The Clippers view John Collins as their likely starter at power forward, according to Law Murray and John Hollinger of The Athletic. Collins, who is being acquired from Utah in a three-team trade, brings an athletic presence to L.A.’s frontcourt and adds more size to a team that had trouble matching up with Denver in its first-round playoff series.
Collins can be effective next to starting center Ivica Zubac, the authors note, and provides a good complement to backup Brook Lopez, a free agent addition who can space the floor for Collins to operate in the low post. Having more reliable big men also means less time at power forward for Kawhi Leonard and less responsibility for James Harden to guard opposing fours.
Norman Powell, who’s being sent to Miami in the deal, put together an outstanding offensive season, but he was less effective after the All-Star break, Murray and Hollinger observe. Some of the decline was because he was slowed by knee and hamstring issues, while Leonard’s return from injury also contributed. The authors state that Powell’s age, availability and fit all made the Clippers hesitant to give him an extension heading into the upcoming season.
There’s more from the Pacific Division:
- The Clippers might pursue Bradley Beal if he reaches a buyout agreement with the Suns, but they’ll be limited because they only have $5.3MM of their non-taxpayer mid-level exception left to offer, notes Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link). Scotto lists Malcolm Brogdon and Chris Paul as other free agent guards the Clippers have expressed interest in.
- The Warriors are also viewed as a potential landing spot for Beal, league sources tell Grant Afseth of RG. Golden State is still considered a strong candidate to add Boston center Al Horford, while landing Beal would provide another proven scoring threat to ease the Burden on Stephen Curry. The Warriors are also trying to determine how to handle restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga, and Afseth echoes a recent report that sign-and-trade talks with the Kings and other teams haven’t resulted in much progress.
- Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic looks at how the Suns are planning to rebuild around Devin Booker, who’s expected to receive a two-year, $150MM extension this summer.
Anyone with eyes: damn, the Warriors sure are small, they better add length and height and size this offseason!
Kerr: Bring me Bradley Beal!!!!
He’s not the GM
Very few moves get made without Kerr agreeing.
Also Kerr can ask for players. He says he did that with Schroeder. He loved Schroeder from playing him a bunch with Team USA against Germany. Dunleavey said he wasn’t so familiar with Schroeder but trusted Kerr. Nobody is perfect
Im sure he was also very on board with getting rid of Schroeder with how it went…
How the hell does a GM not know who any player is let alone someone like Shroeder. Be nice to get job off of Dads name. What do you think about Jaylen Brown Mike??? “Never heard of him” what do you do? “ I play clash of clans” but I did go to Duke. And way below average career. Haven’t even heard of myself”
Nice hire Warriors
@crushed You’re just making s**t up. No NBA team makes a big NBA trade without diligence. Dunleavey had seen Schroeder play for years. That’s not enough to pull the trigger.
Dunleavy never said “Never heard of him” about Schroeder. Dunleavy said that Kerr knew Schroeder extremely well from playing Schroeder in so many non-NBA games. It’s about the personality and leadership stuff.
Kerr basically told Dunleavy “trust me. I know you don’t have time to evaluate this guy but he is the backup PG that I want.”
You don’t know who said what to who. Melton went down and we needed a replacement.
Well I believe kerr. Its his words. I will tqke him over uou. And he isn’t lying. Mike do what I tell what I tell you. Yes I know you don’t know who anyone is. Mike thinking he is getting something out of kuminga is the best of it. They can’t remotely afford him. He ia way overvalued. He will get signed and warriors can’t match and will loose him for nothing. He failed that at deadline.
@crushed It’s not Kerr’s words. But you know that. Pathetic.
Kerr literally publicly stated he asked Mike to get him. Mike was no familiar with him. Nice GM
Melton went down and Dennis was the only gettable piece. He also stunk because he was used in a different role to Melton.
@RenoChris I do know because Kerr talked about Schroeder to the press when the trade happened.
Kerr said he had wanted Schroeder for a long time and how Schroeder had “kicked my ass on 3 continents”. Kerr said he told Dunleavey not to wait when Schroeder became available.
Thanks for proving my point. Just have kerr be GM. Cause GM doesn’t know who anyone is.
They got Schroeder because Melton went down and got rid of him just as fast
He is. Mike does what he is told. Didn’t even know who shroeder was. I doubt he has a clue about who any player is. Solitude screen all day
therewas a report that Kuminga was negotiating with one of those team that liked him but still insisting on the $30 million a year deal so the team moved on. Kuminga is going to end up with a 1 year deal with warriors unless he comes down from his asking price. His agent is an amateur when it comes to getting a deal done.
Only the fool takes QO
With QO, he has no enough playing time
If he takes the qualifying offer he will be an unrestricted free agent next season. Depending on how things play out, that may be his best option.
