Ford’s Latest: Bulls, Sixers, Lakers, Afflalo
The latest Insider-only mock draft from Chad Ford of ESPN.com is full of rumors, draft-related and otherwise. Let’s dive in and hit the highlights:
- The Bulls are offering Taj Gibson, Tony Snell, and the 16th and 19th picks in this year’s draft to the Wolves, Ford hears. That’s presumably as part of a Kevin Love package, though Ford doesn’t make it clear exactly what Chicago wants back in return for those assets.
- The Sixers continue to explore the idea of a Michael Carter-Williams trade as they seek another top-10 pick. The Lakers would like to acquire Carter-Williams and Thaddeus Young for No. 7 and Steve Nash, but they’ve gained no traction on that proposal, according to Ford.
- The Magic have offered picks Nos. 4 and 12 plus Arron Afflalo to the Cavs and Bucks as they attempt to move into the top two, but neither Milwaukee nor Cleveland has bitten. They’re also dangling Afflalo to the Kings and Nuggets for the eighth and 11th selections, respectively.
- The Bucks are looking for an additional lottery pick, Ford reports, citing “serious” interest from other teams in Larry Sanders, John Henson and Brandon Knight. The Nuggets have spoken with Milwaukee about the No. 11 pick, according to Ford.
- A source close to both the Nuggets and Dario Saric deny that Denver has given him a promise to draft him at No. 11.
- There are several other medical issues that came up in Joel Embiid‘s physical in addition to his foot and back, sources tell Ford. It’s unclear how much concern there is regarding them.
Darrell Arthur Opts In To Stay With Nuggets
Darrell Arthur has opted in to remain with the Nuggets, the team announced. He’ll make $3,457,149 next season, the final year on his contract. The Jerry Hicks client was strongly leaning toward picking up the option as of March. Arthur’s decision plus Nate Robinson‘s opt-in adds about $5.564MM to Denver’s commitments for 2014/15, though both were expected to remain on their contracts.
The Nuggets will have about $64.6MM in guaranteed salary for next season with Arthur and Robinson in tow, not counting the salary for the team’s No. 11 pick. Denver will almost assuredly enter July over the salary cap, projected to come in at $63.2MM. The team’s involvement in recent Kevin Love talks indicates that GM Tim Connelly is pursuing major changes via trade, with the prospect of a free agent signing for more than the mid-level likely off the table.
Arthur didn’t have much impact for the Nuggets after coming over via trade a year ago. He averaged 5.9 points and 3.1 rebounds in 17.1 minutes per game this past season. He’s never averaged double-figures in points or rebounds and 20.1 MPG is his career high, so it’s likely the 26-year-old wouldn’t have been able to find a salary equal to the value of his option on the open market. He’ll instead attempt to build his stock in advance of free agency next summer.
Nate Robinson Opts In For 2014/15
JUNE 23RD: Robinson has officially opted in to remain with the Nuggets, the team announced.
JUNE 22ND: No surprise here: Robinson’s agent Aaron Goodwin tells Sam Amick of USA Today (on Twitter) that his client will exercise his $2.1MM player option for next season with the Nuggets.
MARCH 6TH: Injured Nuggets guard Nate Robinson will exercise his player option to return to the team next season, according to Chris Dempsey of The Denver Post. The move is not at all surprising, since the left ACL tear he suffered in January knocked him out for the rest of this season. Robinson tells Dempsey he’ll be ready for training camp in the fall.
The Aaron Goodwin client will make $2,106,720 next season, and that salary will push Denver’s guaranteed commitments for 2014/15 to nearly $61.156MM. Darrell Arthur has given early indications that he’ll exercise his player option, too, and the more than $3.457MM coming to him would almost assuredly push the Nuggets over the salary cap for next season.
Robinson averaged 10.4 points in 19.7 minutes per game over 44 contests in his debut season with the Nuggets. The ninth-year veteran shot 37.7% from three-point range, slightly better than his career average of 36.4%.
Knicks Consider Trading Iman Shumpert
9:22am: Grantland’s Zach Lowe suggests the Heat, who have the 26th overall pick, are in play for Shumpert.
8:40am: Iman Shumpert was a frequent subject of trade rumors for much of last season, but it appeared that the arrival of Phil Jackson had ended such talk, as his name was on a list of Jackson’s favorites and a report indicated that he was in the team’s long-term plans. Still, Jackson’s Knicks have explored the idea of swapping Shumpert for a late first-round pick, tweets Marc Stein of ESPN.com. The Knicks have apparently been aggressively seeking a first-rounder, but they have only $1.8MM in cash to dangle instead of the full allotment of $3.2MM because of the Andrea Bargnani trade.
The Knicks came close to a deadline deal that would have sent Shumpert to the Clippers, and they rejected another proposal from the Thunder around the same time. That deal with Oklahoma City reportedly would have involved one of their two 2014 first-round picks. The Thunder have picks Nos. 21 and 29, and the Clippers hold No. 28, but it’s unclear if either team would be willing to give those picks up at this point for Shumpert or another player the Knicks could offer.
