Suns Waive Ike Diogu, Solomon Jones
The Suns have waived Ike Diogu and Solomon Jones, reports Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic. Both were on non-guaranteed deals. Coro says the moves mean fellow camp invitees Diante Garrett and Luke Zeller will likely make the team, as Coro predicted earlier today. Phoenix has 15 players remaining on the roster, so they're down to the regular season limit.
The Warriors selected Diogu with the ninth overall pick in the 2005 draft, but traded him midway through his second season with the team, and he's been a journeyman ever since. He's averaged 6.0 points and 3.1 rebounds in parts of six NBA seasons, including a brief two-game stint with the Spurs last year, and also spent time playing in China and Puerto Rico during 2011/12.
Jones was the first camp invitee for the Suns this season after 21 total games with the Clippers and Hornets last year. The former second-round pick hasn't made much impact in his six seasons in the league, but he did notch career highs in points (5.5), rebounds (3.7) and minutes per game (17.8) last year.
Coro believes that the fact Zeller and Garrett would make only the rookie minimum salary of $473,604, almost half of the veteran's amount of $854,389 the Suns would owe Diogu and Jones, is playing a role in the club's decision on which of its camp invitees to keep for the regular season. Though the team is well below the salary cap, owner Robert Sarver is notorious for pinching pennies.
Pacific Notes: Suns, D12, Paul, Lakers, Fredette
Let's head to the west coast and round up a few of Tuesday's items out of the Pacific Division….
- After waiving Othyus Jeffers, the Suns have more difficult roster decisions ahead of them, according to Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic. Among those is deciding which big man to keep from a group that includes Ike Diogu, Solomon Jones, and Luke Zeller.
- Although it appears that the Lakers and Clippers are the overwhelming favorites to re-sign Dwight Howard and Chris Paul respectively next summer, the two stars could conceivably decide to team up on a team like the Hawks, says ESPN.com's Chris Broussard (Insider link).
- The Lakers likely wouldn't have Steve Nash, Jordan Hill, and others on this year's roster if it weren't for a handful of small trades in the past, as Ben Bolch of the Los Angeles Times explains.
- Jimmer Fredette's stock has fallen since he was selected 10th overall in the 2011 draft, but he's showing promise this preseason for the Kings, writes Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com. Sacramento has two more weeks to exercise its $2.44MM option on Fredette for 2013/14.
Solomon Jones To Sign With Suns
The Suns will add Solomon Jones to their training camp roster on a non-guaranteed deal, reports Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic. The 6'10" Jones spent time with the Clippers and Hornets last season. He will likely receive the minimum salary if he makes the regular season roster.
New Orleans had Jones on a pair of 10-day contracts last season after the Clippers waived him in February, but the Hornets opted against signing him for the rest of 2011-12 and went with Jeff Foote on a 10-day contract instead. He saw 17.8 minutes per game in New Orleans, more than he got at any other stop, and averaged 5.5 points and 3.7 rebounds, both of which would have been career highs for a season. His time in L.A. was less fruitful, as he put up just 0.6 PPG and 1.7 RPG in 9.6 MPG.
The Suns have 13 players on 13 fully guaranteed contracts, so Jones is the first make-good deal for the team this year, as Coro points out. NBA teams can have 15 players in the regular season, but they don't have to carry more than 13, so Jones isn't a lock to stick with the Suns beyond camp, even though it appears he stands a decent chance.
Central Notes: Jones, Pacers, Bulls, Cavs
The Bucks may be open to offers on Andrew Bogut, and the Bulls have been "quietly deliberating" whether to make a play for Dwight Howard. Those are a couple of the more intriguing rumors we've heard out of the Central Division today. Now let's take a look at a few more under-the-radar stories:
- The Pacers could look into signing Solomon Jones for help at center, tweets Mike Wells of the Indianapolis Star. The Hornets declined to sign Jones for the rest of the season when his second 10-day contract expired, agreeing to a 10-day deal with Jeff Foote instead.
- Sam Smith of Bulls.com fields reader questions in his Friday mailbag, discussing Richard Hamilton, Carlos Boozer, and plenty of Bulls trade possibilities.

Only one Southwest team is in action tonight, as Dirk Nowitizki and the Mavericks take on Steve Nash and the Suns in Phoenix. To make up for the lack of games, let's take a look at a few Thursday links out of the Southwest:
- Based on calls he's received and reports he's read, Jerome Solomon of the Houston Chronicle concludes the Lakers are "floating the idea" that a package of Kyle Lowry and Luis Scola could get Pau Gasol to Houston. Solomon says there's no way the Rockets would do such a deal though.
- Solomon Jones' second 10-day contract has expired, and the Hornets have decided not to sign him for the rest of the season, reports John Reid of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Jones played in 11 games for New Orleans, averaging 5.6 points and 3.7 rebounds in 17.8 minutes per contest.
