The Pistons are “known to covet” a big man who can space the floor, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, who reports in his latest Substack article (subscription required) that the team is said to have interest in both Naz Reid and Myles Turner.
Reid followed up his Sixth Man of the Year campaign in 2023/24 with another strong season for the Timberwolves in ’24/25, averaging 14.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.3 assists in 27.5 minutes per game across 80 outings (17 starts). He has made 39.5% of 5.4 three-point attempts per game over the past two seasons.
Turner, who was drafted 11th overall by the Pacers in 2015 and has been the team’s starting center for the last decade, averaged 15.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks in 30.2 minutes per contest across 72 games this season. The 29-year-old knocked down a career-high 39.6% of 5.5 three-pointers per night and has played a key role in getting the Pacers within one game of an NBA Finals appearance.
It remains to be seen whether the Pistons have a viable chance to land either player, Stein acknowledges.
Reid holds a $15MM player option for next season and the Timberwolves have made it known they’d have strong interest in working out a new deal with him if he declines that option, Stein writes.
As for Turner, multiple reports have indicated that Indiana is well positioned to re-sign the longtime Pacer in unrestricted free agency this summer, and Stein confirms that the team has conveyed a willingness to go into the tax next season to keep its roster together.
As we detailed earlier this week, the Pistons could potentially create nearly $17MM in cap room without making any cost-cutting moves, but it would mean renouncing their rights to key free agents like Malik Beasley, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Dennis Schröder. If the club operates over the cap, it could offer the full mid-level exception, worth a projected $14.1MM, to a free agent, but wouldn’t be able to exceed that figure without a sign-and-trade.
Jalen Duren, Isaiah Stewart, and Paul Reed handled big-man duties for Detroit in 2024/25. While that trio was effective, none of the three is a threat from beyond the arc — they made a combined 25 three-pointers on the season, with Duren not attempting a single one.
I truly truly hope Naz leaves Minnesota bc that would be a huge domino falling in the direction of Ant forcing his way back home to Atl. For that reason & others I would expect them to be very aggressive as far as keeping him. If I’m them I prioritize Naz, then basically keep whoever’s cheapest bw NAW & Randle. And I’m not agreeing to any s&t with Detroit unless they’re giving up Ausar. Brooklyn should also be aggressive going after Naz tho. Nets & Wolves should make Naz a very wealthy(ier) man in a few weeks. Hopefully BK gets him.
As for Bklyn, I’m going to pass on Naz. I would prefer to target Aldama.
Man y’all are something else lol. Naz Reid is clearly a lot better than Aldama
That’s not clear at all.
Nets have no need for him . They are in full rebuild. Get off than NON – sense. Smoke the real stuff. Naz is great for Minny and cheaper than Randle. He can help a playoff team. No one can sign him unless a sign n trade. Nets want nothing to do with him —— they got FIVE great picks this draft.
I don’t see Brooklyn using their cap space for a guy like Reid. They are saving it for a huge move or using cap space to get more picks. I like Detroit going after him(and moving Stewart) with keeping 2 or the 3 free agents they have. Reid would be a good pickup for many teams including the big one in LA.
Myles Turner is a Pacer for life, they can get Naz for sure though
Trade Isiah Stewart and get Naz Reid in FA that’s great business.
Stew has upside, his contract ain’t bad, I’m sure he wouldn’t be a hard sell.
Naz would be a huge addition off the bench behind Duren. Great go to option and make them a real threat.
Be nice to see them swing big in some kinda deal.
Got some pieces, Stew, Tobias, Holland, Sasser, draft picks. Don’t need to go all out for a KD but getting a solid second option for Cade would be a great step in the right direction. Even a LaVine/Monk, PJ Washington, Anfernee Simons, Cameron Johnson, Trey Murphy or something like that
KP and Hauser for Tobias, Stewart and pick 37
Then let THJ (16m) walk and try get Naz Reid for a similar amount.
Then personally I’d prioritise Schroder over Beasley returning just acsue I think he offers more to the second unit and allows Cade a break if needed.
Think you need to be real smart with the money you have to manage it in a way that you get best bang for you buck. You need a couple players to fill out the roster and don’t have many picks in the draft for cheap depth.
After your big Naz Reid deal and Schroder. I’d be looking at cheap guys like Bojan Bogdanovic, Charles Bassey and Alec Burks.
Thus leaving you with:
Cade Ivey Thompson KP Duren
Schroder Burks Holland Hauser Reid
Sasser Bogdanovic Fontecchio Bassey
Turner is a nice piece for Pistons. Just don’t think Pacers can survive and let him walk…..
Pistons have to think long and hard about their next move. They don’t want to be the Next Hawks debacle ……. Pistons are in a good place. Cade is the next one. Do this right Detroit.
Pistons can have Capella.
To get either you still need to let some go and maybe a trade. Let Beasley and Hardaway walk. Beasley is tough but Ivy will pick up his points. I would look to trade Duren. He will be expensive and is not an outside shooting threat. Both Indy & Min., don’t have the Cap $. Turner or Reid would cost 30 to 35 mil to pry away. Either is worth it. If either team matches they will be past 2nd apron.
