3:39pm: Shamet’s one-year deal with the Knicks is non-guaranteed and he will compete with Garrison Mathews for a roster spot, according to Stefan Bondy of The New York Post (Twitter link).
2:53pm: Free agent shooting guard Landry Shamet is returning to the Knicks on a one-year contract, agent George S. Langberg tells Shams Charania of ESPN (Twitter link).
According to Ian Begley of SNY.tv (Twitter link), Shamet drew interest from other teams but he liked being part of New York’s locker room last season and wants to compete for a championship.
Shamet, who is entering his eighth NBA season, will earn $3,080,921 in 2025/26, while the Knicks will carry a cap charge of $2,296,274. We’ll have to wait and see if the contract is guaranteed — Shamet originally signed a non-guaranteed Exhibit 9 deal with New York last fall.
Shamet, 28, was the 26th overall pick of the 2018 draft after three college seasons at Wichita State. He spent time with the Sixers, Clippers, Nets, Suns and Wizards prior to signing with the Knicks in 2024.
Known for his shooting ability, Shamet appeared in 50 games last season after his season debut was delayed by a shoulder injury. He averaged career lows of 5.7 points and 1.2 rebounds in 15.2 minutes per game, though he did convert 39.7% of his three-point looks.
Once the signing is official, Shamet will be the 13th player under contract with the Knicks. All three of their two-way spots remain open, with Kevin McCullar Jr. still a two-way restricted free agent.
The Knicks are hard-capped at the second tax apron and don’t have enough room below that threshold to carry a full 15-man roster into the regular season. Given their proximity to their hard cap, the expectation is that their 13th man will be a veteran on a minimum-salary contract (like Shamet) and their 14th man will be a player whose draft rights they hold on a rookie minimum deal.
This was seemingly very predictable. The Knicks clearly have much better depth going into the season this year than they did last year.
Deal a Mitch package to the Nets for Danny Wolf
Where’s the Genius 2K BlindSider ….
vision like opossums lols ….. come tell me about the Knicks …..,..,
Landry Shamet signs a 3.2 mill minimum deal. As an 8 yr vet. Which leaves them enough money to sign a rookie ……. Gee I wonder who that will be (Diswara) ?????????? I must have a crystal ball.
Hard to believe the Knicks were really putting off Shamet while trying to instead sign a guy everybody in the world knows just doesn’t wanna play basketball.
If you gotta spend 4 weeks trying to talk him into it, what should that have told you in the first week?
Good point, that can’t have felt good. Shamet played with the bum.
Fake news ….. Knicks considered all options. Like they should. No vet at max minimum can be signed. It would put them in second apron. And Ben was never offered a deal.
Incorrect. As stated in the article, the Knicks’ payroll will only need to cover $2.296M as the league will account for the difference so that veterans aren’t disadvantaged. They can sign one vet and one rookie with draft rights. The rookie is almost definitely Diawara as another option in Europe is injured, under contract there, and would probably want more than the minimum to come to the NBA anyway.
I like Shamet. With the right roster construction he’d be a fine 9th-10th man. But if he gets minutes on this team, I fear they’ll ultimately come at the expense of minutes for the bigs, with more KAT at the 5 and OG/Hart at the 4, which would suck. Twin towers are the way. Let’s hope he’s just a depth piece.
If there is going to be competition for the last veteran spot (as indicated), then Shamet must not have a guaranteed contract. I guess that’s how they have to do it, if only due to allow for an injury possibility; but it’s not optimal.
Landry was a solid 2way guy last year. He shot well and plays smart. He understands his role off the bench. And loves the fact NY fans know it and applaud it. He had to be the guy for me. Just on bench redo. This Knicks should be better than last yrs team. Now you have to prove it. Sill a trade coming imo. Much later though ……. NYK
I was rewatching some playoff basketball over the summer. He looked really sharp in the Indiana series and was so committed to giving it all in every episode.
Good for NYK to re-sign him. Maybe with a new coach, he’ll get more minutes. Only 28 y.o. still.
Very very predictable move much like Precious this time last year. I wish it was Brogdon or Westbrook, but obviously, they want a lot more money. Knicks also has former first round pick Langford, which means he’ll never be given an opportunity like TJ Warren last year.