- Lamar Odom and Mavericks owner accused New York media of blowing their alleged spat out of proportion, writes Dwain Price of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Odds & Ends: Bulls, Nets, Kings, Hornets, Celtics
After a slow start in the early minutes, the Heat had little trouble dealing with the Nets at home. Chris Bosh was back in action tonight and put up 20 points off of 9-14 shooting en route to Miami's 108-78 blowout win. Here's a look at some items from around the Association on this Tuesday night..
- With Richard Hamilton set to return soon, Sam Smith of Bulls.com doesn't think the Bulls need to make a deal to fill the veteran's shoes.
- Nets general manager Billy King still intends to be active at the March 15 trade deadline even with center Brook Lopez sidelined for the next three weeks, writes Colin Stephenson of the Star-Ledger. Stephenson points out that Mehmet Okur, DeShawn Stevenson, Kris Humphries, Sundiata Gaines, Shelden Williams and the injured Damion James all own expiring contracts.
- The Sacramento City Council is expected to approve a plan to give the Kings a new arena and subsequently retain the franchise, according to Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com (via Twitter). The meeting is still in progress.
- With Emeka Okafor still out indefinitely with a sore left knee, Hornets Coach Monty Williams says there is a good chance center Solomon Jones will be signed for the remainder of the season, writes John Reid of The Times Picayune. In ten games with New Orleans, Jones has averaged 6.1 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest.
- Kevin McHale was literally in the shoes of the Celtics' current Big Three near the end of his Hall of Fame career with the C's, writes A. Sherrod Blakely of CSNNE.com. The Rockets coach told reporters that he believes 2012's Big Three is playing better than himself, Larry Bird, and Robert Parish towards the end of their time in Boston.

Southwest Notes: Grizzlies, Mavericks, Jones
In a piece for HoopsWorld, Jason Fleming examines five teams, debating whether they'd be better off rebuilding or simply retooling. For the Mavericks, Fleming recommends a complete rebuild, but he believes the rival Spurs just need to retool. Here are a few more items out of the Southwest Division:
- The Grizzlies may make a trade before March 15th, but don't feel the pressure they have in past seasons to get something done. "We've talked to teams, and we'll continue to talk," GM Chris Wallace told Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "The frequency of these discussions will get ratcheted up over the next two weeks. But I don't have a deal we would do today. I don't feel like we have to do a deal."
- Even though the Mavericks are committed to their offseason plans, that doesn't necessarily mean they have to stand pat at the trade deadline, says Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News.
- Solomon Jones is hoping to follow in Lance Thomas' footsteps rather than Donald Sloan's, as he tells John Reid of the Times-Picayune. The Hornets signed Thomas for the remainder of the season after giving him a pair of 10-day contracts, but let Sloan go after his second 10-day deal expired.
Hornets Re-Sign Lance Thomas, Solomon Jones
The Hornets have re-signed Lance Thomas and Solomon Jones, the team announced last night. Thomas, who had already received two 10-day contracts, will be signed for the remainder of the season, while Jones received his second 10-day deal.
Thomas, who signed the league's first 10-day contract this season, also becomes the first player to have his contract guaranteed for the remainder of the season following two 10-day deals. As we outlined earlier this month in our 10-day contract primer, teams are only permitted to sign players to two 10-day contracts (not necessarily consecutively) before being required to sign them for the rest of the season or part ways.
Thomas has appeared in 11 games for the Hornets, averaging 2.3 points and 3.0 rebounds in 9.1 minutes per game. Jones, meanwhile, has played in five games, posting 3.4 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks in just under 15 minutes per contest.
John Reid of the New Orleans Times-Picayune first reported that both frontcourt players were expected to be re-signed.
Odds & Ends: Thomas, Jones, Miles, Howard
With the All-Star Game about to kick off in Orlando, here are some other things going on around the league:
- After signing Lance Thomas to a couple of 10-day contracts, league sources have confirmed that the New Orleans Hornets will now sign the forward for the remainder of the season, according to John Reid at the Times Picayune.
- Reid also indicates that the Hornets will offer big man Solomon Jones his second 10-day contract this year. Both of these moves will be announced later this week.
- Utah Jazz forward C.J. Miles discussed his upcoming free agent status with Brian Smith of the Salt Lake Tribune. Miles indicates that while he will explore his options, he is definitely open to re-signing with the Jazz.
- Smith also talked to Jazz forward Josh Howard, who like Miles, will also consider re-signing with Utah.
Hornets Sign Solomon Jones To 10-Day Contract
The Hornets have officially signed Solomon Jones to a 10-day contract, the team announced today.
Jones was cut by the Clippers last week before the team had to guarantee his contract for the season. Coming into the year, the 27-year-old had averaged 10.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per 36 minutes in his career, though in ten games with the Clips his averages were down to 2.3 and 6.4 respectively. The Hornets will be the fourth NBA team for the 6'10" South Florida product, who was drafted by the Hawks and also spent time with the Pacers.
HoopsHype first reported (via Twitter) that the Hornets would sign Jones to a 10-day contract.
