Outside of the wrap he wore on his right knee, there was little indication that Stephen Curry had missed 27 straight games as he made his return Sunday night at Chase Center. The Warriors star thrilled the home crowd with 29 points in 26 minutes, nailing outrageous three-pointers, showing a burst on drives to the basket and nearly leading the team to a comeback victory vs. Houston, writes Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area.
“You can hear it with the crowd, and there’s a different energy in the building, and there’s a different confidence with our team,” coach Steve Kerr said. “He just infuses the whole team with confidence. Being able to play off him makes the game much easier for everyone else. There is a momentum, a confidence. He’s Steph Curry for a reason.”
Curry came off the bench for the first time since the 2011/12 season as Kerr eased him back into action. His first appearance came with 4:54 left in the first quarter, and fans responded with a 45-second ovation. There were a few signs of rust before he got on the board with a three-pointer from the left wing with 34.1 seconds remaining in the quarter.
“The first (quarter) was tough, the second one was great,” Curry said. “Second quarter, once I got my feet underneath me and obviously momentum carried all the work you put in, the rehab to get through even 26 minutes at that level, I was very grateful.”
From that point on, it was vintage Curry. He hit 5-of-10 shots from behind the arc and was 11-of-21 overall, along with four assists. The Rockets frequently threw double teams at him, but Curry was able to keep moving and create open looks. He hit a string of big shots in the fourth quarter, even breaking out his trademark shimmy after being knocked to the ground on an and-one, and nearly won the game with a 30-foot attempt over two defenders at the buzzer.
“There was a lot of nerves all day,” he said. “My family supported me at home, and I was a nervous wreck trying to pass the hours before I got to the arena. But once you get back into your routine, you’ve been doing it for so long, muscle memory takes over. And the adrenaline takes over. I appreciate the fans and the reception, just the buzz that was in the arena, because you know at that certain point you want to be able to tap into that. Very grateful. It was a beautiful day, and now I can kind of settle into how we’re going to finish the year.”
Curry’s return could dramatically change the equation for Golden State heading into the postseason. There were no signs of discomfort from the patellofemoral pain syndrome (runner’s knee) that had sidelined him since January 30, and he and the team remain hopeful that it won’t flare up again. At 36-42, the Warriors are on track to enter the postseason as the No. 10 seed, which means they’ll have to win two play-in games on the road just to get a shot at defending champ Oklahoma City in the playoffs, but Curry’s return gives them reason to believe they’ll be a tough out.
“We have two meaningful games, hopefully down the stretch,” Curry said, referring to the play-in tournament next week. “But this is meaningful basketball in the sense of preparing ourselves for that moment. It’s not like we can just sleepwalk through these last four games and not focus on details that will help us win a do-or-die game and then do it again.”

If the Warriors cough up the 11th pick in the draft for a couple of play-in wins, it would be a huge mistake in my opinion.
Even though I’m an irritating voice in repeating the mantra of “it doesn’t matter where you pick, just draft well in your slot…,” my tune is changing here with Golden State.
Fingers crossed that Portland somehow whoops the behind of the Warriors 2 Wednesdays from now.
They are not beating OKC in the first round. IKC is too deep of a team. I want the warriors to draft a young big man they need.
Do you have anyone specific in mind that you would like the Warriors to draft?
Who is that young big man that would help them out?
There is a few in the draft around the 10th pick. It’s a deep draft even in the 2nd round.
Gary, My pick is Yaxel Lendeborg, 50/50 chance he’s available at #11. Given the desire to give Steph the maximum help ASAP, he’s is the most NBA-ready big, and should be able to give 16-20 mpg from Day 1 because of his rebounding and switching ability. The definitive “high-bottom” pick.
He has limited upside, though. He’s almost 24 years old and will never have the footwork to score much inside at the NBA level. Several other guys that get picked later would likely be better for GSW in 3-4 years, after Steph leaves.
This is the kind of loaded draft where there are several future stars at 11-20, and I’m guessing GSW has fallen in love with somebody else.

Lendeborg? Why? The Warriors don’t need another slow wing on the perimeter. Wouldn’t you think the Warriors need a power forward or center? There’s plenty of those available around number 11?
There’s so many folks here, not meaning you in this case, who don’t understand the difference between a great college player and a guy who won’t have enough talent to make it as a starter on the next level.
