Andres Nocioni

Sixers Waive Andres Nocioni

The 76ers have officially waived Andres Nocioni, the team announced in a press release. Philadelphia had allowed Nocioni to explore other opportunites in anticipation of a possible contract buyout.

"We want to sincerely thank Andres for his contributions to our team and maintaining a true level of professionalism throughout his time here," Sixers president of basketball operations Rod Thorn said. "We wish him the best of luck as he pursues future opportunities."

Nocioni was in the fifth year of a six-year contract, earning $6.65MM this season. The team held a $7.5MM option for 2012/13 which it didn't intend to exercise. Nocioni's production declined over the course of the contract, to the point where he only appeared in 56 minutes over 11 games this season, scoring a total of 17 points.

Agent Claudio Villanueva told Noticias de Alava before the move that he thought there was a good chance his client would return to Europe when he and the Sixers officially parted ways (via Sportando).

Sixers Allow Nocioni To Explore Other Options

8:31pm: Nocioni is technically still on the team's active roster but will be allowed to look at other options in the NBA and overseas, coach Doug Collins told reporters (article from Associated Press).

"His official status is that I don't know if the paperwork is done, but we've worked out a deal with him to allow him to either go on with another team maybe, or if not, I talked to him last night, go to Argentina and get ready for the Olympics," Collins said.

8:13am: The 76ers bought out the contract of Andres Nocioni last night, a source tells Dei Lynam of CSNPhilly.com.  The forward could look to catch on with a team for the home stretch of the season or possibly return to his home country of Argentina.

Nocioni, 32, was making $6.65MM in the final year of his contract with a $7.5MM team option that clearly was not going to be exercised.  Nocioni played just 56 minutes across eleven games in 2011/12 for Philadelphia.

The Sixers acquired the Argentinian in June of 2010 from Sacramento along with Spencer Hawes for Samuel Dalembert.  For his career, Nocioni has averaged 10.5 PPG and 4.5 RPG in eight NBA seasons.

Odds & Ends: Richardson, Favors, Novak, Nocioni

After missing Monday night's game against the Bucks with chest pains, Magic guard Jason Richardson says he could be seeking a second opinion on what hopefully isn't too serious of an injury, according to Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel.

Here are a few other notes from around the league:

  • Jeremy Lin's been the at the center of the world these last couple of weeks, but the Knicks have seen other unlikely contributions throughout their roster. Most notably from fellow journeyman Steve Novak. The two played alongside one another in the D-league last February and the results were fantastic, writes Mark Viera of The New York Times.
  • The league has announced that due to Spurs center Tiago Splitter's right calf strain, Jazz forward Derrick Favors will replace him in this weekend's Rising Stars Challenge.
  • With Elton Brand held out of tonight's game against Memphis with a sprained right thumb, Sixers coach Doug Collins chose to name the seldom used Andres Nocioni his starting power forward. With Philadelphia's bench and depth serving as their main advantage throughout this shortened season, the decision to start Nocioni over Thaddeus Young shows Philadelphia's need to keep their rotation as normal as possible. Brand will be out through the All-Star break.
