Magic Sign B.J. Johnson To Two-Way Contract

After promoting Amile Jefferson to their standard roster on Friday, the Magic have filled their newly-opened two-way slot by signing B.J. Johnson to a two-way contract, the team announced today in a press release.

An undrafted guard of La Salle, Johnson was with the Magic for training camp and the preseason in 2018, then spent most of his rookie year playing for the Lakeland Magic, Orlando’s G League affiliate. He averaged 15.4 PPG, 5.0 RPG, and 1.4 SPG with a shooting line of .476/.444/.841 in 39 NBAGL games.

Johnson also had brief NBA auditions in 2018/19 with the Hawks, who signed him to a pair of 10-day contracts in March, and the Kings, who signed him for the final week of the regular season. The 23-year-old appeared in seven total regular season games for the two clubs, with Sacramento waiving him in July. He then signed another Exhibit 10 contract with Orlando in September and spent the preseason with the organization in preparation for reporting back to Lakeland this fall.

While Johnson still figures to spend most of his time with Lakeland this season, his two-way deal will give him more of an opportunity to shuttle back and forth between the NBA and G League as needed. He’ll be eligible to spend up to 42 days in the NBA until the NBAGL season ends in March.

The Magic now have 14 players on standard contracts and two on two-way contracts, leaving just one open spot on their roster.

Magic Waive Five Players

The Magic have cut down their roster in advance of opening night, announcing today in a press release that they’ve released guard Jon Davis, swingmen DaQuan Jeffries and B.J. Johnson, forward Vic Law, and big man Isaac Humphries.

All five players were training camp invitees on non-guaranteed contracts, so it’s not surprising that they’ve been cut. Still, the series of moves leaves Orlando with just 13 players on guaranteed standard contracts.

NBA rules require teams to carry at least 14 players on standard contracts, though teams can dip below that minimum for two weeks at a time.

ESPN’s Bobby Marks wrote earlier today that the Magic, who don’t have a ton of room below the luxury-tax threshold or hard cap, may alternate between carrying 13 and 14 players to start the regular season to meet those roster requirements while limiting their financial commitments.

In addition to their 13 players on standard contracts, Orlando is also carrying two players on two-way deals.

The Magic have signed free agent guard B.J. Johnson, the team announced today in a press release. According to Roy Parry of The Orlando Sentinel (via Twitter), it’s an Exhibit 10 contract for Johnson, who inked a similar deal with the club last fall.

After going undrafted out of La Salle in 2018, Johnson was with the Magic for training camp and the preseason, then spent most of his first professional season playing for the Lakeland Magic, Orlando’s G League affiliate. He averaged 15.4 PPG, 5.0 RPG, and 1.4 SPG with a shooting line of .476/.444/.841 in 39 NBAGL games.

The Magic now have a full 20-man offseason roster, including just 13 players on fully guaranteed contracts. Although the team probably won’t carry a 15th man due to tax concerns, the 14th roster spot is up for grabs. Johnson could be in the mix for that spot, but seems more likely to eventually return to Lakeland, where he’d earn an Exhibit 10 bonus worth up to $50K if he spends two months with the club.

Kings Waive Swingman B.J. Johnson

The Kings have waived swingman B.J. Johnson, according to a team press release.

Johnson had a non-guaranteed salary of $1,416,852 for 2019/20.

Johnson played on the Kings’ summer league team, averaging 7.3 PPG in 16.9 MPG. The 6’7” Johnson, who went undrafted out of La Salle, appeared in seven NBA games with Atlanta and Sacramento last season, averaging 3.3 PPG in 7.0 MPG. Johnson played with the Hawks on a pair of 10-day contracts before the Kings added him late in the season.

He spent most of his first professional season playing for the Lakeland Magic in the G League. He averaged 15.4 PPG, 5.0 RPG, and 1.4 SPG with a shooting line of .476/.444/.841 in 39 NBAGL games.

Sacramento now has 13 players with guaranteed contracts and two with non- or partially-guaranteed deals, along with a pair of two-way players. The Kings reached an agreement with former University of San Diego forward Isaiah Pineiro earlier in the day.

NBA G League Assignments/Recalls: 4/3/19

The Warriors have recalled rookie wing Jacob Evans from the G League, the team announced today in a press release. The Santa Cruz Warriors’ season is over after they were eliminated in the Western semifinal, so Evans should be back with Golden State for the rest of the season.

The Kings have recalled recently-signed shooting guard B.J. Johnson from the G League, the team announced today in a press release (Twitter link via Jason Jones of The Athletic). With their own G League affiliate done for the season, the Kings sent Johnson to his old team, the Lakeland Magic, for Tuesday’s semifinal vs. Long Island. Despite Johnson’s 22 points and 11 rebounds, Lakeland lost and was eliminated from the NBAGL playoffs, so the 23-year-old should stick with Sacramento for the rest of the season.
The Nets have recalled rookie forward Dzanan Musa from the G League after Tuesday’s semifinal, the team announced today (via Twitter). The NBAGL Finals are set to begin on Sunday, so Musa seems like a good bet to rejoin Long Island for that best-of-three series.

Kings Sign B.J. Johnson

2:19pm: In their announcement officially confirming Johnson’s signing, the Kings added that he’ll be assigned to the Lakeland Magic, Orlando’s affiliate. That move will allow Johnson to continue his NBAGL playoff run with Lakeland.

