1:30pm: The Newport Beach Police Department has issued an update, announcing that its investigation into the allegations against Giddey remains “active” and putting out a call for more information.
“The Newport Beach Police Department is actively seeking additional information related to these allegations and pursuing all leads and evidence to obtain the facts of the case,” the statements reads (Twitter link via Tim MacMahon of ESPN).
10:58am: The Newport Beach Police Department has opened an inquiry into the allegations against Thunder guard Josh Giddey in an attempt to assess the validity of the claims and determine whether any laws were broken, according to reports from TMZ Sports and Salvador Hernandez of The Los Angeles Times.
As Nolan Clay and Joel Lorenzi of The Oklahoman detail, a series of posts on social media last week accused Giddey of having an inappropriate relationship with an underage girl who is a student at Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach.
The NBA has confirmed that it’s investigating those claims, and now local police are looking into them as well.
According to The Oklahoman’s reporting, online court records put the Thunder guard in the Newport Beach area in July 2022, when he was ticketed for a pair of traffic violations. However, it’s not clear whether the allegations stem from that time – when Giddey would have been 19 – or if they’re based on a more recent incident.
The age of consent in California is 18. Giddey turned 21 last month.
Clay and Lorenzi explain that a violation of consent laws in California is considered a misdemeanor if the perpetrator and the minor are within three years of age. Otherwise, it can be charged as either a misdemeanor or a felony.
The latest reporting from TMZ Sports indicates that the alleged minor and her family have thus far been unwilling to cooperate with law enforcement officials in Newport Beach.
Giddey has remained active while the NBA and California police investigate the accusations. Asked on Tuesday ahead of the Thunder’s game vs. Minnesota about the police inquiry, head coach Mark Daigneault cut the reporter short and said he wouldn’t discuss “anything as it relates to Josh off the court” before confirming that Giddey would play vs. the Timberwolves.
Giddey finished with 10 points and six rebounds in 28 minutes on Tuesday. He was booed by the crowd in Minnesota every time he touched the ball.
Giddey has a $40 million endorsement deal with an Australian cereal company. They have pulled him from ads pending more information.
That is a hefty chunk of change to lose.

There should be absolutely NO reason to have “No Comment”. You should be able to honestly answer that question without any problem with regard to whether or not you are involved in a relationship with a minor. There is no gray area here.

My guy, relax. It says the cops are “looking into allegations” that means they aren’t anywhere near ready to charge him with a crime. I heard he met her in a nightclub, if true then it means she used a fake ID to get into the club and likely looted about her age to Giddy. He wouldn’t really have a reason to or even the power to find out her real age, especially if it was just casual. Shoot I was messing with a 19 yo I took out of town with her “cousin”. She told me her cousin was older. Turned out she was younger. Like 16. Thank God I asked questions and challenged her before anything physical happened. She was untouchable after that. There is no relevance to your supposed argument. Fifteen year olds are legally children. The over 20’s are old enough to know better, and legally responsible for their actions.
Josh Giddey was 19 at the time. The girl was 17. A 2 year age difference should not be a crime. If the girl was 15 you might have a point. That said it is unlikely a 6’10” professional athlete would have much interest in a 15 year old. It is telling that the girl’s family is not talking to law enforcement. Whatever happened or didn’t the family is apparently unconcerned. My kids are in their 20’s now but if they had been 16 or 17 and showed up with a date that was 18 to 20 years old I’d have seen it as normal. I agree that 16 and 21 is a problem but don’t see a major problem with dating within the normal age range that teenagers do.
Do you know that multiple peer-reviewed studies conducted over decades have shown that over 90% of sexual abuse allegations are found to be true? Our base reaction should be to believe the survivor as default. Not immediately label things as “knee jerk” or cast doubt on allegations.

If everyone is innocent until proven guilty, why would I be asking too much of a company to continue to honor their agreement until the proceedings played out? Treating the victim as if they’re not lying is how you handle evidence, not how you discipline a currently innocent defendant as well
There was no sexual abuse here. The only thing in question was her age at the time. It is likely she was 16 or 17 at the time. Legal in most states. The Age difference is too small to be an issue.

Not grasping at straws. They are dealing with the difficulty of investigating a potential crime involving a minor in which the minor, AND the parents are not cooperating.

Not commenting Giddey at all (I know nothing about the case), but I am always amazed at the level of confidence that people have in law enforcement, especially when it comes to allegations against an athlete potentially committing a crime against a woman. It’s even more amazing when you look at law enforcement’s and the legal system’s utterly abysmal record of prosecuting sexual assault/rape/etc.
Two things can be true. Law enforcement in the US does not have a great track record when it comes to prosecuting sex crimes, and if a police department has enough evidence to charge a person with a crime they could do it.

First off I never said 15, I said 16-17 and I never said there were 20-21 year old seniors, I said 20-21 with 16-17 is the equivalent age difference of a senior with a freshman which no one would care about.
Secondly most states allow a 16 year old to consent, here in Florida it’s 16-24 with consent so Giddey’s situation would be entirely legal.
My whole point is legality and commonality to normal people that age of the situation, nothing to do with my life. I’m happily married and most my previous were older than me. She is over 16 and he was under 20 at the time. They are both older now. This sort of thing was normal when I was a teenager in the 80’s. Certainly not a crime. I get that laws have changed to protect kids. But in this case they both are and were kids.
Without actually having evidence in my hands there are 2 ways of looking at this…
1 – The most likely is he’s just another jock trying to live the culture and is paying the family well to keep quiet…
2 – The other is the family is holding out for a cash grab for any number of reasons… Including false accusations…
