Warriors Sign, Release Jose Calderon

7:13 p.m.: Golden State has officially released Calderon, the team tweeted.

5:28pm: The Warriors have signed former Laker Jose Calderon, filling a promise to the veteran point guard, but he’s not expected to be with the team by the end of the day.

Golden State tweeted an announcement about the signing, which it pledged to Calderon when he agreed to a buyout with L.A. on Monday. However, after Kevin Durant suffered a knee injury Tuesday night that may keep him out for the rest of the season, the Warriors felt they needed a bigger player to take his place, so that roster spot will eventually go to Matt Barnes.

Golden State will waive Calderon later today to allow him to sign with another organization and still be eligible for the postseason. He will receive the guaranteed rest-of-the-season contract that he was originally promised and will go back on waivers for 48 hours. The Hawks are reportedly among the teams interested in signing Calderon once he clears waivers again.

Ridiculous comment. Cut a first round pick who is getting better by the game for a 35 year old at the end of his career who will barely get off the bench.

Fully agree with RenoChris. Warriors need guys like Looney who are developing their game on cheap contracts not vets. End of bench players aren’t going to really matter in playoffs anyways. Signing Matt Barnes is an exception because they need a 4 right now who plays with physicality since KD got injured.

Not exactly. Looney hasn’t shown anything to showcase him being anything other than a garbage time player. Given KD’s injury, the Warriors will need a lot of mix and matching so backup PG Livingston will see more time at the 2 and considering his injury history, you don’t want to press him that much. Calderon isn’t a world beater but can still be a serviceable backup.

  1. They are dead in the water without Durant. San Antonio will eat them alive without the Durantula. They sacrificed bench depth by signing him, and if he can’t go, it’s all bad for them.

I hope he goes back to the raptors. They could use a veteran playmaker that can shoot 3 ‘s while Lowry is out,and Jose is familiar with the coaches and core players.