Shumpert, who turns 24 on draft day, averaged 6.7 points on 37.8% shooting this past season, both career lows. Still, his calling card is on the defensive end, and he still has one season left on his rookie scale contract, at slightly less than $2.617MM.
Bucks Notes: Embiid, Payroll, Team President
It appears as though the Bucks are ruling out the possibility that they’d take Joel Embiid with the No. 2 overall pick, tweets Charles F. Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Bucks co-owner Marc Lasry said during comments at a Milwaukee civic meeting today that word of Embiid’s injury makes the team’s decision much easier, as Gardner notes.
“It’s hard to take Embiid,” Lasry said, according to Gardner (Twitter link). “We want somebody who is going to help us on Day 1.”
The chances that Embiid would go to Milwaukee were already reportedly “slim to none,” so while Lasry didn’t make a surprising remark, he nonetheless seemed to confirm the slippage in the injured Kansas center’s draft stock. Lasry addressed a few more Bucks storylines, as we’ll detail here:
- Lasry indicated that the team would spend more on the roster, as Gardner passes along (Twitter link). Milwaukee’s team salary was nearly $54.23MM this past season, below the cap and fourth lowest in the NBA. That doesn’t count Drew Gooden‘s nearly $6.7MM amnestied salary.
- The Bucks are interviewing candidates for team president, Lasry said, as Mike Davis of the Journal Sentinel tweets. It’s unclear if the person in that position would deal mostly with financial affairs or would have authority over basketball operations. GM John Hammond‘s job is reportedly safe only through the draft.
- Lasry and fellow co-owner Wesley Edens will announce the addition of minority owners to the team next month, Gardner notes (on Twitter).
Contract Details: Knicks, Pelicans, Heat, Bulls
August 1st will be a key date for many teams and players in the NBA, as Mark Deeks of ShamSports details in the latest update to his salary database. Knicks guard Shannon Brown and Melvin Ely of the Pelicans have their minimum-salary contracts fully guaranteed if their respective teams don’t waive them by the end of that day, Deeks reports. It’s also the day when Justin Hamilton of the Heat earns a partial guarantee of $408,241 and Bulls big man Lou Amundson has his deal partially guaranteed for $300K if they’re not waived, according to Deeks. The salary data guru has a few more revelations, as we note below:
- Hamilton’s partial guarantee increases to $612,362 should the Heat elect not to waive by the end of December 1st.
- Lamar Odom‘s deal becomes fully guaranteed if he remains on the Knicks roster past September 10th.
- The Knicks have another deadline to consider on September 15th, the final day they can waive Jeremy Tyler without owing him a $100K partial guarantee.
- Jorge Gutierrez receives a $25K partial guarantee if he sticks with the Nets past September 26th.
- Jarvis Varnado‘s deal with the Sixers is already partially guaranteed for $75K.
Andray Blatche Opts Out
SATURDAY, JUNE 21ST, 11:25am: Blatche has officially opted out, his agency ASM Sports announced via Twitter (H/T Tim Bontemps of The New York Post).
THURSDAY, MAY 15TH, 12:58pm: Andray Blatche says he’ll turn down his player option for next season but adds that he’d nonetheless like to re-sign with the Nets, tweets Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News. Blatche’s option is worth slightly less than $1.438MM, but much like last summer, the Andy Miller client can probably fetch more on the market.
Blatche originally signed a one-year, minimum-salary deal with the Nets in 2012 when his stock had cratered following Washington’s decision to amnesty him that summer. He re-signed with Brooklyn last year to a deal at the full value of the Non-Bird exception, but this year, Brooklyn can give him much more via Early Bird rights. That will allow the Nets to give him a four-year deal with a starting salary of up to 104.5% of the estimated $5.565MM league average salary for 2013/14. I’m not sure he’d command quite so much, but Brooklyn won’t be nearly as limited with Blatche as it was last year.
The 27-year-old averaged 11.2 points and 5.3 rebounds in 22.2 minutes per game this season as a backup big man for the Nets, compiling an 18.8 PER that’s quite high for a non-starter. There’s a decent chance a rival suitor will lob an inflated offer and the promise of more playing time his way, but the Nets have shown no fear of getting involved in a bidding war, in spite of this season’s massive tax bill. Blatche’s decision to opt out doesn’t give Brooklyn any cap room or significantly alter the team’s chances of dropping out of the tax. So, Nets GM Billy King will probably do what he can to bring him back, though that’s just my speculation.
Cavs Hire David Blatt As Coach
The Cavs have named David Blatt head coach, the team announced. The 55-year-old Massachusetts native makes an unprecented jump from Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv straight into an NBA head coaching position despite a lack of NBA experience as a player, coach or executive.