If overpaying Kuminga at 4 years $90 million, starting at 20, Warriors reach the tax line
They cant go above 14.1. And really can’t afford that either. A team will eventually sign him for 15-17 million. Walks for nothing. Dunleavy in over his head. But he sure has a nice last name. Also he might. Just might want a center. There isn’t one on the team and no green doesn’t count
Monte Poole, who has been covering the Warriors since, probably, before the Kuminga, was born, said JKs looked like he was trying to justify getting that $35million contract. In other words, he was pressing. He had some great games, but his shooting numbers were down across the board.
He should have taken $30 that they offered. Better yet, fire his Agent.
The Warriors should sign Kuminga for 2yr/$25 million. They should also sign Horford and Beal. Horford to replace Looney, and Beal because they need the shooting. At the deadline, move JK and Heild, who basically has an expiring contract, for a big man and maybe a pick.
@arc89 that report doesn’t make any sense because Kuminga can’t negotiate his own salary. The only kind of deal to make is a sign and trade.Where was that report?
Kuminga is a restricted free agent, which means he can negotiate an offer with other teams, but the Warriors have the right to match any offer he receives.
It also shuts down any other negotiations if he takes an offer. It is a take it or leave it deal for GSW on the exact terms.
@Chucktoad1 We all know that the Warriors can match.
The point is that no NBA teams are eligible to offer $30M deal like arc89 says was in the report because of their cap situation. There is basically no cap space available for free agents right now.
That is why I said the only deal that Kuminga can try to negotiate right now involves a sign and trade with the Warrriors.
Kuminga can negotiate his own salary. What do you think free agency is?
We’re not talking about what free agency is.
We’re talking about what options Kuminga has right now. He can’t negotiate a deal for $30M because no team can pay him $30M. Maybe there’s a team out there that can offer him half that, but he’s not interested.
The only way Kuminga can get a decent contract right now is by a 3-way sign and trade deal. Get it?
The only negotiations that Kuminga is
What do you Kuminga’s agent is doing right now? He trying to find a deal that gets the most money and biggest return for the Warriors. That is called negotiations. This is free agency.
Damn idiot. Warriors cannot afford him. At all. Research. Unless they cut draumond. They have literally tried to trade him for 3 years. His whole career. Now no team is going to give anything for him. The most overrated, overvalued player in league. A team will get him for 15 million and warriors can’t even match that. No assets are coming back. No leverage
Warriors can match any offer. His trade value in a S?T is $12.5 million that makes it that much harder to trade.
Incorrect
Homework: study salary cap and warriors historic tax penalties.
they can match it.
Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob has indicated the team is highly likely to match any offer sheet signed by Jonathan Kuminga this offseason, stating it would “take a lot” for them not to. As a restricted free agent, Kuminga can negotiate with other teams, but the Warriors retain the right to retain him by matching any offer. Lacob’s comments suggest a strong desire to keep Kuminga, who was the 7th overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft.
You don’t get it. Great words. Its not a matter of want. Its a matter of money. Warriors can not go over 14.1 million. Period. Not owners call. And that same owner literally has been trying to trade him for 3 years. His whole career. There is no value there. Nor will there be. Thats why he is still there. Also if you use that 14.1 million you cannot sign a center and there is not one on the team right now
The max they can use to sign a free agent is $5.4 million. The rest of the players are minimum contracts. Right now they are at 170.5. the first apron which they are trying to not go over is at $195. So they have $25 million left for 6 players and 3 2 way players. That includes Kuminga. So if Kuminga takes his $9 million QO that will leave them with an bout $15.6 million left for 5 players and 3 2way players. If Kuminga was offered anything over $15 million they probably let him walk if they don’t work out a trade.
@ easymoney Kuminga team is demanding that much. That si why teh Nets drop out of the offers.
@arc89 The Nets were the only team that could offer Kuminga as much as $20MM but the Nets have never been interested in Kuminga.
There are no teams except the Warriors that Kuminga could ask $30MM from.
Sounded like Nets said No to how much Kuminga wanted. The kings are not there since they want to trade their scraps that Warriors do not need. Most likely i see a 1 year deal and Kuminga gets traded close to trade deadline.
I think you are the only one that understands this. Most overvalued player in league. How does he not see the warriors have literally tried to trade him for three years. His whole career. Read the room. Warriors jacked this up just as bad cause now they aren’t going to get anything for him
I can’t think of a worse landing spot for Beal than GSW. Get Herb Jones!
People are mostly ignorant about Kuminga FA. There’s plenty of interest STILL for Kuminga. It’s just that teams need Warriors(Sign and Trade) to facilitate kuminga’s asking price. Warriors has to decide if they want Kuminga or not. Right now, they have not decided and playing hard to get some value back. In other words, it’s a disaster just like Wiseman, Moody, Poole, Rollins, Baldwin, Evans, etc. :(
Why cant they draft and develop young talent?