Speed and quickness is huge in the NBA so I’d rather have one of the dynamic guards which of course is a secondary need for the Warriors or a big man/post player.
Lendeborg lol !!! Yes he’s an amazing college player, and he’ll be a decent pro, but at number 11 in this loaded draft, you need to score a real player, with real potential ahead of him, not a guy with holes in his physical ability like lacking quickness lol !!
The problem with drafting a big at #11 is that they are not plug-n-play. You’ll have to wait a couple of seasons, at least, for them to produce.
One reason to draft Lendeborg, we can shut Al up. He is already demanding that the Warriors draft him.
How about Braylon Mullins? The Warriors might be able to trade back to get him. They might be able to land Mara if they trade back.
Since every mock draft is different, and who knows which one is the most accurate, here is on site tries to find a consensus.

Thank you for the link to NBA draft. I like that website but this profile writeup here for the kid is way off base. He is not a elite stretch 4. That’s just wrong.
This kid is an undersized 4 or a slow 3.
Neither of those type profile as worth anything on the defensive end.
How is he going to guard Pascal Siakam? He’s the type of four you’re looking for. 6-11, shoots from distance, blocks shots, runs the floor. A guy like that.
Not an undersized four. I can see an undersized five like bam, but an undersized four is ridiculous.
Remember Ike Diogu, Byron Houston, Jason Caffey.., I’m tired of bringing in undersized fours.
This kid may work elsewhere and be a star on the wing because he’s plug-and play right now, but for the Warriors absolutely not.
He’ll be standing next to Greymond on the perimeter and didn’t we learn anything from having an undersized four with Jonathan Kuminga?
Agreed. Getting through the playin round means they draft 15th or later. Not a good thing. Tankathons mock shows them drafting some point guard at 11. And skipping Lendeberg. Let’s hope Tankathon is wrong. Lendeberg is my pick.
Claude what do you think the kid from Michigan will bring to the Warriors specifically? What if he’s there at 11, why would the Warriors pick him in your opinion?
you’re probably right. arc….but I’d rather watch some meaningful games. its been 2 months without 30
…….he’s clearly a difference maker. enjoy the ride for however long it lasts. don’t be a negative Nelly
They have a chance next year but without Moody and Butler there’s no chance at a championship. Also KP needs to improve his defense.
Pretty fun game last night. Gives tons of hope that Curry is not done yet !!
Dare I say the Warriors should pull a Kawhi Leonard with Steph next season?
Play no more than three times a week with days off here and there and perhaps even have Steph come off the bench to maximize his PT/efficiency.
A huge reason for liking this plan is that it forces the Warriors to put a real team on the floor for the starting 5 and they’re not relying so much on 39-year-old Steph Curry in next year‘s playoffs…, should they be so fortunate.
Thoughts ?
@Gary, I’m calling BS on a Kahwi to Warriors trade. Clippers are playing to win, not tank. They would want a bunch of FRP’s, and GSW will not do that. And, sorry, Clippers aren’t taking Butler’s contract.
Giannis is the only superstar the Warriors would give away a bunch of FRP’s to get.
I’m with you on Kawhi Leonard no chance to the Warriors. LA is in love with their golden child even with all his warts.
There is no way in a gazillion years Steve Balmer trades away the kid he gave up so much to acquire and pay.
I don’t mean trade for Kawhi I mean treat Steph Curry like he is Kawhi.
Play three times a week max. And even come off the bench in Steph’s case. What do you think?
> Play three times a week max. And even come off the bench in
> Steph’s case. What do you think?
It’s a good idea. Basically it means no back-to-backs. I think it’s exactly what GSW committed to before this season, with Steph’s support, that he’d play about 64 total regular season games.
But once the season starts, they always talk themselves out of the commitment to Steph’s long-term health.
I believe the bone bruise will make the team, and Steph, stick to resting more next season and beyond.
Hope for what? They would play OKC in the 1st rd. Are they gonna Tonya Harding their top 7 players?
With Draymond “Jeff Gillooly” Green, anything is possible.
You mean hope for next season? Cause this one is gone
Agreed. Losing to the Rockets at home last night with the roster as it stands going into the playoffs, should clearly be an indication of which direction you go. To most of us here know that direction is to find a way to lose in two Wednesdays.
