Mavericks Announce 2025/26 Coaching Staff

The Mavericks have officially confirmed head coach Jason Kidd‘s staff for the 2025/26 season, making the announcement in a press release (via Twitter).

Here are the new hires, all of whom are assistant coaches:

  • Former Pacers, Magic, Lakers and Suns head coach Frank Vogel will be Kidd’s top assistant, with an official title of associate head coach (our story). Vogel, who won a title as the Lakers’ top coach in 2020, was a coaching consultant for Dallas last season.
  • Jay Triano, a veteran assistant who spent the past three years with Sacramento and had prior head coaching jobs with Toronto and Phoenix. He will reportedly be the No. 2 assistant under Kidd.
  • Ex-NBA forward Popeye Jones, who played with Kidd for two years in Dallas, is another new assistant. Since transitioning to coaching in 2007, Jones has spent time the Mavericks as a player development coach (2007-10) and with the Nets (2010-13), Pacers (2013-20), Sixers (2020-21), and Nuggets (2021-25) as an assistant. The 55-year-old will reportedly be the No. 3 assistant and focus on defense.
  • Phil Handy, a former Cavaliers, Raptors and Lakers assistant. Handy’s teams have won three championships during his coaching career (one apiece with Cleveland, Toronto and Los Angeles).
  • Mike Penberthy, a former professional player who has had NBA coaching jobs with the Wolves, Pelicans, Lakers and — most recently — the Nuggets. Penberthy is known as a shooting specialist and has drawn praise from star big man Anthony Davis.
  • Dru Anthrop, who most recently was an assistant on Vogel’s staff in Phoenix during the 2023/24 campaign. Anthrop was previously a video coordinator with the Magic, Grizzlies and Lakers (he also had a player development role in L.A.).
  • Jordan Sears is rejoining the Mavericks after spending the past two years as head coach of their G League affiliate, the Dallas Legends. He was the Mavs’ head video coordinator from 2021-23 and was a video intern and assistant video coordinator with Milwaukee from 2019-21.

Eric Hughes, Josh Broghamer and Keith Veney will return as assistant coaches, per the announcement.

Mavericks Notes: Jones, Prosper, Broghamer, Handy, Russell

The Mavericks have shown interest in re-signing big man Kai Jones, according to Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.com, but they’ll have to perform some roster gymnastics to make that happen.

The Mavericks will have 16 players on standard contracts once they re-sign Dante Exum, who was a higher priority for Dallas’ front office than Jones. The former Hornets center appeared in a dozen games with Dallas after the Clippers waived him at the beginning of March.

Olivier-Maxence Prosper is considered to have the most tradable contract among the Mavericks’ expendable margin players, Afseth adds. He’s earning about $3MM in 2025/26 and isn’t owed any guaranteed money beyond the coming season.

We have more on the Mavericks:

  • Josh Broghamer will coach the Mavs’ Summer League team, a roster that includes top pick Cooper Flagg, Afseth reports. Jared Dudley has coached the Summer League team in recent years, but appears on the verge of finding work elsewhere.
  • Updating his own report that Phil Handy is a candidate for the Mavericks’ coaching staff, Marc Stein tweets that the Knicks also have interest in Handy for Mike Brown‘s new staff in New York. Handy worked for Brown with the Lakers and Cavaliers.
  • After Stein mentioned Mike Penberthy as a potential target for the Mavericks’ staff on Wednesday, Afseth classifies the Mavs’ interest in the veteran assistant as “serious,” labeling him a strong candidate to join Jason Kidd‘s staff. Penberthy, who was an assistant alongside Kidd with the Lakers during their championship season, is known as a shooting coach and has earned praise from Mavericks star Anthony Davis for helping him improve as a shooter, Afseth adds.
  • The Mavs were looking for a player to bridge the gap until Kyrie Irving returns from his knee injury and D’Angelo Russell can fit the bill, Christian Clark of The Athletic writes. Russell is coming off one of his worst seasons but he played well for the Lakers the previous year. Russell agreed to a two-year deal in the $12MM range, a very reasonable price for a rotation player.

Mavericks Make Three Additions To Coaching Staff

The Mavericks have added three assistants to their staff.

Alex Jensen, who had been with the Jazz since 2013, is leaving Utah to join Jason Kidd’s staff, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (Twitter link). Bryan Gates is also coming to Dallas as an assistant, Wojnarowski adds in another tweet. Josh Broghamer is another newcomer to Dallas, according to Marc Stein (Twitter link).

Jensen played a major role in Rudy Gobert‘s development, tweets Tim MacMahon of ESPN, noting that rookie big man Dereck Lively should “benefit tremendously” from Jensen’s tutelage.

Prior to his stint in Utah, Jensen was the first coach for the G League Canton Charge.

Gates spent the past two seasons as an assistant with the Suns under Monty Williams. He has also worked as an NBA assistant in Sacramento (2009-10 and 2016-19), New Orleans (2010-15) and Minnesota (2015-16 and 2019-21).

Broghamer comes over from the Cavaliers, where he served as the director of advance scouting and player development. He previously worked for the Bucks when Kidd was their head coach.

The Mavericks let go of three assistants after failing to make the playoffs, Callie Caplan of the Dallas Morning News notes. Lead offensive assistant Greg St. Jean, shooting coach Peter Patton and Quinton Crawford were not retained. Patton has since joined the Bulls’ staff, while Crawford wound up with the Suns.
