3:09pm: The trade is official, per announcements from the Pistons and Knicks.
The two second-rounders headed to Detroit in the deal will be 2028 and 2029 picks, tweets Fred Katz of The Athletic. Those picks will be New York’s own, according to Omari Sankofa II of The Detroit Free Press.
The Pistons didn’t officially announce any cuts in their press release, but previous reporting indicated they’re waiving Killian Hayes, Joe Harris, and the newly acquired Danuel House. Arcidiacono will likely also be released after being acquired from New York, per James L. Edwards III of The Athletic (Twitter link).
10:27am: The Pistons and Knicks are finalizing a trade that will send Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks to New York in exchange for Quentin Grimes, Evan Fournier, Malachi Flynn, Ryan Arcidiacono, and two second-round picks, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN (Twitter link).
Bogdanovic (41.5%) and Burks (40.1%) are two strong three-point shooters who will help bolster New York’s rotation, particularly when it comes to scoring and spacing the floor. Burks, 32, is an impending unrestricted free agent, while Bogdanovic’s $19MM salary for 2024/25 is only partially guaranteed for $2MM.
However, as Fred Katz of The Athletic tweets, the Knicks are expected to fully guarantee Bogdanovic’s contract for next season, possibly to flip him to a new team in the summer or during the ’24/25 season. Burks, meanwhile, was favorite of head coach Tom Thibodeau during his first stint in New York from 2020-22, Katz observes (via Twitter).
Once the deal is official, the Knicks will have two open roster spots and will be about $2.5MM below the luxury tax threshold, tweets ESPN’s Bobby Marks. They’ll have plenty of flexibility to sign players on the buyout market, Marks observes, since they’re well below the first tax apron.
Flynn cannot be aggregated with other salaries in a trade, but the outgoing contracts of Grimes, Fournier and Arcidiacono are just enough to cover the money owed to Bogdanovic and Burks. That means the Knicks will create a traded player exception worth $3,873,025, which is Flynn’s cap hit.
According to Ian Begley of SNY.TV (Twitter link), the Knicks were motivated to add depth on the wing in part due to concern over OG Anunoby‘s right elbow injury. As Begley notes, New York recently changed Anunoby’s injury status from elbow inflammation to bone spur irritation. Anunoby has missed the past five games with the injury and will miss his sixth straight contest tonight against Dallas.
As for the Pistons, they’ve been extremely active leading up to the 2:00pm CT deadline, and they will need to cut two players to complete this trade.
James Edwards III of The Athletic hears rival teams were unwilling to meet Detroit’s asking price for Bogdanovic, and the Pistons felt Grimes was more valuable than any picks being offered (Twitter link). According to Edwards, the Knicks “have been unwilling to trade firsts to any team,” with New York likely saving its draft arsenal to chase a star player in the future.
That reporting suggests the trade, from Detroit’s perspective, could be viewed as Bogdanovic for Grimes, with Burks netting two second-round picks.
Grimes, 23, is in the third season of his rookie scale contract, and was reportedly open to a change of scenery after having his role reduced in 2023/24. He showed plenty of 3-and-D upside last season, however, averaging 11.3 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists while frequently defending opposing teams’ top perimeter scorers. He’ll make $4.3MM next season and will be eligible for a rookie scale extension in the 2024 offseason.
While Grimes was a regular contributor for New York, Fournier, Flynn and Arcidiacono hardly played at all for the Knicks. Fournier has been openly seeking a trade for well over a year — his wish was finally granted, but it’s unclear if he’ll have a role for the Pistons. They’ll hold a $19MM team option on his contract for next season, which could be useful for salary-matching purposes in the future, if they decide to retain him.
Troy Weaver do something that makes sense challenge 2024
*IMPOSSIBLE*
OMG. No!!!! Grimes needed to stay. Poor Ryan A on the move again
Oh, Ryan won’t be on the move. He’s gonna get waived for sure.
