Knicks guard Miles McBride will have surgery on Friday to fix a core muscle injury, also known as a sports hernia, and may be out of action until the playoffs, sources tell Fred Katz of The Athletic (Twitter link).
McBride has missed the past five games, but the reason was listed as left ankle injury management. The 25-year-old suffered a high ankle sprain in early December that sidelined him for eight games.
McBride is putting up career-best numbers off New York’s bench in his first season under head coach Mike Brown. He’s averaging 12.9 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 28.0 minutes per night while shooting 43.4% from the field and a career-high 42% from three-point range.
The Knicks upgraded their backcourt today by agreeing to acquire Jose Alvarado from New Orleans, so he should inherit a lot of McBride’s playing time for the rest of the regular season.

Jose Alvarado can replace him
Not exactly. Deuce is a scorer and more efficient than Alvarado. It’ll help but they have different styles of play.
Now it makes more sense. I hope he’s back for playoffs. With surgeries you never know. Have to have insurance here. Alvarado is from Bklyn NY. He understands what’s going on with Knicks ….
Get well Duece .. 🙏
The move for Alvarado is a good one; his style of play is very different from that of Deuce, but the aggressiveness and toughness that Alvarado brings is something this team is a bit lacking in. I love his defense and his ability to attack on both sides of the ball. Hoping Deuce can make it back for the playoffs because his shooting is tough to replace.
Real bad news. McBride has shot lights out this year, but, IMO, his more indispensible value is on defense. Particularly during the recent winning streak before being hurt. Alvarado can replace some of that, but he’s too small to do it in full. Alvarado is a better facilitator, but the skill sets are different.
