The Knicks like Jeremy Sochan‘s “defensive versatility, upside” and ability to handle the ball, according to Ian Begley of SNY.tv (Twitter video link). The former lottery pick will reportedly sign a veteran’s minimum deal with New York covering the remainder of the season once he clears waivers.
As Begley observes, the Knicks’ ability to sign Sochan is largely due to the fact that Guerschon Yabusele agreed to decline his $5.8MM player option for next season because he wanted an opportunity to play again. New York was able to deal Yabusele to Chicago for Dalen Terry, then flipped Terry ($5.4MM) and a pair of second-round picks to New Orleans for Jose Alvarado ($4.5MM).
The Knicks saved enough money in those moves that they were able to add a player on the buyout market right away, rather than having to wait until the final weeks of the season.
The Spurs reached a buyout agreement with Sochan on Wednesday once he had another team lined up, tweets Jeff McDonald of The San Antonio Express-News. While McDonald’s use of the term “buyout” suggests the fourth-year forward gave up some money as part of his release, that hasn’t been confirmed or reported elsewhere.
Here’s more on the Knicks:
- Backup guard Alvarado has quickly made a strong impression on his new team, per Jared Schwartz of The New York Post. Alvarado took umbrage with Trendon Watford on Wednesday after the Sixers forward committed a hard foul on Mitchell Robinson, sparking a Knicks run that blew the game open and ultimately resulted in a 49-point victory. “He did a hard foul, but I think he did a little extra with the staring,” Alvarado said. “I’m just not gonna go for none of that. It was just in the moment. That’s when I’m at my best, I guess, getting a little active. It worked out in my favor.” The Brooklyn native had a huge game, tying a career high with eight threes en route to a season-high 26 points, five steals, four assists and three rebounds in just 19 minutes. He was a team-high plus-35 as well, Schwartz notes. “That’s what we need,” Josh Hart said of Alvarado. “That’s what we want from him. Obviously that toughness, ability to help us get organized, ability to knock down shots. And defensively bring energy, bring physicality, get in the passing lanes, those kinds of things. That’s why he’s here.”
- Second-round pick Mohamed Diawara wasn’t expected to play much for the Knicks as a rookie, but the 20-year-old forward has taken advantage of his recent opportunities with OG Anunoby sidelined, James L. Edwards III writes for The Athletic. Hart says he noticed Diawara’s potential in training camp. “In camp, I thought he was going to be real good,” Hart said. “He’s young, raw and inexperienced. He’s good defensively, and he’s an even better shooter than I thought. It always looked good, but now it’s going in. I think he’s a good decision-maker in the pocket. He’s athletic and can finish at the rim, get guys involved. I love where he’s at, and he’s continued to work.”
- Fred Katz and James L. Edwards III of The Athletic review New York’s deadline deals and look ahead to the remainder of the season. Both writers stuck with their preseason predictions that the Knicks will make the NBA Finals, though neither feels as confident in that prediction as they did a few months ago.
- In a subscriber-only story for The New York Post, Stefan Bondy gives out midseason grades for each player on the standard roster, with Jalen Brunson receiving the lone A (Hart and Landry Shamet each got an A-minus). He also grades the performance of head coach Mike Brown (B) and the offseason moves of Leon Rose (C-minus).

Gives Landry Shamet an A- = opinion immediately discarded.
1 year 3 mill deal
Gives the knicks
21 mins a night
Tosses in 10 points off the bench
30 games worth of play
Shooting 42% from 3
Given price production and role id call Shamet an A move
By comparison
Luke Kennard is making 11 mill this year for
21 mins a night
50 games worth
10 points
49% from 3
Shamet was a great addition. He should have been taken care of much sooner last summer. Brogdon retirement was a blessing. IMO I was actually hoping for Westbrook but love Shamet play this year. Knicks fans enjoy him while you can he won’t play for cheap again. Yabu was a mistake and choosing him over Precious was a mistake however getting GTA and Sochan was an A move. Not trading for Giannis was an A move. I love the depth on this team now. This summer I’d consider OG and KAT for Giannis. OG is never healthy best ability is availability!!!!! Especially with the money he’s being paid. Bridges not as good but always available every game no matter what
Brother, its Landry Shamet. He is the Knicks 8th best player. So do the 7 guys in front of him all get A’s too? What a stupid concept. He scored 36 in one game, that raised his PPG up to 9.6, whoop de doo.