What do you mean, have you seen how many points he has scored this year
My grade
Knicks A
Pistons F
They really couldn’t get a 1 for Bojan??? Questionable for Detroit.
Teams aren’t wanting to surrender 1st round picks. Can’t make them
Knicks have a few protected 1sts that aren’t worth much. Surprised the Pistons couldn’t get one of them.
A 1st rd pick has plenty of value. Talent pools today are deeper. Plenty of finds late 1st rd.
A late 1st has about as much value as a 2nd. Which is why teams pass them around like candy. Ask yourself why there are frequently late teen protections on 1sts that eventually convey to 2nds. Strap on your thinking cap for that one, Al.
Those firsts turn into seconds if the criteria isn’t met, and they way they’re situated, that’s what they’ll exactly be.
Bojan was injured most of the season so no.
I think Grimes is the best guy in the trade. So it is Grimes for whoever you think is most valuable between Bojan & Burks, then 2 2nds for the other.
Bojan helps you win now. Grimes isn’t there yet.
Probably true, but they could’ve kept Grimes and just traded one 2nd for someone similar in Dougie McBuckets. Then used Fournier for Brown or someone else with that large salary for next year that they wanted to keep in play.
Good trade for Knicks
Burks is Back Baby
bojan avergaing 20ppg, YOU DONT GET A 1ST???????????
with 40% 3pt cont
Literal negative defense, though. His defense has regressed incredibly.
He’s playing for Thibs now. If he doesn’t pick his defense up, his playing time will diminish, even if he was a splashy acquisition. See: Evan Fournier.
His defense on Indy and Utah was good. Playing on the last place Pistons, not much defense being played. That regression may just be a matter of playing for a poor defensive unit.
20ppg on a trash team and he missed most of the season so number is inflated due to less games.
Bogey wasn’t on a trash team when he was putting up 17-20 per season for the Jazz.
How did the Knicks get OG and Bogdanovic without sending any first round picks??
Pictures of other teams GMs engaging in some questionable behavior with some illicit substances and/or ladies of the night.
The players the Knicks sent to the Raptors were worth way more than any of their 1sts are worth. They have their own 1sts, a Milwaukee 1st (which if Giannis is still there won’t be worth much), and a Washington and a Detroit 1st, neither of which may even convey before becoming 2nds. The Dallas 1st is probably the most valuable and it will be a mid-round in a supposedly weak draft.
Leon Rose got something on Troy. He keeps eating salaries for the Knicks.
Troy Weaver is trying to get himself fired at this point. No way.
Can’t wait for the ludicrous mental gymnastics from Pistons fans trying to justify this putrid move lol
Great move for the Knicks, IMO. They get their bench initiator in Burks, one of the best shooting wings in the league who also has that 20 mil contract to potentially match salaries in a star trade in the next season or so, and kept all their first rounders – while losing one rotation player who is currently injured. Love this move.
There are two Alec Burks. The microwave version who shoots over 40% from 3 and makes nice cuts and the old toaster version who can’t shoot 40% from any where on the court and stands around waiting for catch and shoot plays.
I was referring to Bojan as one of the best shooting wings in basketball, and regardless both guys are going to get considerably more open looks playing in NY than Detroit. For what the deal cost, they really don’t need to do a ton to break even on value.
In Leon we trust!!!
If there was a first rounder out there they would have gotten it. Fans always overestimate trade values and are shocked when those overestimations don’t come true.
The Raptors just gave up a first rounder for Kelly Olynyk and Ochai Agbaji. Hornets got a first for Rozier. Teams reportedly haven’t placed high value on 24 first rounders due to the talent pool available.
They’re out there, and considering the Knicks have two firsts in this draft it’s especially surprising they didn’t surrender at least their own late first for this package. When you factor in Detroit turning down two first rounders for Bogdanovic previously, this trade looks even worse.
One entry-level contract season of Quentin Grimes and two seconds. Not great.
