Marcin Gortat Announces Retirement

Former NBA center Marcin Gortat confirmed his retirement from basketball in an interview with TVP Info (hat tip to Eurohoops.net).

“It’s time to end my career,” Gortat said. “I think this is the moment when the year has passed – as I said at the beginning, I give myself a year [off] to see what life will bring me – and it brought me to this decision, that I am going to retire, I’m finishing my professional playing.”

The Polish native played 12 NBA seasons, spending most of his time with the Magic, Suns and Wizards. His career ended when the Clippers waived him before the end of the 2018/19 season. He reportedly had a chance to play in Poland last month, but turned it down because of health concerns.

After being taken with the 57th pick in the 2005 draft, Gortat went on to appear in 806 NBA games. He averaged 9.9 PPG and 7.9 RPG for his career.

I once saw him on the cover of Polish Playboy in a Polish deli in Baltimore.

What’s with the lack of “congratulations on a great career and all the best in retirement?” Mr. Dierkes has to put these basketball writers through boot camp.

Let us remember that Gortat was the 57th pick in the 2005 NBA Draft and ended up playing over 800 NBA games. He finished in the top 20 in the NBA in rebounding 5 times and made approximately $95 million in his NBA career. An overwhelmingly successful career by any measure. Congratulations to Marcin on his retirement.

this dude played in nba 12 years, made over 95M (7.91 per year… that sum is more then 99% of Americans will make in their life) and he’s got ‘Larry’ talking about rings, like Gortat has any true voice in him not winning a ring, played for busted Orlando & sorry ass Wizards. Every nba franchise would cream their shorts if they drafted #57 and got Gortat fir 12 years.