Yeah, I kinda hope they can get Keaton Wagler with the 11th pick. Really liked his game
I like him too. He’s very smooth, has great composure, good size, and I think he is able to shine in big moments. Seems like an all-around winner.
The decision to allow Curry to return isn’t the same as Giannis in my opinion but I still question both. What’s the payoff? So what they make the play-in, maybe? Is they’re any reason to think that with our without they’ll make it past the first round? But what if he reinjures himself? Is it worth the risk to put him out there for 28 minutes a game? How many times did we wince reach time he left his feet and fell? They’re was one play where it look like he landed awkwardly and fell on his back. In practice you’re not jumping and landing among a bunch of bodies bumping you mid air or possibly landing on someone’s foot. It’s stupid.
Curry playing the last couple regular season games is not to extend Golden State’s season.
Absolutely not.
It’s my opinion that The entire organization is on the same page and that’s to secure the number 11 pick in this June’s NBA draft. That’s it.
The reason Steph is playing right now is to get some quality NBA run under him so there’s not such a long gap between January 30 and October 16.
Last night was a great sign to us and even he himself that it’s not over. And by that I mean NEXT season.
> It’s my opinion that The entire organization is on the same page
> and that’s to secure the number 11 pick in this June’s NBA draft.
> That’s it.
Mission accomplished. So why wouldn’t they try to win all their remaining games? They could win the Chip without making their draft position worse.
If they win and move on to the number eight seed by winning their play in games, they would move from number 11 in the draft to number 13 or 14 or whatever.
The Warriors need to lose the play in and sit securely in that wonderful number 11 draft position.
> If they win and move on to the number eight seed by winning
> their play in games, they would move from number 11 in the
> draft to number 13 or 14 or whatever.
That is true, and I stand corrected if I confused the matter.
You know me by now, Ari. I’m the one who’s usually confused easily.
I’m fairly certain that if they become an 8 seed, and play okc, they become 15th or later in the draft. There would be 14 teams that didn’t get in the playoffs. GSW would not be in that 14 if they play okc.
@clauderaymond, you are right: if GSW wins two play-in games they’d worsen their draft position from the current 11th best to no better than 15th best.
@Gary
I disagree. This is Steph Curry we are talking about. He’s got 15 years under his belt. He doesn’t need to play 7 games too get him ready for 2026-27. That’s absurd to suggest that. There’s a lot more to lose than to gain from him playing and verdict having him on the floor isn’t exactly helping their chance for a better draft position. They should just keep playing the rookies and learn to play without him so that next year they won’t be so dependent.
Runners knee is caused by muscle overuse. Of course he needs time to get back up to game shape. Do you want the injury to be repeated.
Does that have to be done in 8 games now vs an entire offseason? Get real.
Knicksfan, Curry loves to hoop. If he’s healthy, he wants to play. You can see in another article on this website how Giannis is healthy and ready to play and yet is very upset the team won’t allow it.
So the case with Giannis is not quite the same and for this reason. He’s 31. He doesn’t need to close the gap between his injury and October 16.
There’s not a question of his probable effectiveness next season. He’ll most likely come back and play well.
With Steph’s age, that’s not a similar guarantee so he’s getting out there and giving it a go.
I’m a Knicks fan, but I’m also a Steph fan, so it was beyond enjoyable to watch Steph come back and ball-out last night. He was incredible. I was exhausted from 7 straight days of work, but could not take my eyes off the screen during that game. The NBA is just so much better with Steph in it. Could only have been better if he hit that shot at the buzzer.
1 point loss with Steph on mis restriction, so, add Al Horford (to prevent that Sengun run when Kerr went small) and let Steph play a full game = GSW wins.
Once again, Kerr playing rotations of Steph, Seth, Melton/GP2, Podz and Dray isn’t helping. Why does he keep doing this when it never works? Sengun dominated for a quarter while Steve went small, so stupid. Al Horford bullies Sengun if he plays. Kristaps had a terrible game for some reason, likely from shouldering the load with too many smalls out there.
I kept telling all these loser-mentality Warriors doomers online they were wrong, and they are going to try and make the Finals from the 10 seed with Steph healthy, and that is their obvious plan, I nailed that one. I cant believe people hate the Warriors so much they were/are literally saying they should give up on a season – even saying they should forfeit the play-in games – just because they are shook by Curry beating them in the past. Pure coping. Grow tf up. No team will ever forfeit a play-in game. Ever.