Grimes is a really good player who has been pushed down because of where he fits in the Knicks system. He started on a play-in team for over a year. If he starts for Detroit, and they get him the ball, he could be an 18 ppg guy playing exceptional D.
I don’t know, he’s not a great movement shooter, finisher or creator. He’s solid in transition and he’s generally been a great catch-and-shoot guy but even that’s declined this year. I can see him being an elite 3 and D wing at some point but I can’t see him ever getting a role as even a tertiary option on a good team – this coming from a huge Grimes fan going all the way back to Kansas.
Grimes’ a clear SF shooting upgrade over the Thompson twin whose building a house with his bricks.
Grimes should get heavy minutes. BB and Burks minutes plus the minutes Joe Harris never played. Another great trade by Troy Weaver.
We liked him in NY. Thanks for the good times, Grimes.
Grimes’ best position is definitely SG – he struggles against bigger, stronger wings at times and isn’t a good rebounder – and fits pretty well next to Thompson in theory.
The last thing he needs in order to reach his potential is playing him out of position and forcing him to be the only positive defensive presence in the starting lineup from 1-4.
The Pistons are going to have to cut like a bunch of existing players to take on all these new players. Morris trade +1 player, Knicks trade +2 players, House trade +1 player. Detroit has to cut players to make room for all these incoming players.
Ryan Arcidiacono never played for the Knicks, and surely will be released. Thibs likes him on the bench (he’s good at calling 3 second violations) and will probably resign him once that happens.
Not true. Arci played garbage minutes in over 25 games so far this year.
They are now 4 over the roster limit. Who are they releasing?
My guess is Harris, Gallo, Wiseman, Hayes. They might also just send any of these players to a team for a top-55 protected pick.
I find amusing the concept of the “top-55 protected second round pick”, also called before, according to the NBA.com player pages, “conditional second-round pick”. It’s a concept shrouded in mystery, with a thing that actually means to have no value, but even that, Is not a full 0% chance, while also alluding to the catacombs of the NBA draft, an abyss where you can Find from a guy who was a standout college player, to minor leagues legends, to undersized scoring machines that aré 6 feet or below, to giant behemoth projects 7’1 and taller, to a variety of draft AND Stash players, to incredible cases (search Tanguy Ngombo), to incredible names (Ater Majok), to Hall of Famers, basketball legends like Luis Scola and Manu Ginóbili. I will.write a fantasy story about this concept and share it for the HR community, the basketball world, and the non basketball world
Ryan Arcidiacono will be cut, close to 100% probability. Knicks likely will resign him. This is the strange purpose of Ryan Arcidiacono.
Can the Knicks even re-sign Arc if he’s let go by the Pistons??
Yes.
Sure? I dont think so
No they cannot
Pistons gonna see Fournier start to score like Bogdan has in Detroit and trade him for something later on.
I doubt they pick up his option. He’ll be a free agent at the end of the year.
They won’t be able to trade him later on unless they pick up his option. You really think they’re going to pick up his option?
Oh not at all
Wiseman and Hayes for Luke Kennard and Jake L. Wiseman to Toronto. Wiseman to NOP or Washington. Free Wiseman. You let Knox go so do Wiseman a favor
Gonna miss Grimes.
Our new Fournier for next year. A contract that can be moved. At least there will be the level of consistency that Fournier couldn’t deliver and the instant offense off the bench when needed.
Cautiously optimistic, padam!
We have to be. Too often have we been disappointed in the end. If Bogdon is truly acquired from what I’m hearing, I think we’re in good shape. When healthy, the bench is going to be hard to beat by other teams and Thibs can have everyone go full throttle.
Wiseman to Toronto, Memphis, Washington, NOP.
Wiseman and Hayes for Trent and Temple.
Wiseman and Hayes for Luke Kennard and Jake L.
Wiseman for D Wright.
Wiseman for Larry Nance
More like Wiseman bought out or released. No team is trading a player unless its somebody they don’t use for Wiseman since Pistons never play him.