They had a deal with the devil in the past, which is why they were lucky with Steph, Dray and Klay. They are now at the part wherein they will never be able to develop any young talent.
Because the head coach doesn’t want to develop young talent if that means losing games in this season
It’s that simple.
They want a rotation player back for a rotation player. And with Base Year Compensation they only get matching at half his contract value. There are only a few guys making 12M that end up in the GSW rotation so they pull the trigger.
If GSW keep him until Dec his full contract matches and you can 1 for 1 him for a 25M player. His salary matching is just hamstrung right now in order to get real value.
poole would still be here is it wasn’t for the change in the CBA. Moody was looking good at the end of teh season but was hurt during the playoffs is why his numbers droped. He had surgery so he should be good to go. Wiseman can’t keep healthy. Evans had 0 offense while Baldwin has struggled. Rollins is the only one that is getting some playing time as a back up. I would be questioning Warriors more if a few went to other teams and became starters on other teams.
Poole’s attitude is what got him traded. He thought he was Curry or Klay after one good season.
mainly his contract is why he was gone. Also his poor defense drove Kerr crazy.
After watching Poole play in DC, Kevin Garnett, a previous fan of Jordan, said that Poole doesn’t deserve to be in the NBA…I think it was his attitude.
poole does have a bad attitude of talking smack. Players around teh league has said that he is one of the worst in the NBA.
> Poole’s attitude is what got him traded.
And such an unfortunate coincidence that Poole was caught with a Superman punch from Draymond Green.
Jordan had the misfortune of signing a contract that would otherwise have used up the cap space that would prevent Draymond from staying with the team. But that, too, was just a coincidence.
“Superman” punch? I think you being a bit hyperbolic. CP3 paycheck was more definitely larger than Poole’s. So, I don’t know how it would have stopped them from resigning Draymond.
Poole definitely had a problem with his role with Golden State.
You’ve forgotten the facts. Draymond’s contract was scheduled to expire after year 1 of Poole’s 4 year deal, (which was replaced by 1 year of CP3’s.
Everyone knew that with Poole’s (and Wiggins’ concurrent) signing there would not be enough cap space for Steph, Poole, Wiggins, Klay, and Draymond in 2024-25 and beyond.
Draymond resented Poole because the Warriors chose to pay him (and Wiggins) at the expense of Draymond’s future. That was a big part of the antagonism that led to the fight, and the Poole camp railed against Draymond about it for all of 2023-24.
The failure by Kerr to discipline Draymond in any way was a huge failure in leadership. Compounded by Draymond’s refusal to genuinely apologize to Poole, the situation was untenable for Poole and his family.
Huh??? Where you been for 3 years. They have literally tried to trade him his whole career. Fact. No one wants him unless its on the cheap. Kuminga and warriors have no leverage. Also they can’t even afford the minimum for the guy. Unless they cut draymond. A team will sign him for 15 million eventually and the warriors cap situation won’t even allow them to match that
@Michol well they have no problem drafting young talent, its just that Steve “half days every day” Kerr flat out refuses to do that aspect of his job, and instead just rides Curry greatness to victory. What if there is no Curry? Then GSW will literally go 0-82 because Kerr ALSO refuses to create offensive plans without Curry!
Kerr literally played 2way scrubs over Kuminga and Moody for no reason at all. All those 2way guys were not long term pieces. Weird how Steve had time for that, but not for Kuminga.
Kuminga should be developed as a 4, alongside a legit C and Draymond at the 3 and Jimmy at the 2. Even a lineup of Horford-Kuminga-Green-Butler-Curry runs the table next year.
One thing is for sure: if Andre Iguodala was HC, Kuminga would be developed into an all-star/elite talent by now. The ONLY reason why he isn’t is due to Kerr refusing to do his job.
Warriors have 3 exceptions to use
Trade exception $9 million
BAE
MLE , two types to choose
$14.1 million MLE if Kuminga gets reasonable pay
Exactly. Can’t get it done. Will get no one back.
Collins is super under appreciated.
Athletic big who can create his own shot, play adequate defense, rebound and hit 40% of his 3s last year (spread the floor).
Honestly, assuming LAC are all healthy next year, I think they’ll be a top 3 seed and surprise a lot of people, in large part b/c this trade makes them a match-up headache for just about everyone in the league.
I think people are under-valuing what they did.
You lost us on “play adequate defense”
His 3pt shooting was aweful for several years in a row before last year. Nobody trusts his shot yet, and teams wont respect him as a shooter until he produces longer.
When you only shoot 148 its SST. He just isnt a good volume 3pt shooter to this point in his career.