Getting a better draft pick means nothing – this team took Wiseman over Lamelo – this team is likely going to trade their pick in next years draft no matter what, and you all should stop acting otherwise. Its the draft after this one that is superloaded, so they should keep that pick and swap this one for someone like Trey Murphy III.
@daveyJ, I agree. The entire reason for Steph coming back is to try 100% to win in the play-in and playoffs.
GSW has optimized their draft position. There is no reason to deliberately lose any more games.
The amount of glazing being done in this piece is absolutely insane. I get that a Warriors story needs to be posted every 14 hours but damn
> The amount of glazing being done in this piece is absolutely insane.
Of course, it’s all about the clicks, so the media gets some of the blame.
But that’s only part of the story. The Warriors’ PR machine knows it can create a voracious appetite amongst its fans for stories about a team that will finish well under .500 both this year and the next. They know it won’t work forever, but for now the media is willing.
Last week, Warriors’ PR created a script hyping Steph’s return for Kerr and Steph to act over the week. Every day, Kerr and Steph made appearances hyping Steph’s return. It worked. No stories about how bad the team is.
Last night’s game at Chase featured videos on the scoreboard of Kerr and Steph that were nothing about winning. And the fans ate it up. Nobody cared that GSW lost.
GSW ownership is playing the long game. It expects the team to continue to suck through next season, but by restricting the focus to Steph Curry hero worship, it keeps the media from discussing the elephant in the living-room.
Suck next year too? Interesting.
By “suck”, I mean:
1. be at best, a play-in team that is projected to win 35-4o games,
2. having by far the oldest roster in the league, and that will be 1 year older than this year, when they were highly unavailable.
3. with $58M/yr committed to a player that isn’t expected back until late February
4. with $13M commited to a starter (Moody) that likely misses the entire year
5. that doesn’t want to go further into the luxury tax given the tiny chance of contending.
OK. I don’t like to hear it, but if that’s the word on the street I’ll find a way to suffer through it.
Moody should be back by the time training camp opens. Unless there are complications, he should be back to 95% by December. Celebrini is really good at what he does.
I think Ari is reading into to many internal Warriors machinations that just doubtful. They won’t have to deal with the Kuminga drama to start the year.
KP, and possibly Bassey, will give them more options at the 4 and 5. If Horford returns, they can spread the minutes around.
Santos, Moody, and Podz have seemed to hit their strides.
Butler back by Feb? He seems pretty motivated.
That’s because the team isn’t that bad, and all these doomsdayers are totally wrong. This is an easy top 2 team now if everyone was healthy and everyone knows it. Saying idiotic things like “they are done” is very wrong.
The fact that there’s so-called Warriors “fans” who believe in the lies that are driven by the Curry-haters who have been spouting nonsense every single year of Steph’s career, disgusts me. They all look like babysoft losers, not the 4x Champ fans of a dynasty that is still in-process. I am ashamed of each and every one of them. People like Gary are simply frauds, Gary has been a Boston fan all along. I take KnicksAl’s takes over Gary’s, as Al understands reality, while Gary is a “anything Davey says, I say the opposite” childish chud on here. Only the worst trolls online defend Kerr and Podz and we all know who that is around here…
If GSW wins the title from the 10 seed like only I am saying on here, watch the goalposts move to “Davey wrong and bad, actually (despite being correct in his analysis).”
@daveyJ I’m not talking about the Warriors with Jimmy and Moody. Injuries are the crux of the matter.
After 2022, I dont even think injuries matter. Oh and would you look at that: the refs admitted they blew 2 late calls against the Warriors, that should have been fouls on Houston vs Curry. So, last night’s game was a W the refs stole from GSW.
If last night proved anything, it proved the Rockets are total garbage and the Warriors are better even without half the roster.
> After 2022, I dont even think injuries matter.
I know you saw that Steph himself was injured for half this season.
link to youtube.com
if anyone can put a group of scrubs on his back all the way to the title…it’s Steph Curry. All he needed was 2-3 more mins of playing time, which he normally would have had, and GSW wins. Also the refs admitted blowing 2 calls link to sfgate.com GSW could have easily had that game. Not a legit loss. Chef gunna go off for 50+ vs the Kings, he has to be furious about how that game ended with the missed calls, lol