11:09am: After signing a pair of 10-day contracts with Atlanta earlier this year, rookie swingman B.J. Johnson will finish the 2018/19 season with another NBA team. According to Jason Jones of The Athletic (via Twitter), the Kings are signing Johnson for the rest of the season. NBA.com’s official transactions log confirms that the move was finalized on Monday.

Johnson, who went undrafted out of La Salle in 2018, has spent most of his first professional season playing for the Lakeland Magic in the G League. He averaged 15.4 PPG, 5.0 RPG, and 1.4 SPG with a shooting line of .476/.444/.841 in 39 NBAGL games, earning him an NBA shot with the Hawks.

Over the span of 20 days in Atlanta, the 23-year-old appeared in six games, averaging 3.5 PPG and 1.3 RPG in limited minutes (7.2 MPG).

The Kings had an open spot on their 15-man roster after Cody Demps‘ 10-day deal expired, so no corresponding move is necessary to create room for Johnson, who figures to earn a rest-of-season minimum salary worth just over $47K. There’s no indication yet that his new contract includes any form of team option for 2019/20.

Jones adds that the Kings intend to immediately assign Johnson to the G League so he can resume playing in the postseason. However, Sacramento’s own affiliate – the Stockton Kings – has been eliminated from the NBAGL playoffs, and it’s not clear that assignment rules would allow the Kings to send him back to his old team in Lakeland. We’ll wait for official word on Johnson’s status.

B.J. Johnson Returns To G League

B.J. Johnson, whose second 10-day contract with the Hawks expired on Friday, has rejoined the Magic‘s G League affiliate, tweets Adam Johnson of 2 Ways and 10 Days.

The Lakeland Magic added Johnson to take the place of Anthony Brown, who suffered a season-ending injury. Johnson spent most of the year in Lakeland before getting the opportunity with Atlanta, averaging 15.4 PPG and 5.1 RPG in 39 G League games. Lakeland’s regular season ended last night, but Johnson will be eligible for the playoffs.

After going undrafted out of LaSalle, Johnson signed an Exhibit 10 contract with Orlando in September, but was waived before the season began. The rookie swingman appeared in six games during his time with the Hawks, averaging 3.5 points and 1.3 rebounds per night. He earned $47,371 in each of his 10-day deals.

Hawks Sign B.J. Johnson To Second 10-Day Deal

Rookie swingman B.J. Johnson is officially back under contract with the Hawks, with the club announcing today in a press release that Johnson has signed a second 10-day contract.

Johnson first signed with Atlanta on March 1, with that 10-day deal expiring overnight on Sunday. His new 10-day pact will run through next Thursday (March 21), at which point the Hawks will have to determine whether to let him go or re-sign him for the rest of the season.

Johnson, who went undrafted out of La Salle in 2018, spent most of his first professional season playing for the Lakeland Magic in the G League. He averaged 14.9 PPG, 5.1 RPG, and 1.4 SPG with a shooting line of .473/.433/.838 in 38 NBAGL games, earning him an NBA shot in Atlanta.

In his first four NBA games with the Hawks, Johnson has averaged 4.3 PPG and 2.0 RPG in 9.8 minutes per contest. He has shot well in a very small sample size, recording a .538 FG% and .500 3PT%.

With Johnson officially back on the roster, the Hawks once again have a full 15-man squad. However, only 13 of those players are on full-season or multiyear contracts. Tyler Zeller is the other player on a 10-day deal.

Johnson’s new 10-day contract will be worth the same amount as his first one: $47,371.

Hawks Sign B.J. Johnson To 10-Day Contract

MARCH 1: The signing is official, the Hawks announced in an email.

FEBRUARY 26: The Hawks will fill the final opening on their 15-man roster by signing G League shooting guard B.J. Johnson to a 10-day contract, reports Chris Vivlamore of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. According to Vivlamore, the club will make the move official later in the week.

Johnson, who went undrafted out of La Salle in 2018, joined the Magic for training camp and the preseason last fall, and then was waived by Orlando before the regular season began. He subsequently headed to the G League and has spent the 2018/19 campaign playing for the Lakeland Magic, Orlando’s affiliate.

In 37 games (30 starts) for Lakeland, Johnson has recorded 14.8 PPG, 5.1 RPG, and 1.4 SPG with a shooting line of .464/.426/.837.

Although the Hawks are carrying 14 players for now, Jordan Sibert‘s 10-day contract will expire this Friday night, so the club could open up a roster spot even after signing Johnson. Re-signing Sibert and officially adding Johnson would keep the 15-man squad full for the time being.

Magic Waive B.J. Johnson, Sign John Petrucelli

3:49pm: The Magic have officially signed Petrucelli and waived Johnson, the club confirmed in a press release.

12:51pm: The Magic are making a pair of procedural roster moves, according to Josh Robbins of The Athletic, who reports (via Twitter) that the club will sign John Petrucelli and waive B.J. Johnson. Both players are expected to ultimately end up with the Lakeland Magic, Orlando’s G League affiliate, Robbins adds.

Petrucelli, a 6’4″ guard, spent last season with the Magic’s G League squad, averaging 8.3 PPG and 4.0 RPG in 43 games (20.9 MPG). Lakeland holds his returning NBAGL rights, but signing him to an Exhibit 10 contract and then cutting him will allow Orlando to give him a bonus worth up to $50K, which won’t affect the club’s salary cap.

As for Johnson, he completed his college career this past spring before joining the Magic for training camp. In his senior year at La Salle, the 6’7″ shooting guard recorded 20.8 PPG and 8.3 RPG, earning Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors.

Orlando’s roster will remain at the 20-man preseason limit once the team officially finalizes both of these moves.
