The Wizards are looking to make major renovations to their arena and want public funding to pay for the majority of the bill.
Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which owns the Wizards as well as the NHL’s Capitals and WNBA’s Mystics, has asked D.C. for $600MM of public funding to renovate Capital One Arena, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports. That’s about 75% of the funds needed to carry out Monumental’s renovation plan. The remaining $200MM would be covered by Monumental, which is owned by chief executive Ted Leonsis.
We have more from the Southeast Division:
- Wizards wing Corey Kispert has an ankle sprain but it’s not severe, Josh Robbins of The Athletic tweets. While Kispert didn’t play on Friday, he’s not in a walking boot and the goal now is to reduce the swelling and let the ankle heal.
- In his latest mailbag, Roderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer says he doesn’t expect No. 2 pick and Hornets forward Brandon Miller to start in the near future. He notes that Gordon Hayward is an unlikely candidate to come off the bench, given his salary, and he’s the player Miller would have to replace in the lineup. The rookie’s versatility off the bench is also a factor, Boone adds.
- Given how much time he missed last season, LaMelo Ball isn’t surprised he’s off to a slow start offensively. The Hornets point man is shooting 30.5% from the field in four games. “I ain’t hoop in a minute, so it’s just conditioning and getting all that back and everything,” Ball told Boone. “But I feel all right. I feel like stuff is going to come back. I’m just keeping positive.” Ball signed a five-year max extension this summer.

Capital one is a dump. Needs renovation
Yeah but the team is a bigger one. Might want to start winning first before asking for 600M from the city
No tax payer money should be given to sports franchises. Done
It’s time to move on from Hayward. He was a great talent till he got hurt. Needs to come off the bench. To be more efficient and consistent. And prolong his career. Should be dealt this year.
These guys are paid so much. Fund it yourselves
So since they’re asking for money from the city to renovate… is the arena now dc owned?
If you own a sports team and require money to fund a new arena for said sports team you should relinquish ownership of said sports team…
It is time for people to take a real stand against Billionaire owners getting the general public to pay for their fancy new digs!!
At the very least, if public money is used with the claim that said development would provide a monetary boost for the surrounding community, there should be a binding agreement that allows a third-party to conduct an assessment a few years after the renovations would be complete. If that claim turns out to be untrue or exaggerated, the group should be forced to repay the difference.
Nice post shea , way to add some depth to a 2d convo that is painfully needed. Appreciate it
LaMelo needs to watch some Miami Heat video from this year of Tyler Herro. Herro is absolutely ballin right now, and is clearly on a mission rub Portland’s nose in it. If you are gambling take Herro’s Points, Rebounds, Assists total to go over EVERY night! He is on a mission to be named All-NBA this year.
LaMelo needs to find a mission to get on like Herro.
Lol. 35 trillion in debt and we are funding stadiums. Pathetic
‘I ain’t hoop in a minute.’
Any organization that has someone as the face of their franchise that can’t construct a proper sentence will never go anywhere. Man if I was the owner of the team, I would call in the entire front office, head coach and the illiterate athlete and sit them all down and let them all know their jobs are in the line and that I expect to hear every single person in the organization to speak professionally at all times and if they can’t figure it out, that I would have no problem cleaning house…..and it won’t take me but…..a minute.
This ain’t the National Scrabble League bruh
Trade Hayward then…. Surely plenty of teams would like his massive expiring deal and the fact he’s still somewhat useable and productive.
Julius Randle and Evan Fouriner for Gordan Hayward and PJ Washington ??
Randle has been crap, Washington can do his role and Hayward gives them another forward for depth while clearing Fouriner. Hornets get back veteran depth at SG in Fouriner aswell as an all nba, all star calibre player in Randle.
Ball Miller Randle that’s steps in the right direction and sounds like a decent basketball team.