Cleveland and the Mike Tannenbaum client were deep into discussions on a deal Thursday night and had resumed talks Friday morning following reports that the Cavs had offered him the job. It’s a four-year contract worth $3.33MM in base salary each season, with incentive clauses that would bump the annual salaries as high as $5MM. The fourth year is a team option.
Blatt beats out Clippers assistant Tyronn Lue, who briefly was the lone competition in a two-man race Thursday. Fellow Clippers assistant Alvin Gentry, whom like Lue received a second interview with the team, instead accepted a position Thursday night as an assistant for the Warriors. Blatt was on Cleveland’s radar from the start of its search, but he emerged as a strong candidate late in the process, and his announcement last week that he was leaving Maccabi Tel Aviv to pursue an NBA job appeared to accelerate the process. He said at that time that he’d spoken with GM David Griffin by phone, and this week he had a formal interview with the club.
Blatt has drawn raves for his work overseas, and as the head man for the Russian national team, he worked with Sergey Karasev, whom the Cavs picked 19th in last year’s draft. Still, multiple reports indicate that the hiring all but removes Cleveland from the race to land LeBron James this summer. Still, the Cavs aren’t concerned with adding either a coach or players to bend to the four-time MVP’s wishes, tweets Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio.
The Warriors were pushing Blatt to become an assistant coach for them, and people close to him were apparently advising him to pursue the Golden State job rather than become the first European coach to take an NBA head coaching position. The Timberwolves and Hawks were also reportedly eyeing him for assistant coaching positions, and in Minnesota’s case, he appeared to be Flip Saunders‘ top choice to become a coach-in-waiting of sorts who’d eventually take over as head coach for Saunders.
The Cavs reportedly also interviewed Mark Price, Alvin Gentry, Adrian Griffin, Tyronn Lue, Vinny Del Negro and Lionel Hollins for their head coaching job. Nate McMillan and Mark Jackson also drew mention as candidates. The Cavs also appeared to make a strong run at hiring marquee college coaches John Calipari, Kevin Ollie, Billy Donovan and Tom Izzo.

Southwest Notes: Nowitzki, ‘Melo, Pelicans
Zach Randolph is No. 10 in the latest Hoops Rumors Free Agent Power Rankings, but it seems like he’ll be off-limits to other suitors come July, as agent Raymond Brothers and the Grizzlies appear to be making significant progress toward a deal. That might have the effect of driving up the value of other free agents amid a class that’s highlighted by players with option clauses and restricted free agents. Here’s the latest on the Grizzlies and their Southwest Division rivals:
- Dirk Nowitzki has encouraged the Mavs to consider signing Carmelo Anthony, but he nonetheless believes that ‘Melo ending up in Dallas is not a realistic outcome, as Bryan Gutierrez of ESPNDallas.com observes. Still, a recent report indicated that the Mavs are among the three top teams on Anthony’s list of preferred destinations.
- Executives around the league believe it’ll be an active offseason for the Pelicans, tweets Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders. That’s in spite of more than $54MM in salary commitments for next season and comments from GM Dell Demps, who said in April that he wants to see more of the team’s existing core together.
- Aaron Craft, Markel Brown, Viktor Gaddefors, Jordan Morgan and Ojars Silins are among the draft prospects who’ll work out for the Grizzlies on Sunday, the team announced.
Magic Eye Top-Two Pick Amid Embiid Concern
3:53pm: Embiid is expected to recover in four to six months, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports (Twitter link).
12:25pm: The Magic placed calls to the Cavs and Bucks about moving up to acquire their selections after news surfaced of Joel Embiid‘s broken foot, and the Jazz and Sixers made the same inquiries, according to Chad Ford of ESPN.com in his latest Insider-only piece. Ford hears from teams who believe Embiid’s recovery timetable is anywhere from four months to a year. Reports have indicated that Utah and Philadelphia have made previous attempts at moving up, but it looks like Embiid’s injury prompted Orlando to pursue trade options it hadn’t been considering. Cleveland and Milwaukee hold the first and second picks, respectively, in Thursday’s draft.
Ford believes the Magic, who pick fourth, had narrowed their choices to Dante Exum and Noah Vonleh before Embiid’s injury, but Thursday’s bombshell apparently prompted desire on the Cavs’ part to bring Exum in for a workout. The Australian guard is the most likely candidate to break into the top three picks if Embiid falls to No. 4 or below, so it would seem Orlando wants to ensure it has a chance to take Exum.
The chances that Embiid goes first or second in the draft are “slim to none,” Ford writes, adding that there’s only a slight chance the Sixers take him at No. 3. The Magic would be 50-50 to take him presuming they stay at No. 4, according to Ford, who says that it’s doubtful the Jazz would draft him fifth. It sounds like Embiid’s floor is No. 6, as Ford hears Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge wouldn’t pass on him at that position as long as the big man’s surgery today goes as planned.