Homerism = not even once.
Davey,
I have to admit he is playing at a A+ right now for his contract and and his role. You don’t grade players on a role they are not playing. I was wrong that he could fill a role and have impact. I still want to see what he can do in the playoffs. However for the regular season AL has been right. (AL don’t let it go to your head🤣🤣🤣) Just messing with you man!! Good call
Always said Landry was our best bench player last yr. Just glad he is back lol.
I know. That’s why I’m giving credit where credit should be given you called it!!
Rating has nothing to do with ranking on a teams depth chart lmao
Rating has to do with what the individual player has produced compared to things like
Playing time
Contract value
Role
Yeah an 8th guy on the bench as a depth piece making 3 mill who plays 21 mins a night, scoring 10 a game, shoots the 3 ball well, and is paid 3 mill can earn an A
While say OG Anunoby who’s making 40 million earns a C or B cause of injury troubles limiting him to 41 games so far but when on the court he produces his usual results we’ve come to expect
It’s not that hard of a concept. Shamet is exceeding expectations while OG Isn’t meeting them
It’s so stupid. Shamet had 1 good game so he gets an A-? He has only scored over 10 points 10 times. This is childish and homerism. Shamet gets a C+ from me. Landry stinks yall. This makes you look so bad honestly. “He’s in a Knicks uniform therefore I will defend him no matter what!” Ew.
With the exception of Al on here, Knicks fans really just keep making themselves look bad. Al would never say “Shamet gets an A-” about anything about his game lol
Nobody plays to get rated lol. Bench players job is to provide energy. Keep the lead don’t make mistakes. Or apply pressure to get the lead back. Every game is different. All about playing to win. Landry is one our better bench guys.
“One good game”
You don’t know how averages work do you? You harp on one game at 36 but don’t mention his 17,16,23,18,16 games in addition to his 14, 12, 11, 11 games
Ok well
So far in February he’s averaging 28 mins a night chipping in 13 a game across 7 games
January he was playing 19 mins a night chipping in 8 points a game across 8 games
December he was playing 23 mins a night chipping in 11 points across 10 games
You harping on 1 game out of 30 where he scoring 36 points doesn’t actually skew his averages that much
With 36 points 9.6
Without 36 he’s at 9.2 a game
Still great value for a guy that’s
Making 3 million dollars
Scoring 10 a game
Playing 20 mins a night
Shooting 42% from 3
Why it upsets you this much is sad man
I’d go even further and say that beyond stats, a player that is contributing meaningful minutes on a winning team has value and if that value is a plus compared to that player’s contract cost then the player is a positive contributor to the team, not just on the floor but in terms of the economics of the roster. There are plenty of players whose stats don’t jump at you, but you can see when they play that they are positive contributors that are a good value to their teams.
Every team needs those players. Especially on your bench. Landry is a bargain at minimum.
Al – assuming good health going into the playoffs where do you rank knicks in the east?
I see them in East Finals. Also assuming they will come together and play team ball consistently. Now with bench depth definitely see East Finals. We’ll take it game by game from there lol.
Who they gonna play in the east final?
Personally I don’t care. I just want to get there. I see Cavs and Pistons as best comp. The Celtics are more than capable of winning in 2nd rd. So you can’t be looking ahead. Playing in NY sometimes works against you. The fans are so behind team they can be overconfident.
Like last yr with Pacers. Not saying they were better. Definitely didn’t give them the respect they deserved. So I watch strongly how we show up. I know Pistons want the Knicks. They better show up for Celtics or Cavs. I see Pistons or Cavs. Probably Cavs and Knicks in Finals. I’m not looking past anyone lol. That’s why I am so happy to have Alvarado and Sochan.
Knicks bench is Robinson, Alvarado, McBride, Shamet, Kolek, Hukporti, Clarkson, and Sochan. Maybe not the best starting five in the league but that bench has to be one of the best. Knicks are deep.
You forgot one of the best: Diawara!
The Knicks second round picks lately have been fantastic. Diadet probably gone like all other first round picks. Diawara could make OG expendable in a Kat and OG Giannis trade
“Best bench” = 1st round exit incoming
Better than the Warriors getting eliminated in the Play-In
They made it to the 2nd round last year?
And the Knicks made it to the ECF
ECF is minor league finals WCF is big league finals
