Grizzlies star Ja Morant limped out of the arena after injuring his right knee late in tonight’s game, tweets Jared Greenberg of TNT. Doctors examined Morant following the game, but the results haven’t been announced.
The injury appeared to happen on a play where Warriors guard Jordan Poole was swiping at the ball and grabbed Morant’s knee instead. Morant didn’t talk to reporters, but he sent out a tweet with a video link to the play and the message “broke the code,” a reference to what Golden State coach Steve Kerr said about Dillon Brooks after his flagrant foul injured Gary Payton II in Game 2. That tweet was later removed.
In his postgame press conference, Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins said “it looks like Jordan Poole grabbed (Morant’s) knee and pulled it” (Twitter link from Chris Herrington of The Daily Memphian). Jenkins added that he will consult with general manager Zach Kleiman before determining whether to ask the league to review the play (Twitter link).
Morant’s teammates came to his defense after the game. Desmond Bane referred to the play as a “controllable” situation and said that Poole “reached out and grabbed his knee and put (it in an awkward position). It’s unfortunate.” (Twitter link from Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN). Jaren Jackson Jr. added, “It’s unfortunate to see that type of stuff. But no one here is dirty. It’s unfortunate. You know the code. We’re going to talk about the code all series at this point.” (Twitter link from Marc J. Spears of Andscape).
Poole denied any wrongdoing, saying he was making “a basketball play” (video link from Mark Medina of USA Today). “I’m not even that kind of player,” Poole said. “I respect everybody. I hope he gets better.”

Clarke shot his FT right after that and stayed in the game with no injuries while Dray got ejected. Did I miss something where Clarke is out 3-5 weeks? Nope pretty sure Dray tried to do everything in his power after an accidental foul to keep him from falling hard. F1 for sure, borderline F2 especially in the playoffs.
Brooks made the most obvious textbook douchy bonehead F2 anyone except super MEM homers has ever seen. Look at every single other NBA player coach and commentators reaction to brooks close-lining a guy in the air on a play he had zero chance of making that has a super high probability of injury. See because the “Code” is about not intentionally injuring another player which it is borderline whether Brooks did, or was just so reckless it happened anyways!

I only just saw the play online, but having way too much experience injuring both of my knees, it looked kind of like he could have got hurt when he was stopping, as it seemed like he came down kind of awkwardly…That being said, Poole clearly did grab his knee and pull it in a direction, and while that is dumb and should be either a technical foul or a flagrant 1, I dont think it’s how he got hurt, if he is hurt
Also if he is hurt, that really sucks. I have long talked about how much I think of Ja Morant, and to not have him out there hurts the game of basketball, in my opinion. So hopefully he’ll be ok
That is not a flagrant! Read the rules on flagrant fouls. That is a common foul where he obviously was scrambling and grabbing for the ball. Dude hurt it banging knees with Klay like 45sec before.

Its a basketball play, with no contact to the head or groin, nobody getting pulled down, and nobody being hit in the air thats just not an F1 Im sorry. Its a common foul at worst he doesnt even pull hard enough to pull him over when his balance was already compromised before the grab.
I think b/c of the way the nba has officiated things the last several years, people dont know what a flagrant foul is. Getting hit in the head or someone falling doesnt automatically make it a flagrant foul.

Its a common foul because he was making a play at the ball. Its not serious enough contact to warrant anything else. He tips the ball reaches again and grazes his knee. In no world is that an F1.
Making a play on the ball also doesnt have anything to do with anything…he definitely initially is trying to swipe for the ball, until he grabs Morants knee and tries to move his leg out of the way. This feels like it’s really important for you for the distinction to not be consided at least a technical foul, regardless of whether or not someone is trying to classify the play as dirty, which again isnt the case

Curry should have swung wider, though surely it was called a block bc thats what refs do. Maybe Morant threw his feet to the side awkwardly to get them there and Curry did not account for that. But Morant should not have to backtrack to avoid contact.

The prior subjective standards of punishment for hard fouls (based on intent) were replaced with the current Flagrant 1 and 2 rules to do precisely that. The calls in each of game 1 and 2 were officiated correctly consistent with those concepts. Short of dead ball fights or the like, there’s no longer a place for commissioner in these instances.
