The Celtics will likely part ways with Tyler Zeller on Sunday, per a report from Mark Murphy of The Boston Herald (Twitter link).
The center’s $8MM salary for 2017/18 is set to become fully guaranteed tomorrow, so waiving him will certainly provide the team with greater cap flexibility as it looks to make a splash in free agency this summer. Boston won’t be on the hook for any of that amount if it does indeed make him an unrestricted free agent as Murphy’s sources suggest.
The 27-year-old appeared in 51 games last season, including five starts, and averaged 3.5 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.8 assists in 10.3 minutes per outing. His shooting line for the campaign was .494/.000/.564.

Any chance the contract ends up being used in a trade?
You never know, but Zeller would have to agree to postpone the guarantee date for it to be a useful trade chip, since no trades can be completed until Thursday.
Right I forgot about that. And he seems unlikely to agree to that since he won’t have much of a market to begin with.

I’m not sure Ainge waited so much as he didn’t overpay. Most likely teams want more and unrealistic deals from the celtics because they have so much to offer. Kudos to him for being patient even though it’s frustrating as all hell
For sure, but I was more referring to last year and a potential Paul George deal. Indiana got the best player back of the 3 best offers I think they could have got, so maybe they take that over the better value/assets Boston could have offered, and the multiple young guards/wings and shooter/cap space Miami could offer
But I have contended both boston and miami were waiting on a Hayward decision before looking to move for PG. The deal got done before then. Based on the info that came out, it’s probabLe that’s what Boston tried to do
