Steve Kerr isn’t sure if he’ll be coaching the Warriors next season. He is certain he won’t be coaching another NBA team.
The longtime Golden State coach discussed his uncertain future after the Warriors’ 111-96 loss to Phoenix in the play-in tournament on Friday night.
There’s been plenty of speculation regarding Kerr, whose contract expired with the end of the Warriors’ season. The situation won’t be resolved immediately, as Kerr plans to take a week or two to gather his thoughts before meeting with controlling owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy regarding a new contract.
“We’ll talk about what’s next for the Warriors, what the plan is this offseason,” Kerr said, per the Associated Press. “And we will come to a collaborative decision on what’s next. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I still love coaching. But I get it. These jobs all have an expiration date. there’s a run that happens, and when the run ends, sometimes it’s time for new blood and new ideas and all that. And, if that’s the case, then I will be just nothing but grateful for the most amazing opportunity any person could have to coach this franchise, in front of our fans in the Bay and to coach Steph Curry, to coach Dray and the whole group.”
Kerr has been the Warriors’ coach for 12 seasons. He’s won four championships with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green leading the way.
Both of them are hoping Kerr will be back for a 13th season and beyond. Each player has one year remaining on their contracts, though Green could become a free agent if he declines his $27.6MM option.
“I want Coach to be happy. I want him to be excited about the job. I want him to believe you know he’s the right guy for the job,” Curry said. “I want him to have an opportunity to again enjoy what he does. So, whatever that means for him, you know, everybody’s plan is their own. And I’m not going to try to tell anybody what to do. He knows how I feel about him. That shouldn’t even need to be said.”
“I just don’t deal with change well,” Green said. “I don’t love it. So, I don’t want to think about that. I hope that’s not the case. but we’ll see what happens.”
Before the game ended, Kerr hugged both players and stated: “I don’t know what’s going to happen next, but I love you guys to death. Thank you.”
Kerr indicated that coaching Curry the remainder of the Hall of Fame guard’s career is a consideration.
“That’s part of the equation,” Kerr said, per Anthony Slater of ESPN. “I don’t want to walk away from Steph. I’m definitely not going and coaching somewhere else next year in the NBA. I would never walk away from Steph. But all this stuff has to be aligned and right. Those are all discussions that will be had.”

If he loves Green it’s the kind of love a parent has for a wayward child ….hes such an embarrassment to himself, Kerr, the Warriors and the league. That scene last night was pathetic.
You sound like an AI-enabled Troll. A decade ago, you guys were complaining that the Warriors were to soft play in the rough physical world of the 80s and 90s. Now, Draymond is such a meanie. He doesn’t behave like a proper…40 lashes.
“a decade ago, you guys”
Hey man, you might want to let go what some anonymous commenters said on this board 10 years ago.
Also, Draymond acts like an idiot, not a “meanie”.
If Kerr comes back its on a 1 year deal. Going to be a big off season for teh warriors. Just hope they do not trade their 1st round pick to bring in some old all star. Injuries and age hurt them this year. They need to get younger and more athletic. No more bringing in players over 30.
Anyone heard from our “very special” warriors fan at all? Wonder how he’s taking learning what was obvious all along that this team was cooked like burnt toast and dead on arrival.
Can someone tell me of in game adjustment Kerr did to win a game. I can’t but I can name many for other coaches.
The only time I remember that’s significant is when they were playing the grizzlies in the playoffs and he switched Andrew Bogut onto Tony Allen.
Tony Allen couldn’t shoot a lick so Bogut could camp underneath and not worry about Allen.
It turned Memphis into a 4 on 5 offensive team, so they ultimately had to pull Tony out of the game, which was significant because he was a defensive stopper in his own right. Things didn’t end well for the Grizz.
There was nothing Kerr could do. Losing Moody and Butler the season was over. Kerr made sure Booker didn’t beat them but the poor defense left Green wide open. Suns of course just made sure Curry didn’t beat them and after KP went out there was nobody on offense to carry the team. They left Podz open on the 3 knowing he throws them up there.
Or maybe they had the gameplan right from the start? People forget that the Warriors were terrible before Kerr came along.
Time to go – Warriors window has shut, they are on the verge of a cliff dive back to the 90s version.
You’re probably right, but I hold out Hope we don’t go back to that because of this ownership team.
The prior regime and the product they put on the floor was depressing, but this current group sparks a lot of hope.
Just remembering the coaching carousel in the 90s and 2000s was enough to make me spill my coffee..
The 90s weren’t so bad. The 80s were worse. No drafted day trades, and a point guard, they could have been a dominant team.
How ya feeling now Davey?

Who told you all GSW would take a massive leap once they had Steph+KP+Al+Dray all actually playing together? ME. Who is the only one here giving them a huge chance at beating OKC? ME.
Who better than Steph Curry? NO ONE.
All these naysaying, loser-mentality, fake-Dub Nation, mute list-fodder posters on here are once again, proven wrong over and over. Take your draft picks and shove them, we just need to win. Curry WILL play DEEP into his 40s. Bring us Giannis and the dynasty WILL continue!!! BELIEVE in STEPH!!!
All that trash talk and you’re eating huge slices of humble pie lmao. Didn’t even make it to the Thunder
Massive leap lmao beat choke artist Clippers and get clapped trounced by the Suns
Only thing Draymond did right last night was get himself ejected lmao. 6 points 5 turnovers should’ve just stayed in the locker room.
Davey is the forever dreamer that doesn’t want to admit that the team just got old and not the same team they were 10 years ago. He will claim they are 1 player away from being a championship team. He will not change. its no use talking him into reality that the team needs to rebuild. He will be back claiming they will get giannis and win a championship next year.
It just seems like the end of Kerr, Steph, and Draymond. If the Warriors get lucky in the lottery, I would seriously consider rebuilding. Trade Steph Curry to Charlotte and trade Draymond to Detroit, their hometown teams. Give them both a real opportunity to win
I doubt Curry wants to go back to Charlotte.
He said if he were to play for any other team, it would be for the Hornets. He did jokingly ask after Dell Curry’s jersey retirement if he could wear #30. Steph said he is keeping his options open, but he’ll most likely remain in Golden State.