@CyrusZuo I’m thinking you’re an Utah fan?
Collins is in that group of players that was given a big rookie extension and never lived up to it and got traded to a terrible team like Washington or Charlotte or Utah. Nobody wants them. They can’t play defense. They play for their stats.
You cannot tell anything about guys like John Collins or Jordan Poole or Miles Bridges or Bones Hyland because they play trash minutes in meaningless games for trash teams.
Both Collins and Poole contributed meaningful minutes early in their careers.
John Collins played a key role on the Atlanta team that made a surprising run to the Eastern Conference Finals. His performance declined after a foot injury and a suspension for HGH use.
While I’m not a big fan of Jordan Poole, he was an important contributor during the Warriors’ most recent championship season.
All those players got paid big rookie extensions that their teams regretted later. High potential young players can stall out and never improve. Every NBA season there are a bunch of these guys.
Atlanta and Warriors both realized within 1 year of giving the big contract that they bet wrong. Since no other teams wanted those players they became negative contracts.
Atlanta had to give Collins away to Utah because no team would give Atlanta anything decent in a trade. The Jazz couldn’t trade Collins for draft picks in the past two years. Finally now they dumped him for nothing.
The Warriors had to give Washington a first rounder to take Poole. Then he became Washington’s problem.
@DaveyJ I’m with you 100% on the critical need to get bigger and younger, but I disagree with you on Beal.
Beal fits with Steph and our motion offense beautifully. He’s one of the best movement shooters in the league, a great decision-maker, high IQ, and he’s unselfish.
He didn’t fit in Phoenix with Booker, but Steph, Draymond, and Jimmy will find him great shoots. I’d expect 22 ppg if he starts, and he will create space for Steph.
Not sure if Beal fits with the warriors. Will he be OK as a bench player? I am hoping Mobley makes it as a 2 way player he looks like a guy who can set screens.
Im guessing Mobely and Will Richards are the front runners for 2 ways. I would love Cryer with the way he balled out so far this summer for the 3rd. I expect Toohey to get the 4 year second rounder contract since it is sooooo cheap. The team does still have at least 4 roster spots to fill even if theyre going into the season with 14. If they are a 1st apron team using the TPMLE they would have plenty of room for a partial guarantee 15th man as well.
jackson Rowe is going to need to step it up to keep his 2 way going. Not sure what happened to Spencer or Key from last year. I have not read anything on either one and wondering if they sign a 1 year deal at the minimum.
I think Beal has become the equivalent of a tweener starter. He seems to have trouble staying healthy playing a starter workload, and his defense with a starting unit is bad.
He is over qualified scoring wise for a bench 6th man role even though its much easier to hide him on defense in a second unit and the lighter workload could keep him healthier.
On a 7M deal you can just let him walk if it isnt working though so might as well role the dice and see how it works with the 2018 allstars all in their 30s!
Chap, I was looking for the thumbs up or down… where do you stand on Beal to GSW?
Sure sounds good. Could definitely use more shooters teams have to respect. Outside Steph Post is probably the only reliable shooter since Heild is so streaky.
Dunn Harden Kawhi Collins Zubac
…. Bogdanovic DJJ …. BLopez
Not sure if Batum is still there?
This is a really solid looking side now tho.
It’s got defence, shooting, athleticism, experience, rim protection so on and so on.
I’d bring back CP3 for his retirement season as my back up point guard. He a nice returning home story for him and think he’d also be a great fit as a floor general that can just facilitate for others and run the offence.
It’s solid but it’s not a top 5 team without Kahwi
That is going to be the question every day until Kahwi retires. Can he play or not.
That’s why Vegas odds will always be bad for Clippers.
50-50 Kahwi will play in the post-season.
I think even if they sit him half the season they’d make the playoffs then hopefully he’s fit and ready for the playoffs
Think in the west they are right up there with the best teams. Probably behind OKC, Denver and Dallas, but on par with GSW, Minny and San Antonio
Watch the Clippers play Zubac and Lopez at the same time and beat the brakes off everyone.
The Warriors are not on par with Minnesota, Dallas would be below Denver and OKC, and the Rockets should be one of the top teams too.
Signing Beal sounds like something the Warriors would do.. surely this will happen….
Nobody knows how good dallas will be without Kyrie. OKC, Rockets, and Denver are the 3 top teams in the west. You never know how injuries will play out.
@aristotle we cannot have both Steph and Beal out there at the same time. I agree if you don’t view Beal as a starter, and only giving him big minutes in non-Curry court times, he works well with Dray and Jimmy, for sure. Beal’s defense is a massive negative, and he provides no size whatsoever.
I would honestly rather GSW get Ben Simmons to play alongside Steph, but he probably wants big money.