I don’t want to see that. I want to see Wiseman and Hayes to Toronto for Trent and Temple
Man, I love Grimes and I really think he can become a solid starter in this league, but that wasn’t gonna happen with us. Burks and Bogdanovic are a amazing return for him! Absolute love for this trade!
Burks seems like a rental, Bogdanovic about to turn 35. All in type move for this season, I like Knicks depth though.
All in in that sense, sure. But given the relatively limited cost involved, it’s exactly the type of all in move a team like the Knicks should make. Good trade for them.
I like this for NY. I hope Bojan doesn’t get benched like Evan. Ryan A the league leader in points to Detroit!!!!!!!! Keep him!!!. Waive Troy Brown, Shake Milton, Ryan A, Flynn.…..
Waive Troy Weaver.
Wow, great move for the Knicks.
Picking up two guys that can be key contributors to a conference finals run or better without giving up a 1st and only one rotation player (Grimes) is a win to me.
I liked Grimes also, but to be concerned that the Knicks gave him up for these two guys is crazy. Burks is an upgrade on Grimes, and Bogey is a huge upgrade over everyone else that was traded here.
Troy Weaver for Executive of the Year. I’m pretty sure the other 29 GM’s in the league would vote him that!
I’ll give him exec of the year or very close.
Damn knicks are owning trades this year… They got defense and more scoring punches from everywhere.
Now Grimes can get tons of shots off with no pressure for the pistons.
Thought for sure it would be Brown.
Getting both tells me. They are going to fight this year. Knicks are deepest team in NBA with everyone healthy.
It’s all about playoffs and next yr now. Definitely got more scoring for bench.
I like it …….
Al, does this mean no more weekly hypothetical trades for DDR to NYC???
It’s not Al’s fault, though. DeRozan would have been a great add. But the Bulls think they’re contenders and won’t trade him.
Tell me honesty. DeM starting at SG. Is not a better team. I think so .
Brown likely to magic, kings or mavs.
Finally the DDR Al has been lobbying for is finally over and done. Plus this comment is laughable “Knicks are deepest team in NBA with everyone healthy”. I think it’s a delusional comment to make, but that’s Al for you. The Celtics and Denver may have something to say about that comment. LMAO!!!
@Flybynight: Nuggets are a better team, but Knicks are deeper to me. Denver is carried by their starters with a weak bench. ‘Deep’ means having a good bench. At least that’s how I interpret it.
Tell mehow they are deeper. Please help me …..
IMO the trade is great but I would have traded a first round pick instead of Grimes. Everyone keeps saying Mikal or Booker definitely not coming to MSG so who are the Knicks saving all those picks for? Does Spida work in the same back court with Brunson? Who are the Knicks saving those picks for??
We won’t know till we see who’s available. If Mitchell doesn’t resign. Someone will be out there. These playoffs will be fun.
Any Knicks fan think CP3 coming for a buy out?
I’d sign him why not. Dolan would want the attention for Knicks.
I thought this
Poor trade for the NYK, even if it helps us this year. Up until now this FO has avoided these kinds of short-sighted deals that doomed their predecessors. Although, trading our last RSC player (Grimes) for two fossils from one of the worst teams in NBA history would be pretty bad even by the standards of the latter. Hopefully, these old guys can stay on the court at least this year so we get something for Grimes.
They literally gave up all the trash on the bench and no 1st round picks….deepest team in the league now they now have depth to let Randle and OG heal properly for the post season run and not lose a ton of production
Trash and SRPs are the standard price for rentals. Not a guy like Grimes (the best asset in the deal by a wide margin). Exercising BB’s option to use him in a trade for a star next year sounds good, but teams trading stars don’t settle just for picks and expirings, they want good young starter caliber players on RSC deals as part of the package. We now don’t have any.
Grimes had a huge opportunity this year and showed little. He’s about to turn 24 and will be an RFA after next season. He wasn’t much of a contributor to this team and he wasn’t going to be a big part of a future trade.
