anything like that. Just trying to create space for my teammates and play off that.”
Kristaps Porzingis, Zacch Risacher, Mo Gueye & N’Faly Dante to Dallas for Anthony Davis
Trae Young to DC for either…
Khris Middleton, Bub Carrington, Marvin Bagley & OKC’s 2026 1st… or….
CJ McCollum, Cam Whitmore, Marvin Bagley & OKC’s 2027 1st
Dyson/Nickeil/Jalen/ADavis/Onyeka with Bub, Keaton, Vit, Luke, Middleton, Bagley & Asa off the bench. We’d also have 3 1sts in a historically strong draft & most importantly a strong defensive identity for the 1st time since Dwight was here.
DC gets their franchise pg. Trae would unlock Sarr even more than we’ve seen thus far. He fits their team sorta perfect tbh, they’re really young & would benefit more from having an elite pg like Trae than any other team. They have to give up Bub to make it happen but while Bub is settling in really well to a backup role, Wizards should be pretty excited to upgrade from Bub to Trae just by giving up the last pick of the 1st rd.
Mavs turn the page & acquire a couple of talented young forwards by downgrading from AD to KP. They also save millions of $, now & in the future, & open up a lot more flexibility going into next off-season. Zacch being the #1 pick really don’t have much if anything to do with his current struggles imo. He has to get tougher & this will be the case no matter where he ends up. I honestly would love to keep him & truly wouldn’t mind if we don’t get AD. But he’d make us much better & Dallas might wanna jump on this because Zacch does have serious potential to be a better scoring version of Batum (if/when he toughens up).
Atlanta get. Micheal Porter Jr and Nic Claxton, Issac Jones, Martin
Brooklyn get. Tobias Harris, Zaccharie Risacher, N’Faly Dante and good picks and cash from both teams
Detroit get. Porzingis and Kennard
Interesting. My only question is would that new starting lineup for ATL not need a lead ball-handler or table-setter?
JJ is currently top5 in the league in assists. A big reason for us to move Trae is because we already have so many good passers. We lead the league in assists as a team if I’m not mistaken. Dice came into the league as a pg & gives us a less dynamic/more in control Russ Westbrook vibe offensively. JJ & Dice (along w/ Nickeil) would be just fine as our lead facilitators. Bub would give us a boost off the bench & I like Keaton Wallace in a 8-12min role too.
Always thought Minnesota would be a great place for Trae Young. Play second fiddle to ANT, they have the defensive players around him like Gobert and McDaniels to cover for him. They lack a good point guard especially could do with the playmaking and shooting he provides. The only problem is it would cost them Randle, Conley and a first and those players aren’t of much use for the Hawks so you’d need a third team.
Say it was like this…
ATL: Kris Middleton, Cam Whitmore and the Wolves pick (currently 22nd)
Min: Trae Young
Was: Julius Randle and Mike Conley
Then pull the trigger on the AD deal with KP, Risacher and Kennard going to them.
Line up:
Dyson NAW Jalen AD Onyeka
Vit Whitmore Middleton Newell Gueye/Dante
Then going into the draft you do what you need to move up and grab Darryn Peterson and make him your shooting guard.
By that I mean the Kings pick currently 2nd use the Cavs pick currently 16th to move up into 1st and take him. After that you still have the Wolves pick.
You’d have a very solid defensive team, 3 really good scores/option on offence with Peterson Jalen and AD. NAW is one of the best sixth men in the league. Some very young promising players and decent depth.
TWolves
Trae ANT TSJ McDaniels Gobert
DiVan and Reid off the bench
I’d probably look to move off Dillingham and fill up with 3 and D forwards for as cheap as possible. Even a KLove retirement season at home could be cool.
And the Wizards well you’ve added Randle for next to nothing. He’d be solid next to Sarr, leaves the 3 spot open for Coulibaly/Champagnie/George, Tre Johnson has the 2 spot and Bub the 1.
Lots of FA to spend with CJ, Conley and Branham coming off the books.
I could get behind this for MN. It would be fun to see Ant paired with an elite PG and we do have the defensive personnel to cover for him on that end. My only concern is that it leaves us thin up front. We’d need to bring in another big. I’m not sure TSJ is ready for full time minutes yet.
I can dig this. Minnesota could def benefit from adding Trae. My guess is that they’d have to come up off more than just the 1 1st tho bc like you say they need to involve the 3rd team while DC could just trade with us straight up bc like I say they need Trae as bad as Min or anybody.
From the Hawks pov I would def rather get Bub instead of Cam Whitmore if I’m getting Middleton, just to balance the roster. And I’m leaning toward keeping Luke in any AD trade tbh. Mavs should rather have Mo Gueye tbh & I’d rather we keep Luke bc he’d complement AD so well. As far as the draft, if we pick anywhere in the top8, which looks very likely, we’re gonna get an extremely good young prospect. I wouldn’t trade up no matter what. & as much as I love Peterson & see him as a future HOF level guard, I’d still probably take AJ over him. Mikel Brown is my #1 target at this point, he’s my ideal pick, but if we have a chance to AJ that would be a tough choice to make bw those 2.
If Cade takes the pistons past there best ever nba record 63-19 does he have the edge in MVP talks?
Jokic is missing time currently, SGA has a title winning side and sits out a lot of 4th quarters cause his team is just that good, pistons currently have the second best record. He’s averaging 27-10-6. He will likely finish 10th in total points and 1st in total assists. As Jeff Teague said it’s basically Luka numbers plus he plays some defence and leads his team better.
As much as I like the other big names I’d love to see an underdog win it