If potential trade partners want young controllable players they can get other teams involved. They still have a ton of picks, this trade won’t hamper them in the future.
“Grimes (the best asset in the deal by a wide margin)”
Bojan is the best asset. His defense stinks but 20 ppg on great shooting numbers is valuable. Plus next year he is on an expiring deal and could be traded. That has value.
Grimes is all about his potential, and something tells me the Pistons will waste it.
Pistons have too many kids on the team that they’re trying to figure out. Grimes has just been added to that pile. I liked the kid and hope he does well there.
@padam – I agree that DET’s a mess. Grimes has the year, though, or should. The FO there has to want to show off their new toy for awhile. When Weaver is fired, though, it will be at the worst time for Grimes if he’s lost in the depth chart.
Best asset or best player (now)-? What’s actually traded are the contracts, not the players.
1) Grimes (23 yo), 2.3 mm, 4.2 mm, RFA
vs
2) BB (35 yo) 19 mm, 20 mm (opt), UFA
You like asset #2 better? OK, but remember that when we don’t have our MLE next year. Or when a potential trade partner wants a young controllable rotation player.
The Knicks have two first round picks in the 2024 draft. If they don’t trade them, those are two young controllable players.
I hope Grimes takes advantage. He can put up good numbers there. Has to work on his handle. To go to next level.
Obviously Grimes was not a part of the future for the Knicks. Why be in a spot where they have to extend him? Knicks can draft and develop a 3&D replacement if they keep their 2024 picks.
With Grimes contract gone and Burks contract expiring the Knicks have more cap room to resign Hartenstein – who is going to get nice offers elsewhere.
Knicks also stayed under the luxury tax threshold after both trades so they can pick up a player who is waived.
Hartenstein can be offered a fat contract increase using his “Early Bird” rights. They can do that regardless of the cap, and Burks/Grimes are not relevant to that. That’s the only way the Knicks could offer him market rates.
They bring in 32 pts a game. Playoff experience. Next yr they will be used to get a star player. Depth is a good thing. They got fight now. Healthy
Not sure they’ll hit that 32ppg though now that they’re on the Knicks. They’re not going to see the minutes they saw in Detroit.
When was Grimes ever going to get a chance to show his potential with this team? As long as he stays with the Knicks, right now he’s worth as much as he ever will. If I were him, I would not choose to sign another contract with the Knicks.
Grimes was a great fit with the Knicks, skill-set wise anyway, as he was outperforming his draft position (top 8 in WIN shares for his draft class). How many 25th picks are starting 2 months into Year 2?
It’s really simple. We did a win-now trade. Pure and simple. Stop trying to pretend there’s some deeper reason or it all comes out in the wash. We’ve bet on THIS season. Let’s see what happens.
I understand where you’re coming from. I’ve been saying I want us to keep playing the long game and not make win-now trades. But we clearly needed to do something.
I don’t think it’s as simple as a move for this season, and that’s why I really like it. It does help us more now, but only Burks is expiring. Bojan has a contract just like Fourniers except he’s actually useful and could fit our roster very well. He can be traded in the off-season if the long term fit isn’t there, for a star or someone who fits better.
Grimes was going to be in the same situation as IQ before long. Stuck behind Donte, wanting more. I like Grimes a lot, some fans are def too hard on him. But I think he’ll keep developing, and I know his great D will be missed. But I’d say we maximized his value while improving now and next season, while keeping all the FRPs and staying flexible for the real big fish Rose is waiting for.
I kinda hate trading all these kids we’ve seen grow. It stings, no doubt. What I like more is how we’re not only winning a lot, but making smart moves, focusing on roster fit, and using the assets more wisely than ever.
Anyway, I see future benefit as well. The FO has earned my trust enough to believe that it’s not just suddenly going win-now when so many key dudes are hurt. These injuries point a bit to workload and lost depth and we had to replace some of that. Can’t grade this trade more completely until the playoffs/off-season though. Let’s see…
Good points. I’ve always believed that you put a team together in the off season, and only tinker at the deadline. While hardly a reset, this is abit more than that. The big unknowns heren for fans are 1) Grimes’ mindset (on buy-in, and getting back the minutes he had), and 2) BB’s current skill set (at his age, coming off an injury) and ability to quickly fit in. I’d like to think the FO considered both, and, with the HC, decided this had the right risk-reward. A “Hart” like acquisition, not a “Reddish” like acquisition. They’ve done both. Some trust, but also some trust but verify.
This clown couldn’t even get his FRP back?
While Weaver is in a giving mood, go ahead and do Wiseman for Oladipo. Then a separate trade Sasser for Ziaire or LaRavia and a 2nd (since Oladipo can’t be combined).
Please
Knicks should have asked for Wiseman too ..
No thanks. He’s Hasheem Thabeet 2.0. Dude was drafted over Harden, Rubio and Steph Curry in the lottery.
Where is the clown from the other day who said that Bojan wouldn’t be traded because no one wants him and no one is willing to trade the assets to acquire him? lmaoooo
Bogdanovic gonna play Thib’s defense?
Didn’t work out too well for Fournier, who is also a great shooter.
How will it play out?
Fournier didn’t even try. So when he got in Thibs doghouse. He sulked and folded. Thibs sat him. Bogdanovic will at least try and play. Give effort on D. He will respect you. Fournier didn’t even try or care at times.
It’s not gonna matter much later bc ideally he’s gonna be playing a lot of lineups with Hart, McBride, Precious, Hartenstein/Mitch. Killers on D. He’s an ideal 6th man with a defensive minded bench when NYK gets healthy.
For now we mostly just need him to space the floor and score. And if the fit proves to be good he can stick around when we contend next year and beyond.
I have to think the FO and Thibs know he can. Not just that FO thinks he might, like what might have been the case with Fournier.
Also, its not like Fournier was benched upon arriving here. He remained not only in the rotation, but a starter, until well into his 2nd year. He was removed from the rotation because of his defense, but also because the team was losing, and the season was on the verge of going south. Lots of stuff was tried before that move was made. Instead of owning it, or at least some of it, he pouted and played victim, implying it was personal. It wasn’t.
With Embiid out and likely going to need time to get back in shape.
Bucks lack of defense and panic to change coaches.
Knicks may have that shot to get to the ECF. They may need to hope Miami is matched up with Boston and Bucks.
This is what depth looks Like …..

“The Knicks have looked like potential contenders in the Eastern Conference since acquiring OG Anunoby. Now, with another two veteran players coming into the fold, there’s a chance the team could be pushing for a conference finals appearance this season.
Tom Thibodeau has slowly been building his project with the Knicks. He’s developed their young talent. He coached their stars. Now, the fruits of that hard work are starting to show. Burks will fill the ball-handling void left by Immanuel Quickley. Bogdanovic will fill a much-needed scoring void on the roster, which should ease the pressure on Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle. “
In Thibs we Trust ………. becoming a good team. Depth can take you a long way. The playoffs will be fun this year. For that I’m grateful.
The Knicks are big winners. Needed more scoring and Bogdanovic and Burks fit perfectly next to the engines (Jalen) Brunson and (Julius) Randle. Both can get hot,” The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor wrote on X. “Both can create if needed at some time or another to give Brunson a breather. Crazy how deep New York is now.”
The Knicks are lowkey pretty sharp these days. Tons of really nice pickups of late. Hart, DDV (Donte DiVincenzo), (Isaiah) Hartenstein + getting Bojan. They’ve quietly done a really nice job rebuilding,” former Mavericks exec Haralabos Voulgaris wrote on X.
“The only thing the Knicks were missing was depth and right now they are deeper than the Pacific Ocean,” ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins said on the network’s trade deadline show.
hate losing Grimes but Detroit should still call 9-1-1
